BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: The molecular predictor for cisplatin sensitivity in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still an open question at present. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of the cisplatin sensitivity/prognosis with the expression of excision repair cross complement-1 (ERCC-1), metallothionein (MT), and p53 in the paraffin-embedded tissue of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: From January 1994 to December 2001, 51 pathologically confirmed advanced NSCLC patients were included. All patients received cisplatin contained regimen chemotherapy (Gemzar + DDP or NVB + DDP) as the first line treatment. At the same time, the tumor samples were collected and the expression of ERCC-1, MT, and p53 in the tumor samples were examined by immunohistochemical method. The response rates and survival data were analyzed according to the over-expression or not of these three parameters (negative group/over-expression group). The response rates were compared by Chi(2) test. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards model were used for survival analysis. RESULTS: In these 51 patients, the expression rates of ERCC-1, MT, and p53 were 42.8%, 57.5%, and 37.8%, respectively. The response rates in negative group/over-expression group of ERCC-1, MT, and p53 were 33.3%/16.7%, 35.3%/27.3%, and 21.4%/35.3%, respectively (1.99, 1.29, and 0.61 times, respectively, P >0.05). The response rate in both ERCC-1 and MT negative group was 37.5%. In both ERCC-1 and MT over-expression (co-expression) group, the response rate was 14.3%. The former was 2.6 times of the latter (P >0.05). The average survival time in negative group/over-expression groups were 621/523 days (for ERCC-1), 556/479 days (for MT), 599/416 days (for p53), respectively. ERCC-1, MT, or p53 over-expression group showed poorer prognosis than those of negative group by Kaplan-Meier analysis. But in multivariate analysis, only p53 over-expression was an independent poor prognostic factor of survival time (Cox regression, P=0.009). CONCLUSION: Whether over-expression of ERCC-1 and MT can be used as a molecular marker of cisplatin resistance in advanced NSCLC patients need further study. Over-expression of p53 predicates poor prognosis for patients with advanced NSCLC.
The analysis showed that 58 species of trees, short-trees and shrubs in Neilingding Island of Guangdong Province were damaged by M. micrantha, of which, woody trees accounted for 67%. Short-trees and sunny shrubs were damaged most seriously, followed by the communities with low canopy density consisted of only 2 dominant species, and those with high canopy density consisted of 5 or 6 dominant species. The coverage of M. micrantha mainly related to the vertical structure of plant communities. The taller the community height and the more the synusia, the lesser was the coverage of M. micrantha. The damaging ratio mainly related to species diversity and community density. The higher the species diversity and community density, the lower the damaging ratio was. The damaging degree mainly related to the coverage of other liana. The more the coverage of other liana, the higher was the damaging degree of M. micrantha.
Polymorphism of six blood protein loci from Liaoning new-breeding cashmere goat was studied by using vertical discontinuous polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(PAGE)and the relationship between blood protein loci to economic traits was analyzed. Economic traits were analyzed by PROC GLM of SAS. And the data were multiple compared. The results showed that EsBB was the favourable genotypes to body weight, and TfBB and Amy1-2 were the favourable genotypes to cashmere yield. They may be regarded as gene marker for marker assisted selection.
We have reviewed the autopsies performed on 45 AIDS patients who died in our hospital until June 1989, comparing the post-mortem diagnosis with those made while the patient was alive and in his last hospital admission. Bacterial pneumonia, CMV infection and atypical mycobacteria were the diseases most frequently unnoticed. On the contrary, HIV encephalitis and pulmonary mycosis were the disease with the greatest number of non confirmed clinical diagnosis. The routine performance of necropsy studies to AIDS patients permits to know the most prevalent infections in our environment and should improve the diagnostic precision.

Although previous ultrasonographic studies did monitor ventricular enlargement successfully in experimentally-induced models of feline hydrocephalus, the resolution of neuroanatomic detail was relatively poor after placement of a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt because the skull had ossified over the coronal sutures. Therefore, the present study employed magnetic resonance imaging to follow the progression of ventriculomegaly more accurately, as well as to evaluate the compensatory effects of VP shunting. Hydrocephalus was induced in kittens between 7 and 10 days old by injection of kaolin into the cisterna magna. Age-matched controls received similar injections of saline. At 9 to 14 days after the kaolin injection, the hydrocephalic animals received VP shunts. Anesthetized kittens were scanned at various intervals before and after shunt placement and were killed for morphological correlation. The features observed on the magnetic resonance imaging scans were consistent with the gross morphological changes that accompanied ventricular enlargement. The lateral ventricle began to enlarge as early as 1 day after the kaolin injection, and within 3 days, both the occipital and temporal horns, along with the 4th ventricle, showed signs of moderate dilatation. By 5 days, a bilateral communication had been established through the septum pellucidum. Continued expansion of the ventricular system occurred from 6 to 20 days after injection, to the point where the cerebral cortex was reduced to less than 25% of its original thickness. The internal capsule was stretched and edematous, the caudate nucleus was compressed ventrolaterally, and the cerebellar hemispheres were eroded and/or compressed. Animals in which shunts were successfully placed demonstrated a dramatic improvement in behavior, and a reduction of about 50% in the size of the lateral ventricles within 2 days. In some cases, the lateral ventricles became slit-like within 1 week. When they were killed, about half of the animals that received shunts exhibited mild to moderate ventriculomegaly. These results indicate that magnetic resonance imaging is an excellent method for visualizing the morphological changes associated with this animal model, that these alterations occur soon after the onset of hydrocephalus, and that VP shunting can successfully reduce ventriculomegaly.

The influence of some clinical indices, clinico-laboratory and instrumental examinations on the survival of patient with liver cirrhosis was studied by implication of the programs 1D and 2D of the statistical package BMDP. The separate statistical comparisons show that of their own importance for the survival of the cirrhotic patients are the initial clinical manifestations (the latent and subclinical cirrhosis have a better prognosis), the size of the liver and the degree of portal hypertension assessed by laparoscopy according to the authors' classification in 4 grades (the patients with portal hypertension even in the absence of ascites show a significantly lower survival). The presence of concomitant diseases, the treatment applied and the cause of death do not play a significant role in the survival of the patients with liver cirrhosis.
