[Proposal for evaluating the psychological effects of exposure to non-ionizing radiation in the work environment].

Because of the growing national and international spreading of devices producing non-ionizing radiations, the AA consider the possibility of a deep study on some of the most precious and interesting effects, though controversial at the same time, described in occupationally exposed subjects: the psychological ones. Such a study, however, presents considerable difficulties because of the great deal of personal, domestic and social factors responsible for the arising of such a symptomatology. Therefore the AA suggest the use of a set of tests particularly aiming at leaving out such factors in the genesis of the psychological troubles; this set must be previously administered to a carefully selected sample in order to verify its accuracy, reliability, sensitivity and specificity, so that it will be possible to extend afterwards the research to larger samples of population.

Electromagnetic stimulation of ligament healing in rabbits.

To evaluate the effect of a specific noninvasive method of electrical stimulation on ligament healing in rabbits, a solid core electromagnet energized by a square wave unidirectional current was applied to injured and repaired medial collateral ligaments seven hours per day, five days per week for intervals of up to six weeks. Healing was evaluated by gross, histologic, biochemical, and biomechanical parameters. Stimulation was shown to increase histologic maturity relatively, restore stiffness and failure strength earlier, and return collagen content toward normal unoperated values sooner in these healing ligaments. It is uncertain whether the end point of healing is affected by this technique, but at six weeks both histologic and biochemical evidence of acceleration remains. Further investigation into the effect of electromagnetic stimulation by this and other fields on non-osseous tissues and their components is indicated.

[Evaluation of lens transparency in persons exposed to electromagnetic radiation of 27--30 MHz frequency].

55 women occupationally exposed to lasting electromagnetic radiation at 27--30 MHz frequency and 101 persons from control group were examined with reference to the status of lens transparency. No statistically significant differences between the frequency of lens opacity in the exposed and control group were found. No dependence of opacity on duration of employment was found, either. An increase in lens opacity was proportional to age both in the exposed and control group.
