[Comparative in vitro action of various antimitotic agents on cell lines established from human brain neoplasms].

The effects of six chemotherapeutic drugs currently used in human gliomas treatment were tested with an in vitro cytotoxicity test. Out of six, VM 26 proved to be the most potent against tumor cells along with a moderate cytotoxicity against normal brain or embryonnic human cells. This specificity did not seem to be related to differences in cellular growth rates.

[Thrombosis of the inferior vena caval and right atrium in amoebic abscess of the liver].

Amoebic abscess of the liver is sometimes complicated by deep venous thrombosis but extension to the right atrium is rarely observed. The authors report the case of inferior vena caval thrombosis extending to the right atrium in a case of amoebic hepatic abscess. The patient was treated initially by antibiotherapy with metronidazole associated with intravenous anticoagulation. Rapid extension of the thrombus despite this treatment led to the initiation of thrombolysis. There were no embolic complications and the outcome was good. Apart from the rarity of this complication, this case poses the problem of the management of these patients. No previous reports of the use of thrombolysis were found in the medical literature. In the light of previous publications and the present case, the authors suggest investigation by CT scanning, echocardiography and venous Doppler ultrasonography in all cases of hepatic amoebic abscess.

[Genograms and the vital cycle of a family].

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the importance of the genogram in order to identify the family vital cycle stages and demographic aspects related to the first two phases of this cycle. To study frequency of the vital cycle stages in families from 2 health centers and their relationships with behavioral and emotional traits and with health problems. DESIGN: Transversal descriptive study. LOCALE: Primary Health Care; Health Care Centers in Cartuja and Almanjayar. PATIENTS AND OTHER PARTICIPANTS: 347 genograms were compiled and analyzed by 6 licensed nurses. RESULTS: The reading of genograms made it possible to identify the vital family cycle stages in 97% of those studied. We discovered that 28.6% of the families were in Stage IV; 20% in Stage II-A; and 15% in Stage V. It appears that the contraction stage occurs more frequently in the Cartuja Health Center. The starting age of the formative stage has been reducing since the 1960s; at present it is at 21.7 years for males and 19 for females. The average duration which couples took to pass on to the II-A extension stage was 1.62 years. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that a genogram is an excellent tool to use to classify families according to the vital family cycle stages. Furthermore, to be able to identify the point where a family lies in this cycle is an important piece of data in a nurse's work.

Effect of the antioxidants selenium and beta-carotene on HIV-related endothelium dysfunction.

Patients infected with HIV are at increased risk of atherosclerosis, and have evidence of endothelium dysfunction. The hypothesis was tested that HIV-related endothelium dysfunction is related to loss of antioxidants. This was done by the supplementation of the antioxidants selenium and beta-carotene. We supplemented the diet of 10 HIV-seropositive subjects with 100 microg selenium daily, 11 subjects with 30 mg beta-carotene twice daily while 15 subjects were not supplemented. Plasma was obtained at outset and after a year, and tested by ELISA for endothelial cell, platelet and inflammatory markers. The non-supplemented patients experienced increases in von Willebrand factor and soluble thrombomodulin (both p <0.01). There were no changes in any of the indices in the patients taking selenium or beta-carotene. Increased von Willebrand factor and soluble thrombomodulin in the non-supplemented patients imply increased damage to the endothelium over the year of the study. Therefore we interpret the lack of increase in the patients taking antioxidants as evidence of the protection of the endothelium by these agents.
