[Epidemiological data on anaemia during malignant affections].

FREQUENT IN THE CASE OF CANCER: According to a European multicentre study on 15 000 cancer patients, the percentage of anaemia exceeded 66% during the development of solid tumours and 72% during development of malignant tumours. The lowest levels of haemoglobin were correlated with the lowest performance status, however no treatment had been prescribed for anaemia in the majority of patients. MULTIPLE MYELOMAS AND LYMPHOMAS: The frequency of anaemia appeared just as high during these malignant affections and the correlation between haemoglobin levels and performance status was just as clear. Likewise, around one half of the anaemic patients had not been treated in an adapted or efficient manner. SIGNIFICANCE OF ANEMIA DURING LYMPHOMAS: It appeared that the anaemia of Hodgkin's disease, related to the inflammation, was correlated with shorter survival, whereas the anaemia of non-hodgkin lymphoma, related to medullar infiltration, generally affected the complete rate of response.

[Leishmaniasis in Algiers: epidemiologic data].

The authors review the situation on human and canine leishmaniasis observed in Algiers during the period 1990-1997. 1800 sera have been tested by IFAT. The frequency of canine leishmaniasis rises to 37%. 25% of the positive dogs are asymptomatic. The canine leishmaniasis annual fluctuations seem to vary from one year to another, with an increase of number of cases comparing with the last period. Human leishmaniasis is also increasing in Algiers, where 22 cases of HVL and 40 cases CL have been notified. Nine strains of Leishmania (5 from dogs and 4 from human) were isolated and identified by isoenzymes eletrophoresis technique. All stocks were belonging to Leishmania infantum complex. To complete the study, the seasonal dynamic of phlebotomine sandflies was carried out in the same area where 2959 specimens have been captured. The results showed the predominance of P. perniciosus and P. longicuspis, the main vectors of visceral leishmaniasis in Algeria.

[Epidemiological data about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in a sample of Marabino children].

AIMS: This study reports the findings of a research project aimed at determining the rate of prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in school aged children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Different behavioural and cognitive measures were administered to a sample of children between 3 and 13 years of age obtained by means of a multistage sampling procedure that was stratified by socioeconomic and educational level. The sample was made up of 394 children; 33.25% (n = 131) were females and the remaining 66.75% (n = 263) males. The mean age of the sample was 7.64 years old (SD: 2.33). The assessment battery included the Conners Rating Scales adapted for parents and teachers, the abbreviated version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC III) and for Preschool children Revised (WPPSI R), several academic achievement scales, development history and DISC IV. RESULTS: The estimated prevalence of ADHD was 10.15%, and a figure of 2.03% was obtained for the hyperactive type, 0.51% for the inattentive subtype, and 7.61% for the combined subtype. Prevalence was higher for males, the ratio being 3:1. Subjects performance in the cognitive and academic measures was within the average interval. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of ADHD in our population oscillates around the average figures reported in other countries. This study confirms the prevalence of ADHD in the population of Venezuela, with a distribution of subtypes and in terms of gender similar to those reported in the literature.

[Inflammatory markers in dialysis: epidemiological data].

Inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein are frequently elevated in patients treated by dialysis. Serum concentration of these markers are much higher than in the general population, in which it has been clearly shown that chronic inflammation is associated to the occurrence of cardiovascular events. The mechanisms leading to chronic inflammation in dialysis patients may be related to chronic inflammation per se, or to dialysis. Furthermore, in these patients, raised inflammatory markers are associated to malnutrition and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The association of inflammation, malnutrition and atherosclerosis defines the so-called MIA syndrome.
