Factors influencing the frequency of consanguineous marriages in Japan: marital distance and opportunity of encounter.

The inbreeding coefficients (F) were estimated according to marital distance between birthplaces and the opportunity of encounter. As for marital distance, the F-value was the highest for the shortest distance (0.00252), whereas the F-values were similar in the other distance classes (0.00072-0.00097). As for opportunities of encounter, the F-value was 30-37 times higher in the group for friendship from the time of childhood (0.00986) than in those for school, workplace and social gatherings (0.00033) and for chance meetings (0.00027).

Consanguinity↗

A study of consanguinity between the parents of transsexuals.

During recent years there have been published a number of reports of more than one case of transsexualism or other sexual pathology occurring within the same family. As long as the aetiology of transsexualism remains unknown the authors consider that a possible effect of recessive genes cannot be definitely excluded. To ascertain whether transsexual patients are born of cousin marriages to a greater extent than expected the authors have fully investigated family relationships for 61 known cases of transsexualism. No case of cousin marriage was disclosed.

Recurrence risks to sibs of MS index cases: impact of consanguineous matings.

Using population-based data, the authors identified 24 MS index cases whose parents were related. Twenty-two had 67 sibs of whom 6 also had MS, yielding a recurrence risk of approximately 9%, significantly higher than for sibs of MS index cases from nonconsanguineous parents. These findings support the concept that multiple interacting genes increase the risk of MS.

A hereditary syndrome with retinopathy and ataxia or deafness in two consanguineous brothers.

Of two brothers born of Sephardic first cousin parents one presented with congenital neural deafness, nyctalopia, visual field loss, flat ERG, unintelligible speech and a shuffling gait, and the other with severe ataxia, severe decreased visual acuity, mild field loss, decreased ERG, dysarthric speech and high grade myopia. The diagnosis of Usher syndrome type 1 or 2 is discussed as well as the possibility that both brothers have different genetic disorders.

[Maxillodental anomalies and consanguineous marriages].

Families of 549 probands and families of 123 probands with cleft lip and/or palate were examined in order to evaluate the relationship between marriages between close relatives and the incidence and structure of maxillodental diseases. Clinical and genealogical analysis of families of probands with maxillodental abnormalities and cleft lip and/or palate showed a significantly higher incidence of marriages between close relatives and an inbreeding coefficient in these families. Analysis of the population and familial incidence of maxillodental abnormalities and the inbreeding coefficient will help the physicians consulting such families more accurately evaluate the risk and improve the efficacy of prevention of such conditions.
