Soluble substrate concentrations in leachate from field scale MSW test cells.

We have monitored non-biodegradable soluble COD of leachates derived from two different landfill test cells, which were constructed at Odayeri Sanitary Landfill and operated with (C2) and without (C1) leachate recirculation for 1080 days. Refuse height and the placement area of test cells were 5m and 1250m(2) (25mx50m), respectively. For leachates of both cells, initial inert soluble COD fraction (f(non)) increased from it is initial value of 0.01 to around 0.1 after 300 days of operation. Due to the development of anaerobic conditions, the value showed an increasing trend and the maximum value of 0.4 was reached on day 600. Several suitable models were also fitted to the experimental data on the basis of statistical reasoning. So as to evaluate the goodness of obtained fits, the calculated values of the sum of squares due to error (SSE), R-square, the residual degrees of freedom (DFE), adjusted R-square, and root mean square errors (RMSE) associated with the model results were compared. Logistic model for C1 test cell and Gompertz model for C2 test cell gave the best fits to the experimental data. Moreover, using the fitted model parameters, pollution loads, and BOD/COD ratios in leachates from C1 (control) and C2 (recirculation) cells were estimated and deeply discussed. The results of the study can be satisfactorily used to predict change in the composition of leachate over time, which may help to obtain better effluent quality in biological treatment of leachate.

Multiple logistic regression modelling substantiates multifactor contributions associated with sick building syndrome in residential interiors in Mauritius.

This paper presents a mathematical model that depicts the relationship between the possibility of occurrence of common health problems and factors leading to Sick Building Syndrome symptoms in domestic interiors in Mauritius. The prevalence of upper respiratory symptoms (dry eyes, runny nose), central nervous system symptoms (headache, nervousness), and musculoskeletal symptoms (pain/stiffness in shoulders/neck) were found to be elevated when responses were statistically regressed to type of building and age of respondents. The model presented here will be useful in helping to identify and quantify the relative role of factors that contribute to Sick Building Syndrome. Thus it may be possible to evaluate the effectiveness of current building operation practices and to prioritise allocations of resources for reduction of risk associated with Indoor Environmental Air Quality.

Bayesian decision procedures based on logistic regression models for dose-finding studies.

Early-phase clinical trials, conducted to determine the appropriate dose of an experimental drug to take forward to later trials, are considered. The objective is to find the dose associated with some low probability of an adverse event. A Bayesian model is presented, and a decision-theoretic procedure for finding the optimal doses for each of a series of cohorts of subjects is derived. The procedure is flexible and can easily be conducted using standard statistical software. The results of simulations investigating the properties of the procedure are presented.

Independent predictors of late hydrocephalus in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage--analysis by multivariate logistic regression model.

OBJECT: We determined independent variables contributing to the development of late hydrocephalus after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). METHODS: A total of 114 consecutive patients who underwent surgery for aneurysms within 72 h after SAH were studied. Thirty-nine patients underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement (14 patients within 30 days and 25 patients more than 30 days after onset). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess relationships among various variables and shunt placement. RESULTS: Three variables were found to be independently associated with VPS patients: (1) the rate of SAH clearance; (2) the duration of external cerebrospinal fluid drainage, and (3) presence of neurological deficits 2 weeks after surgery, which indicates brain damage mainly caused by intraoperative manipulation and cerebral vasospasm. CONCLUSION: As in previous reports, intraoperative clot removal and duration of external CSF drainage were found to be closely related to the incidence of hydrocephalus. Brain damage due to intraoperative manipulation and cerebral vasospasm is seemed to be involved in the occurrence of late hydrocephalus in this study.

Extended Mantel-Haenszel estimating procedure for multivariate logistic regression models.

A class of estimating functions is proposed for the estimation of multivariate relative risk in stratified case-control studies. It reduces to the well-known Mantel-Haenszel estimator when there is a single binary risk factor. Large-sample properties of the solutions to the proposed estimating equations are established for two distinct situations. Efficiency calculations suggest that the proposed estimators are nearly fully efficient relative to the conditional maximum likelihood estimator for the parameters considered. Application of the proposed method to family data and longitudinal data, where the conditional likelihood approach fails, is discussed. Two examples from case-control studies and one example from a study on familial aggregation are presented.

[Interferon treatment for chronic hepatitis C--assessment of 3 regimens in patients received more than 500MU interferon treatment and their effect predictive factors for interferon treatment using multivariate analysis with the logistic regression model].

Chronic hepatitis C patients (n = 115) were treated with interferon (IFN). Total dose employed was more than 500 MU. The response rate was assessed among the three treatment groups: 2W continuous+TIW, 4W continuous+TIW, 8W continuous+TIW. The IFN treatment effect predictive factors were also assessed. Complete response (CR) rate, CR with serum HCV-RNA disappearance rate, responders' histology activity index score changes between before and after treatment, and responders' hepatocytes HCV-RNA disappearance rate did not differ among the three treatment regimens. CR to IFN treatment was dependent on serum HCV-RNA and HCV serotype. Patients of low serum HCV-RNA and serotype II were responsive to IFN treatment.

Hierarchical dependency models for multivariate survival data with censoring.

A family of partial likelihood logistic models is proposed for clustered survival data that are reported in discrete time and that may be censored. The possible dependence of individual survival times within clusters is modeled, while distinct clusters are assumed to be independent. Two types of clusters are considered. First, all clusters have the same size and are identically distributed. Second, the clusters may vary in size. In both cases our asymptotic results apply to a large number of small independent clusters.
