Resin-ionomer and hybrid-ionomer cements: part II, human clinical and histologic wound healing responses in specific periodontal lesions.

Twenty-five subjects with a total of 50 subgingival restorations participated in this study. At the beginning of the investigation, nine teeth that were considered hopeless because of the extent of their pathology were selected for extraction to evaluate histologically the restorations and their effect on the adjacent tissues. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the responses to the clinical applications as well as to the placement of resin-ionomers in subgingival lesions. Clinical and histologic evidence of epithelial and connective tissue adherence to resin-ionomer restorative materials was observed during the healing process.

Prefabricated post-and-core systems: an overview.

Restorative dentists should have a working knowledge of more than one post-and-core system. This review is designed to encourage them to consider systems they might not have considered otherwise. Many restorative dentists learn to use one prefabricated post-and core system, and they have only one system on hand. When the system on hand is the solution, there is no need for an alternative. However, no single prefabricated post-and-core system can fit all endodontic restorative requirements. The best way to pick an optimum system design is to compare alternatives. The vast assortment of available system components, many supported solely by experimental data without direct clinical corroboration, makes comparison and selection a challenging process.

Apexification & apexogenesis.

When there is pulpal involvement of permanent teeth with incompletely formed roots, techniques for the induction of apical closure should be completed before endodontic therapy is begun. Apexification is a method of inducing a calcified barrier at the apex of a nonvital tooth with incomplete root formation. Apexogenesis refers to a vital pulp therapy procedure performed to encourage physiological development and formation of the root end.

Plasma rich in growth factors: preliminary results of use in the preparation of future sites for implants.

This article presents preliminary clinical evidence of the beneficial effect of the use of plasma rich in growth factors of autologous origin. The plasma is obtained from the individual patient by plasmapheresis. The macroscopic and microscopic results obtained with bone regeneration using this technique, which uses no membrane or barrier, can be observed. The incorporation of these concepts can introduce several advantages, including the enhancement and acceleration of bone regeneration and more rapid and predictable soft tissue healing.

[Possibilities and limitations in the conservation of traumatized deciduous teeth].

A survey is given on the various traumatic lesions of deciduous teeth and the therapeutical measures. The latter aim at retaining every traumatized tooth, if possible, in order not to disturb the growth of the jaws. A study by the authors on 116 recently traumatized deciduous teeth showed that almost half of the teeth could be retained.

Restoration longevity and analysis of reasons for the placement and replacement of restorations provided by vocational dental practitioners and their trainers in the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the reasons given by vocational dental practitioners and their trainers for placement and replacement of restorations. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Each participant was asked to record the reason for placement or replacement of restorations. The age and class of the restoration being replaced were also recorded, as was the material being used and the material being replaced (if known). RESULTS: Details of the reason for placement or replacement was received on 9,031 restorations. Of the restorations placed, 53.9% were amalgam, 29.8% were resin composite, and 16.3% were glass-ionomer cement. The reasons for placement or replacement of the restorations were principally primary caries (41.3%), secondary caries (21.9%), tooth fracture (6.4%), marginal fracture or degradation (6.1%), and noncarious defects (5.8%). Of the amalgam restorations, most were placed to restore Class II and Class I preparations (65.8% and 29.9%, respectively). Of the composite restorations, most were placed in Class III and Class V cavities (35.5% and 26.3%, respectively). Glass-ionomer cement was used predominantly to restore Class V cavities (63.5%). CONCLUSION: Secondary caries was the most prevalent reason for replacement of restorations, regardless of material. Statistical analysis indicated that amalgam provided significantly greater longevity than composite or glass-ionomer materials.

[Maturation of residual tissue, left in the jaw after injury].

An eight-year old patient was observed for a period of eleven months: after the traumatic loss of a front tooth, the root of which had not fully grown, the maturing of the remnants of the follicle which were probably injured by the avulsion and not yet fully mineralized, was studied. In the histological examination of the enucleated dental hard material, regions of irregular dentin were found.

Restoration of endodontically treated teeth with posts and cores.

This article is a review of the current technique and materials used in the restoration of endodontically treated teeth with post and core materials and procedures. It is intended to aid clinicians in making selections which are appropriate to their individual practices through the evaluation of relevant literature about the restoration of endodontically treated teeth.
