Preliminary characterization of the particles from productive and abortive infections of L cells by fowl plague virus.

Particles produced during the abortive infection of L cells by fowl plague virus (Dobson strain) have been characterized and compared to the infectious particles produced by a mutant of this virus adapted to mammalian cells. The former are of apparently normal morphology but most of them are non-infectious. They have the same RNA/protein ratio as the infectious particles and the same polypeptide composition. They contain also the same RNA segments as those found in infectious particles. Possible reasons for the defectiveness of these particles are discussed.

[Experimental infection of sheep with Salmonella abortus ovis: effect of the gestational stage].

An inoculum of 1 X 10(10) S. abortus ovis was administered subcutaneously to non-pregnant Pre-Alpine X Merino ewes (group 1 : 37 days before fecundation) and to pregnant ewes (groups 2 and 3: 33 or 89 days after fecundation). The proportion of abortions to gestations in each group was 0/9, 1/9, 8/10 respectively. In group 2, there was only one abortion which occurred 64 days after inoculation. In group 3, the average time between inoculation and abortion was 19 days; three ewes died of an S. abortus ovis septicaemia after abortion and placental retention. No S. abortus ovis was isolated from the ewes' rectal swabs or from the carcasses 3 to 9 months after inoculation or abortion. The kinetics of responses in antibodies fixing the complement or agglutinating the O or H antigens were comparable in all groups; after reaching a maximum in about one week the serological titers decreased rapidly. The clinical and bacteriological results show a relationship exists between the physiological state of the ewes' genital organs and the probability of experimentally obtaining an S. abortus ovis abortive infection.

Toxoplasmosis and habitual abortion. Our experience.

The possibility that toxoplasmosis may be an important cause of single or repeated abortion has been considered for some time. The agreement among various authors is, however, far from being reached, above all in the case of habitual abortion. The present research shows that the frequency of positive serological tests on patients with habitual abortion is not substantially different from that of a control group, and that toxoplasmosis, even if only latent, may only in exceptional cases be considered a cause of habitual abortion.

[HIV and pregnancy].

Since 1990 216 HIV-infected pregnant women have been enrolled in an ongoing nationwide study named "HIV and Pregnancy" financed by the Swiss Federal Office of Health (No. 90-7007 and 93-7131). Of a total of 228 recorded pregnancies 154 continued to parturition. Until now it has been definitively established whether or not 89 offsprings have been infected with HIV by their mothers. According to clinical and immunological findings most of the pregnant women are still in early, stable stages of HIV-infection (stages II and III of the CDC classification system in 94% of the subjects; mean CD4-cell count around 600/microliters). HIV infection was the consequence of an intravenous substance abuse in two thirds of the women. Detailed interviews revealed an alarming negligence with regard to compliance with safer sex recommendations and contraception. Advisory services of specialized AIDS information centers have very rarely been called on. In our group, the vertical transmission rate shows a statistically significant correlation with low maternal anti-HIV-p24 antibody titers, high serum neopterin- and IgA-concentrations, and also with the use of forceps and vacuum in vaginal delivery. Maternal substance abuse but not HIV infection itself resulted in an incidence of preterm deliveries roughly twice as high as in the normal Swiss population.
