The prevention of disfigurement from loss of or damage to a permanent incisor must be the aim in any caring society. The authors review the options for prevention of trauma, and conclude that the dentist can be of most practical assistance in two ways: by early reduction of pronounced overjets where appropriate, and especially by provision of well-fitting mouthguards for use in sports. The article continues with a critical appraisal of commercial forms of mouthguard, and gives a step-by-step guide to constructing a custom-made mouthguard.

Dental emergencies are common in everyday practice, and the family physician may frequently be called upon to evaluate and, at times, to provide initial care for such problems. This article acquaints the family physician with diagnosis and treatment of the most common dental emergencies: disorders secondary to trauma, including soft tissue laceration, fracture or displacement of teeth, and bone fractures; and severe pain related to acute alveolar infection.
Administration of antibiotics is usually recommended when an avulsed tooth is replanted although: a. no immediate acute infection as a consequence of tooth replantation has been known, b. their administration following tooth replantation has been questioned. The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of antibiotic administration on the healing of replanted teeth. 16 maxillary and mandibular permanent lateral incisors of four dogs aged from 5 to 7 months were immediately replanted without endodontic treatment. Oxytetracycline was administered intramuscularly the day of the experiment and twice daily through the experimental period in two of the dogs (8 teeth). The animals were sacrificed so as to provide observation periods of 15 and 22 days. Results were evaluated histopathologically in haematoxyline eosine stained sections. Results obtained showed shallower resorptine cavities without inflammatory cells in the experimental group (administration of antibiotics) than those found in the control group where inflammatory cells were also present.
The study material comprised 56 permanent teeth with traumatic pulp exposure complicated in 15 cases by partial tooth luxation in 52 children aged from 7 to 15 years. In each case routine clinical and radiological examinations were done. The time between trauma and procedure ranged from several hours to 70 days. In all teeth partial pulp amputation was done cutting off by the gentle technique a part of the coronal pulp and covering of the remaining pulp with calcium hydroxide, zinc oxide with eugenol or with Dycal, carboxyl cement and permanent filling. The analysis of the studied material showed that the greatest group comprised children aged 8-11 years (40 cases), and fractures of one-half of the crown prevailed (32 cases), point pulp exposure (32 cases), developmental stage Rc and A 1/2 of root (40 cases). The short-lasting follow-up made possible clinical and radiological control of only 39 teeth after 6 months, and 7 teeth after 12 months. After 6 months good results were obtained in 84.6% of cases.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate and discuss the indications of different splinting methods used in surgical procedures. It was proposed that the use of "semirigid" fixation method could be a more valuable technique in autogenous transplants and dental reimplants.
