Synovial sarcoma has been induced in the knee joints of rats by intra-articular injection of 9-10-dimethyl-1-2-benzanthracene. Tumours developed from three to six months after the last injection. The neoplasms obtained were classified as synovial sarcoma (50%), fibrosarcoma (25%), giant cell sarcoma (15%), malignant fibrous histiocytoma (10%). The synovial membrane in the treated knee joints presented a chronic synovitis associated with fibrosis and proliferation of the lining cells. The primitive tumour spread locally infiltrating muscle and the adjacent bones. Metastases occurred most frequently to the lungs (70%) and liver (20%); lymph nodes were involved in 10%.

The role of lymphocytes in dogs re-challenged with canine transmissible sarcoma (CTS) was investigated histologically and immunologically. Tumors were detected on the 3rd day, began to regress on the 9th day and disappeared on approximately the 15th day after the secondary transplantation (AST). The CTS cells were surrounded by lymphocytes which had infiltrated from the early stage, degenerated and ultimately disappeared. Most of the lymphocytes expressed thymocyte antigen (Ta) on the cell membrane surface. The numbers of lymphocytes and Ta-positive lymphocytes in peripheral blood increased gradually AST. The blastogenic responses of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) induced by 3 kinds of mitogens were elevated strikingly from the early stage AST. These results suggest that Ta-positive lymphocytes play an important role in vivo in the regression of tumors and that the immunological activity of PBL is stimulated immediately AST.
Walleye dermal sarcoma virus (WDSV) has been identified as the causative agent of a benign neoplasia of walleye Stizostedion vitreum, walleye dermal sarcoma (WDS). We conducted an experimental transmission regimen to determine if WDSV is capable of inducing dermal sarcoma in the closely related sauger S. canadense. Nearly all of young-of-the-year saugers (96%) inoculated with filtrates of spring-collected tumors developed dermal sarcomas, while all of the inoculated walleyes developed tumors. Most of the sauger tumors were limited to the skin, but invasive tumors, similar to those previously observed in experimental walleyes, were observed in some fish.
