The technique described in Part I, has been extended to the examination of cells removed by scraping from 22 lesions of oral lichen planus and leukoplakia. It was concluded that the surface morphology of the cells from these lesions was intermediate between that of normal tissue and of malignant tissue. The observations have been quantified and subjected to computer analysis together with the data derived from the observations of normal and malignant tissue. This confirms the visual observation that a relationship exists between the modified surface characteristics of the cells from these lesions and their subjectively assessed histological appearances. A correlation has been found between the SEM appearance and an epithelial atypia index (EAI) derived according to the criteria of Smith and Pindborg (1969). In the case of lichen planus inflammatory changes appear to be associated with increased modification of surface characteristics. These changes are also reflected in an increased EAI. It is suggested that the present technique may be of value in the diagnosis and assessment of potentially malignant lesions.

Oral leiomyosarcomata have been reported on only 15 occasions in the world literature. An additional case of leiomyosarcoma of the cheek in an 88-year-old male is reported. The relevant features of leiomyosarcomata are reviewed and discussed.
Severe alveolar atrophy is a common sequel to the extraction of teeth from the mandible. This atrophy, coupled with the associated superficiality of adjacent muscle attachments (Fig. 1a) precludes the provision of a stable, retentive prosthesis. This paper discusses some of the operations which have been designed to alleviate this considerable clinical problem and considers three aspects of the sulcoplasty procedure which in the author's opinion are crucial to its success. The paper also introduces the use of lyophilised porcine skin to dress the surface deficit created during surgery, thus obviating the need for skin grafting.

A modification of the musculomucosal nasolabial island flap based on the facial artery for reconstruction of anterior floor of mouth defects is presented. Surgical technique and advantages in comparison to conventional nasolabial flaps are described. A series of 14 flaps in 8 patients is presented.
Histochemical alterations of lectin binding and keratin distribution in experimental carcinomas of the hamster cheek pouch were obtained following cryotreatment. Cryotreated carcinoma cells showed a characteristic reduction in lectin binding and keratin staining shortly following cryosurgery. Tumor tissue, on the 2nd and 3rd days after cryotreatment, displayed destruction and necrosis with almost a complete loss of lectin binding and keratin staining. The remaining neoplastic cells located in the deeper layer showed positive reaction for both lectin binding and keratin, which is indicative of tumor recurrence. Histochemical staining of lectin binding and keratin proteins were useful markers in cryotreated tumor cells to identify either destruction and necrosis or vital activity of neoplastic growth.
