[Relation between smoking in reproductive-age women and disorders in reproduction].

In a retrospective anamnestic study a total of 3180 women teachers from primary schools in seven districts of the Czech Republic with a different incidence of statistically recorded reproductive disorders were examined. A professionally and socially homogeneous group was selected on purpose to standardize to a maximum extent exposure to detectable and undetectable risk factors and confounding factors in the working environment and living conditions. The respondents were classified according to their statements on smoking habits up to the age of 45 years, which was taken as the reproductive period. Although the majority of smokers belonged into the group of mild smokers with a mean consumption of 10 cigarettes per day, in this group significantly more frequent heavy menstrual bleeding, early and spontaneous abortions, deliveries of premature infants and infants born in term but with a low birthweight were recorded. Smokers had significantly more often induced abortions of unwanted pregnancies in the case-history as compared with non-smokers. After elimination of women who by the time of the survey had never been pregnant yet, heavy smokers, as compared with non-smokers had a more than twofold risk as regards difficulty to become pregnant, of spontaneous abortions, deliveries of premature infants: there was an almost double risk of delivery of a low birthweight infant even among medium heavy smokers.

Immunohistochemical localization of FSH and LH in the pituitary of male ruin lizards (Podarcis sicula campestris De Betta).

The pars distalis from the pituitary gland of adult male ruin lizards (Podarcis sicula campestris De Betta), captured during the reproductive period (May and June), was studied immunohistochemically using specific antibodies against hFSH beta, hLH beta and oLH beta with the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) procedure to determine the localization of both gonadotropins. The immunostaining with anti-hFSH beta and anti-hLH beta allowed identification of morphologically distinct FSH containing cells and LH containing cells, whereas anti-oLH beta serum showed cross-reactivity with cells immunostained with the anti-hFSH beta and anti-hLH beta sera. The gonadotropic cells took up approximatively 10.5% of the area of the pars distalis: 10% was positive for FSH, whereas only 0.5% was positive for LH. The FSH cells were distributed throughout the pars distalis, whereas the LH cells were only located in the rostral region. Double-immunostaining procedure did not reveal cells containing both gonadotropic hormones. The findings indicate that FSH and LH are produced in separate pituitary cells.

Primary pure choriocarcinoma of the ovary in reproductive ages: a case report.

Choriocarcinoma is an aggressive tumor with cyto- and syncytiotrophoblastic cells. It arises gestationally or nongestationally. Nongestational choriocarcinoma of the ovary can be pure or mixed with other germ cell tumors. Pure type is less frequent than mixed type and the diagnosis of nongestational choriocarcinoma of the ovary is very difficult in the reproductive period. A case of a 20-year-old woman with pure choriocarcinoma of the ovary is presented with a review of the literature and discussion of its origin.

[Selective estrogen receptor modulators as a new concept in preventing health risks of menopause].

Long-term estrogen deficiency after menopause is responsible for different disorders, which not only make the quality of life in the older age worse but also are the major causes of women's mortality. It is especially the case for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and dementia. The risk for these disorders can significantly be reduced by hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Unfortunately, the mean duration of the postmenopausal administration of HRT is too short to demonstrate its efficacy in preventing the mentioned diseases. In this review the new therapeutic possibilities are discussed, called selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). These structurally heterogeneous compounds interact with estrogen receptors and act as either estrogen-agonists or--antagonists according to the type of organ and physiological context (i.e., dose, target tissue and hormone concentration in the tissue). The evaluation of the effects of these compounds led to the better understanding of both antiestrogens and the whole steroid signaling system. The research of the clinical properties of SERM showed their potential benefit in the long-term care of the women in their non-reproductive period of life and demonstrated the possibility to overcome some drawbacks of HRT.

Reproductive Effort and Reproductive Values in Periodic Environments.

Life-history theory concerns the optimal spread of reproduction over an organism's life span. In variable environments, there may be extrinsic differences between breeding periods within an organism's life, affecting both offspring and parent and giving rise to intergenerational trade-offs. Such trade-offs are often discussed in terms of reproductive value for parent and offspring. Here, we consider parental life-history optimization in response to varying offspring values of a population regulated by territoriality, where the quality of the environment varies periodically. Periods are interpreted as either within-year (seasonality) or between-years variation (cyclicity). The evolutionarily stable strategy in a general model with two-phased periodicity in the environment can generate either higher or lower effort in the more favorable of the two phases; hence knowing survival prospects of offspring does not suffice for predicting reproductive effort-the future of all descendants and the parent must be tracked. We also apply our method to data on the Ural owl Strix uralensis, a species preying on cyclically fluctuating voles. The observed dynamics are best predicted by assuming delayed reproductive costs and Type II functional response. Accounting for varying offspring values can lead to cases where both reproductive effort and recruitment of offspring are higher in the phase when voles are not maximally abundant, a pattern supported by our data.

Effects of monensin fed to replacement dairy heifers during the growing and gestation period upon growth, reproduction, and subsequent lactation.

Sixty Holstein heifers initially weighing 196 kg were assigned by weight to treatments of 0, 200, and 600 mg of monensin. These treatments were fed daily until calving to determine effects of monensin on growth rate, feed consumption, feed efficiency, reproductive performance, and subsequent lactation. Throughout the feeding period the control (0 mg) heifers received sufficient feed to allow a calculated growth rate of .68 kg/day. Monensin treatment groups were fed the same amount of the identical ration over the 448-day experiment. Daily gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency for the 0, 200, and 600 mg treatments were .60, .69, .69 kg, 7.47, 7.46, 7.43 kg, and 12.41, 10.81, 10.81. Although days on trial to first estrus were not different among treatment groups, heifers fed monensin at 200 and 600 mg/day conceived 38 and 34 days sooner than 0 mg heifers. Percent conception, number of calves born, calf birth weight, and calving difficulty were not affected by treatment. Milk production was measured for 120 days subsequent to the experimental feeding of monensin. During this period heifers were fed a common ration ad libitum. Milk production of 17.1, 16.9, and 17.0 kg/day for 0, 200, and 600 mg was not affected by prior treatment.

Influence of dietary protein during the pre-breeder period on subsequent reproductive performance of large white turkeys. 1. Growth, feed consumption, and female-sex-limited reproductive traits.

Large White female turkeys of a commercial variety were used to determine the effects of low dietary protein during the pre-breeder period (12 to 32 weeks of age) on subsequent reproductive performance. Diets containing 10, 12, 14, and 17% protein were fed from 12 weeks or 20 weeks to 32 weeks of age. At 32 weeks of age, all females were fed a 17% protein breeder diet. Reproductive performance was measured for a 24-week production period. Pre-breeder feed consumption and body weight gain from 12 to 32 weeks of age increased with increased dietary protein until diets contained 14% protein. Similar results were obtained when females were fed varying protein levels from 20 to 32 weeks of age. Egg production also showed an increase with increased pre-breeder dietary protein level until diets contained 14% protein. Ten fewer eggs per hen were obtained from females previously fed the 10% protein diet than those fed the 14% (20 to 32 weeks) and 17% protein diets. Pre-breeder dietary protein level did not affect age at sexual maturity, egg weight, specific gravity or shell thickness of eggs, mortality or growth, and feed consumption of progeny. Based upon the results of this study, female breeder turkeys require at least 14% protein to 20 weeks of age and 14% from 20 to 32 weeks of age for optimum egg production.

Comparison of fertility and embryo mortality following artificial insemination of common duck females (Anas Platyrhynchos) with semen from common or Muscovy (Cairina Moschata) drakes.

The purpose of this study was to compare fertility and early embryo mortality rates (< or = 5 days of incubation) following artificial insemination (AI) of common duck females (Anas Platyrhynchos) with semen from either common or Muscovy (Cairina Moschata) drakes at various periods of the reproductive season (Period I, 27-35 weeks; Period II, 39-43 weeks and Period III, 49-56 weeks). Based on observations performed by stereomicroscopy on eggs laid from Days 2 to 10 after AI, we confirmed that fertility was significantly lower in the interbred compared to the purebred cross at each of the periods tested (purebred 58.1, 61.2 and 54.2 versus crossbred 31.0, 40.4 and 39.5 at Periods I, II and II, respectively; 0.01 < P < 0.001). In a complementary experiment, we demonstrated that the number of perivitelline spermatozoa (NPS) was markedly lower in mule (crossbred) eggs compared to common (purebred) eggs, a strong indication that initial sperm selection occurring in the lower oviduct is probably more intense after crossbred compared to purebred insemination. Comparison of early embryo mortality (EEM) between mule and common duck eggs indicated that increased levels of EEM in mule embryos corresponded to Stages II-IV of the Eyal-Giladi and Kochav classification (EGK). While a similar age-dependent increase in early embryo mortality was observed in eggs from both genetic origins during the latter periods of the reproductive season, it was also established that embryo mortality due to parental age was related rather to Stages X-XIV of the EGK classification in eggs from both genetic origins. It is concluded that the relative subfertility of mule compared to common duck eggs is probably the consequence of a more intense rate of selection of heterologous than homologous spermatozoa occurring in the vaginal portion of the oviduct while the causal origins of EEM in mule duck eggs can at least in part be identified on the basis of precise staging (by stereomicroscopy) of dead embryos.

The changing nature of elective laparoscopic surgery: a review over a 7 year period in a reproductive surgery unit.

There was a significant increase in the number of laparoscopic procedures performed in the Reproductive and Surgery Unit at the Jessop Hospital for Women over the 7 year period from 1991 to 1997. The three most common procedures were adhesiolysis/salpingo-ovariolysis, treatment of endometriosis and ovarian drilling, which together constituted over 80% of all cases. The duration of surgery and the complexity of the cases gradually increased with time. The determinants of patients staying overnight after laparoscopic surgery in decreasing order of importance were: (i) whether they had undergone surgery in the morning or in the afternoon; (ii) the operating time; and (iii) the number of entry ports used. Most (75%) of the laparoscopic procedures were performed or supervised directly by a consultant. In this study period the major complication rate was 0.7%.

Effects of supplemental vitamin E during the laying period on the reproductive performance of Taiwan native chickens.

1. One-day-old Taiwan Native Breeder female chicks were fed on maize/soybean growing diets without supplemental vitamin E from hatch to 17 weeks of age. After 17 weeks the birds (n = 300) were randomly assigned to 5 dietary treatments and fed on maize/soybean laying diets supplemented with 0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 mg/kg of vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate), respectively, until 46 weeks of age. The variates measured included: age at first egg, feed consumption (FC), feed efficiency (FE), egg production (EP), egg weight (EW), egg specific gravity (ESG), eggshell strength (ESS), fertility and hatchability. 2. The addition of 120mg/kg of vitamin E lowered the first EW (P<0.05); however, there was no significant difference in the age or body weight (BW) of pullets at first egg or mortality rate to 46 weeks of age among the treatments. FE and egg mass were improved (P<0.05) in pullets fed 80 mg/kg of supplemental vitamin E. A significant increase in EP was observed after peak EP in pullets given 80 mg/kg of supplemental vitamin E. However, this favourable effect decreased as supplemental vitamin E exceeded 80 mg/kg. 3. From 17 to 46 weeks of age, egg quality (ESG and ESS) decreased with age. However, there was no correlation between age and fertility or hatchability during the experimental period, suggesting that egg quality is more age-sensitive than reproductive performance for breeder pullets. 4. Compared with the control, fertility and hatchability of all eggs set for the treatment with 80 mg/kg supplemental vitamin E increased by 7.7 and 13.4%, respectively. There was no difference in the hatchability of fertile eggs. 5. These results suggest that using supplemental vitamin E during the laying period can improve the reproductive performance of breeder pullets. The addition of 80 mg/kg of vitamin E obtained the best performance in EP, egg mass, FE (feed/egg), hatchability and fertility.

Isonymic relationships in ethno-social categories (Argentinian colonial period) including illegitimate reproduction.

Surnames provide a useful method to study the structure of human populations for which biological data are not available. The isonymic method has had multiple applications, but difficulties emerge when dealing with groups where extramarital reproduction is common and the sample size is small, and even more so when only paternal surnames are taken into account. Therefore, it could be of interest to retain female surnames, including those of unmarried mothers. This study was carried out using all birth records froman Argentinian population in the colonial period, which was characterized by the presence of different ethno-social groups (Spanish, Indian and 'Mestizo'or mixed Spanish-Indian) and various reproductive patterns regarding legitimacy. Coefficient of relationship by isonymy (Ri) kinship matrices between geographical populations were obtained, and the results derived from sets of surnames (paternal, maternal of legitimate and illegitimate children, and all surnames in the registers) compared. The results show similar surname distribution regardless of the set of surnames and group considered. Kinship Ri matrices using paternal surnames, maternal surnames of legitimate children, maternal surnames of illegitimate children, and the set of whole surnames showed the same relationships among populations, indicating a similar pattern for Spanish, Indian and Mixed ethno-social groups. Mantel test correlation between all pairs of matrices was significant in all different ethno-social groups. The results suggest that in populations with high illegitimacy, such as that studied here, it is possible to include maternal surnames, even corresponding to single mothers, in order to consider total reproduction and therefore maximize sample size.

[Clinico-morpho-ultrasonographical characteristics of large uterine leiomyoma in females during late reproductive and premenopausal period].

The transvaginal and abdominal ultrasound examination is an effective method of defining the internal multinodular structure of large uterine leiomyoma. Ultrasonic Dopplerography allows us to evaluate uterine internal pattern and the blood flow in the patients with large uterine leiomyoma. The incidence of leiomyoma was the same in late reproductive and premenopausal uteri, although the average number of leiomyoma and the average size of the largest leiomyoma were higher in the premenopausal women. The correlation of the morphological and preoperational results of the ultrasound examination of 21 female with large uteral leiomyoma has been carried out. It has been found that the echographic picture of the nodules is defined by the combinations of the various components possessing the properties of hypoechogeneity (necrosis and the edema of the fibrous structures). Different variants of leiomyoma clinical course in the patients are of interest. The conformity of the echographic picture of large leiomyoma and their morphological structure were revealed at the examination of all the types have made up 94%. The data obtained allowed us to optimize the complex of the diagnostic investigations necessary for revealing proliferative process.

Effect of plane of nutrition from starting through the breeder period on the reproductive performance of tom turkeys.

Large type breeder toms were given high (HP) or low (LP) planes of nutrition from hatching to 29 weeks of age. Birds from each rearing treatment were divided and HP or LP breeder rations were fed to 58 weeks. Protein and energy levels of the HP feeds approximated National Research Council (NRC, 1977) recommendations while LP feeds involved substitution of corn, fat, and soybean meal for wheat, barley, and oats. Energy-protein ratio and relative essential amino acid levels were similar between treatment, respective of age. Toms given LP feeds weighed less than HP through the first 9 weeks after hatching, but they were similar thereafter until 29 weeks. Reduction in feed conversion with the LP regimen was only significant during the 18 to 21-week interval. Feed intake during the breeder period was unaffected by treatments. Toms receiving the LP breeder feed reduced their weight, particularly when preceded by LP rearing. Mortality was inversely related to average body weight with each treatment. Reproductive capacity, as judged from semen yield and sperm concentration, was more favorable when toms were reared on LP than HP feeds but only during the first few weeks of the breeder period. The LP feed given through the breeder period also proved more favorable than HP feed, particularly at the end of production. Carcass evaluations at 29 and 58 weeks indicated that the LP regimens reduced depot fat while increasing relative testes weight.

Energy intake, energy expenditure, and reproductive costs of female wild golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia).

Callitrichid females are often described as energetically constrained. We examined the energy budgets of 10 female wild golden lion tamarins (GLTs, Leontopithecus rosalia) in an effort to understand how energy intake and expenditure might influence physical condition and therefore reproductive performance. We used focal animal sampling to record behavioral data and conducted energy analyses of foods consumed by GLTs to estimate intake and expenditure. We used two-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank tests to compare intake in the reproductive vs. nonreproductive period and expenditure in the reproductive vs. nonreproductive period. Energy intake decreased during the reproductive period compared to the nonreproductive period. While total expenditure did not vary significantly across the two periods, females spent more time and therefore expended significantly more energy engaged in energetically inexpensive behaviors (i.e., sleeping or being stationary) during the reproductive period compared to the nonreproductive period. We suggest that reproductive female GLTs may adopt a reproductive strategy that includes high intake prior to pregnancy and lactation, and energy conservation during pregnancy and lactation.

Hypothyroidism affects reproductive refractoriness and the seasonal oestrous period in Welsh Mountain ewes.

Welsh Mountain ewes (n = 6) were rendered hypothyroid by daily treatment with methylthiouracil (35 mg/kg), beginning in early August and ending in late February. Plasma thyroxine levels were reduced by mid-September to about 33% of those in untreated ewes (n = 6). The two groups of ewes were held under natural daylengths until 5 October, then on 12 h light: 12 h darkness (12L:12D) until 28 February when the photoperiod was reduced to 8L:16D. The onset of reproductive cyclicity in October was similar in both groups of ewes but the end of the reproductive period occurred later (P less than 0.05) in the hypothyroid ewes (29 January +/- 7 days (S.E.M.] than in the untreated controls (6 January +/- 7 days). As a result, the duration of the seasonal reproductive period was significantly (P less than 0.05) longer in the hypothyroid (122 +/- 9 days) than in the untreated ewes (91 +/- 10 days). The number of oestrous cycles (duration 15.4 and 15.7 days in the hypothyroid and untreated ewes respectively) was 7.0 +/- 0.6 in the hypothyroid ewes and 5.0 +/- 0.5 (P less than 0.05) in the normal ewes. Reducing the photo-period overcame the reproductive refractoriness and anoestrus in both groups, the hypothyroid ewes beginning to cycle on 13 April (+/- 0.5 days) after an anoestrous period of 72.8 +/- 7.1 days. The untreated ewes began to cycle 2 weeks later on 26 April (+/- 1.7 days) after an anoestrous period of 112.0 +/- 8.5 days (P less than 0.001).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Influence of dietary protein during the pre-breeder period on subsequent reproductive performance of large white turkeys. 3. The effects of semen volume and frequency of insemination on fertility and hatchability.

Large White turkey breeders of a commercial variety were used to determine the effects of pre-breeder dietary protein, frequency of insemination, and semen volume on subsequent reproductive performance. Treatments included female dietary protein levels of 10, 12, 14, and 17% fed from 12 to 32 weeks of age and 10, 12, an 14% protein from 20 to 32 weeks of age; male dietary protein levels of 12 and 17% fed from 12 to 56 weeks of age; and artificial insemination (AI) treatments of a) .025 ml of semen at weekly intervals, b) .025 ml of semen at biweekly intervals, and c) .05 ml of semen at biweekly intervals in a factorial arrangement of treatments. Male dietary treatment had no significant effect on fertility or hatchability of fertile eggs. Female pre-breeder protein levels also had no significant effect on fertility but resulted in lower hatchability of fertile eggs during the latter part of the production period when females were fed either the 10 or 12% protein pre-breeder diets. Weekly inseminations with .025 ml of semen resulted in the highest average level of fertility during the production year (90%), followed by biweekly insemination with .05 ml (87%) and .025 ml (85%) of semen, respectively. Hatchability of fertile eggs was significantly higher for hens receiving .05 ml of semen biweekly than for the other two AI treatments during the latter half of the production year only. However, weekly inseminations caused a significant decline (6.7 eggs/hen) in egg production when compared to hens inseminated at biweekly intervals. The average number of fertile eggs was greatest for females inseminated with .05 ml semen biweekly (54.3) compared to those inseminated with .025 ml of semen biweekly (53.0) or .025 ml of semen weekly (50.2).
