Contradictory results are found in the literature concerning the role of vision in the perception of space or in spatial navigation, in part because of the lack of murine models of total blindness used so far. The authors evaluated the spatial abilities of anophthalmic transgenic mice. These mice did not differ qualitatively from their wild-type littermates in general locomotor activity, spontaneous alternation, object exploration, or anxiety, but their level of exploratory activity was generally lower. In the spatial version of the water maze, they displayed persistent thigmotaxic behavior and showed severe spatial learning impairments. However, their performances improved with training, suggesting that they may have acquired a rough representation of the platform position. These results suggest that modalities other than vision enable some degree of spatial processing in proximal and structured spaces but that vision is critical for accurate spatial navigation.

Many ophthalmic plastic surgical problems are ignored because the patient seems to be ""getting along." Frequently physicians are only vaguely aware of the constant daily discomfort their patients experience from seemingly minor problems such as endocrine exophthalmos, an ill-fitting prosthesis or baggy eyelids. As a result, too often the patient is unaware of the treatment possibilities that are available to relieve and often eliminate his problem. These conditions are often first seen by the family physician.

The purpose of this work was to determine the main trends in surgical rehabilitation of patients with anophthalmia and define the principles of treating patients with poor ocular prostheses. A total of 3345 interventions on the orbital cavity and eye appendages were carried out at plastic surgery and ocular prosthesis department in 1991-2000. Of these, 1535 patients (45.8%) were with anophthalmia. Analysis of disease structure in anophthalmia helped determine the priority trends of surgical rehabilitation of this group of patients: enucleation with plasty of the supporting motor stump, 36.6%; postradiation atrophy of orbital tissues after enucleation for retinoblastoma, 22.6%; anophthalmic syndrome, 11.7%; cicatricial deformation of the cavity, 11.5%; anophthalmia with concomitant eyelid deformation, 6.1%; anophthalmia with orbital deformation, 3.1%; denudation of orbital implants, 2.6%; congenital anophthalmia, 2.5%; prolapse of the inferior vault and upper eyelid ptosis, 1.8 and 1.4%, respectively. Individual methods of treatment and main rehabilitation principles were developed for each group of patients.
PURPOSE: The aim of this paper is to describe a simple method for severely contracted anophthalmic socket repair in which a silicone sphere is used as an expander for widening and deepening severely contracted conjunctival sacs. PATIENTS AND METHOD: This method was used in five patients. Each patient had undergone previous operations but they could not wear artificial eyes and there was no hope of performing any other type of surgical procedure successfully. In our surgical method, the severely contracted conjunctiva is cut deeply at the desired level of the upper and lower eyelid fornix. A certain amount of scar tissue is excised and a silicone sphere is placed under the eyelids. The eyelid margins are sutured to each other with a double-running nylon suture. After four months, the eyelid fissure is opened and a special round-shaped artificial eye is inserted. The original silicone sphere is used as an expander in the evenings during the next two or three months. RESULTS: This procedure was used successfully in four of the five cases. In one case the silicone sphere was lost and cicatrization reoccurred. The longest follow-up time is now five years, the shortest, one year. CONCLUSION: Using a silicone sphere as an expander can be an alternative surgical method for contracted anophthalmic socket repair. The main advantage of this method is its simplicity. In order to use this procedure, good cooperation between doctor and patient is essential.
Extirpation of cranial neural crest cells in presomite to 5 somite chick embryos produces monsters which in all essential respects are identical to human cyclopias. The primary lesion involves damage to the forebrain and consequently the inhibition of the nasal placode and nasal organ development as well as the destruction of the anterior neural crest cells, with the resultant absence of the nasal and interobital septa and of the facial dermal skeleton.
Research was carried out into the visual projections of embryos and chickens of Gallus domesticus L. who had undergone early optic vesicle removal and into microphthalmy or monophthalmy with ipsilateral optic fibres resulting from such removal. The architectonics of primary visual centres (nuclei ectomamillaris, geniculatus lateralis, lateralis anterior superficialis synencephali, griseus tectalis and the tectum opticum superficiale) and of the isthmo-opticus nucleus were compared with the architectonics of the same centres in anophthalms. From this research it can be seen that:--1. Optic fibres coming from limited ocular formation in microphthalms can reach the ectomamillaris nucleus in most cases and sustain existence; they may reach the tectum opticum without playing a qualitatively discernable morphogenetic role and act upon the isthmo-opticus nucleus. For these microphthalms, the nuclei lateralis anterior, geniculatus lateralis, superficialis synencephali and griseus tectalis are comparable to those of anophthalms. 2. Ipsilateral optic fibers can develop and show the same specificity and morphogenetic function as the microphthalms' optic fibres. 3. After hatching, some anophthalms shows an isthmo-opticus nucleus with scores of neurons. In general, observations during this research have shown that the specificity of microphthalms' optic fibres and ipsilateral optic fibres remain strictly the same whatever the operation under consideration.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a newborn male whose only anomaly was an anophthalmia in his left eye. Complementary explorations were carried out to discard associated systemic pathologies. DISCUSSION: Anophthalmia/microphthalmia is the most frequent congenital eye malformation in the newborn. Its prevalence in Spain for the past twenty years was 21.34/100,000 newborn. The most usual presentation is as part of syndromes, appearing only exceptionally in an isolated way. It is important for the ophthalmologist to be aware of this pathology since the early treatment, because the corresponding orbital prosthesis may help to avoid, at least in part, dysmorphogenesis and derived aesthetic problems.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of combined mucous membrane and hard palate mucosal grafts in the reconstruction of contracted eye socket. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen eyes of 13 patients with contracted sockets underwent socket reconstructive surgery with combined mucosal membrane and hard palate mucosal grafts. RESULTS: The average follow-up period was 33 months. Five of 13 patients required additional surgery after initial socket reconstruction. However, all patients who underwent socket reconstruction with hard palate mucosal grafts were able to wear a cosmetically acceptable ocular prosthesis postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Combined mucosal membrane and hard palate mucosal grafts can be effectively used in the reconstruction of contracted sockets.
True cyclopia is a rare anomaly in which the organogenetic development of the 2 separate eyes is suppressed. We report a fetus with an association of cyclopia with other anomalies. The possible mechanism of the histogenesis is discussed, together with a review of the relevant literature.
OBJECTIVE: To investigates the surgical treatment for congenital anophthalmia. METHODS: The operation was performed in two steps. At first, the orbit was enlarged and the tarsus was reconstructed with cartilage transplantation. At the second step, blepharoptosis was corrected with levator shortening or frontalis muscle suspension. RESULTS: Five cases have been treated successfully with this method and satisfactory results were obtained. CONCLUSION: Orbit amplification and tarsus reconstruction along with ptosis correction is an effective treatment for anophthalmia both aesthetically and functionally.
