Visual homing in analog hardware.

Insects of several species rely on visual landmarks for returning to important locations in their environment. The "average landmark vector model" is a parsimonious model which reproduces some aspects of the visual homing behavior of bees and ants. To gain insights in the structure and complexity of the neural apparatus that might underly the navigational capabilities of these animals, the average landmark vector model was implemented in analog hardware and used to control a mobile robot. The experiments demonstrate that the apparently complex task of visual homing might be realized by simple and mostly peripheral neural circuits in insect brains.

An analog neural network implementation in fixed time of adjustable-order statistic filters and applications.

In this paper, we show a neural network implementation in fixed time of adjustable order statistic filters, including sorting, and adaptive-order statistic filters. All these networks accept an array of N numbers Xi = S(Xi)M(Xi)2E(Xi) as input (where S(Xi) is the sign of Xi, M(Xi) is the mantissa normalized to m digits, and Ex is the exponent) and employ two kinds of neurons, the linear and the threshold-logic neurons, with only integer weights (most of the weights being just +1 or -1) and integer threshold. Therefore, this will greatly facilitate the actual hardware implementation of the proposed neural networks using currently available very large scale integration technology. An application of using minimum filter in implementing a special neural network model neural network classifier (NNC) is given. With a classification problem of l classes C1, C2,.. ., C1, NNC classifies in fixed time an unknown vector to one class using a minimum-distance classification technique.

[Spectrum analysis of gastrointestinal potentials from the body surface].

Spectral analysis was employed to assess the electric activity of the stomach and intestine from the body surface. Equipment including a microcomputer and a specially designed program were used. Examinations of 134 normal subjects and patients with various gastrointestinal conditions have demonstrated a sufficient accuracy of the method in the detection of gastrointestinal dyskinesia and in assessment of gastrointestinal function, as well as in presentation of individual elements of regular gastrointestinal activity.

Scalable closed-boundary analog neural networks.

In many pattern-classification and recognition problems, separation of different swarms of class representatives is necessary. As well, in function-approximation problems, neurons with a local area of influence have demonstrated measurable success. In our previous work, we have shown how intrinsic quadratic characteristics of traditional metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices can be used to implement hyperspherical discriminating surfaces in hardware-implemented neurons. In this work, we further extend the concept from quadratic forms to more-arbitrary closed-boundary shapes. Accordingly, we demonstrate how intrinsic characteristics of submicron MOS devices can be utilized to implement efficient pattern discriminators for various applications and, through representative simulations, show their success in some typical function-approximation problems. Further, we offer two mathematical interpretations of possible roles for these networks: Geometrically, we show that our networks employ closed hypercone shapes as their discriminating surfaces; analytically, we show that a set of these synapses connected to a common integrating body calculates the distance between their inputs and weight vectors using a power norm. The feasibility of the idea is practically investigated by design, implementation, and test of a three-dimensional (3-D) closed-boundary pattern classifier, fabricated in 0.35-microm complimentary MOS, whose results are reflected in this work.

Comparison of the Panadent Quick Analyzer and Analog Selector systems.

The use of pantographic tracings of mandibular movements is an important aspect of clinical diagnosis and treatment planning in prosthodontics. This study compared an average value system using a Quick Analyzer and computer-generated analogs to an Analog Selector, a device developed as an alternative method for determining the amount of laterotrusive movement and condylar inclination using a lateral interocclusal check record technique. The Quick Analyzer system produced more accurate and more consistent recordings than the Analog Selector. Both methods can be considered as excellent tools for teaching, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
