OFFthe rice fields of the Krasnodar Territory the intensive epizootic of leptospirosis icterohemorrhagica can be observed in the population of Norway rats (995 animals have been examined and 102 cultures obtained) the whole year round. The highest intensity of the epizootic process is known to fall on the end of summer and the beginning of autumn (45-50% of Leptospira carriers). The natural focus of leptospirosis on the rice-growing complex is epidemiologically dangerous. The epizootic process can be suppressed by reducing the population of rats by means of poisoned baits. The alternate use of different poisons ( rotindan , brodifacum ) given in the form of paraffined briquettes has proved to be most expedient.

The effect was studied of the swine-feeding technology in five industrial complexes on the population density of the harmful rodents in them. This made it necessary to estimate the population density of the rodents in each productional section of the swine-breeding complexes, and to work out their technologic characteristic on the nutrition principle. It was established that the population density of rodents correlated positively with their access to feeds. In sections where rated, mechanical, and protected feeding was prectised the number of rodents were considerably lower than in sections with unrated feeding of pigs. It is believed that the rat invasion of the buildings in the industrial swine-breeding complexes is a factor that contributes to the rise of populations of harmful rodents, while the vast access to feeds is of greater importance chiefly for their further development.
Studied was the link between the three most commonly applied methods of the deratization practice, aiming to determine the population density of rodents -- the visual method, the untoxic baits method, and the 24-hour/trap method. The three of them were practically tested and approbated in the conditions of an industrial swine-breeding complex, resp., in various productional sections. Data processing was carried out statistically through the methods of the nonparametric and the correlation analysis and the analysis of variance. It was found that the 24-hour/trap method gave the most minimal quantitative characteristics of the rodent population density, while the method making use of untoxic baits was shown to offer the most highly reproducible results. The differences between the average density values obtained by the three methods were essential. On the other hand, the discrepancies in the character of the link between the results obtained with the use of these methods were probably due to the variations in the activity of rodents. This, in turn, was associated with the use of various technologies in the individual sections, the various forms of rodent activity itself as recorded by each single one of the methods, and the varying density in these sections.
Tested was the toxic action and the deratization effect of the new acutely acting rodenticide EL614 recently introduced into deratization practice. The experiments were carried out with laboratory rats and pigs as well as with the rats found in a swine breeding complex. Studied were the morphologic and histopathologic changes in the internal organs of rats that had swallowed baits carrying the preparation in various concentration. It was found that LD50 for rats up to the 24th hour after swallowing the poison was 4.13 mg/kg, and it was 1.78 mg/kg at the 48t hour, and 1.32 mg/kg at the 72nd hour. Intoxication and death set in as the result of impaired function of almost all organs, which was explained by the lipidotropic action of the preparation. Particularly severe were the lesions (hemodynamic and degenerative) in the brain. In field trials the baits contained EL614 in concentration of 0.005 per cent, showed a low deratization effect the first day after setting them. In this case the effect could be explained by the stress developing among the rodent population. The same baits in amounts surpassing 300-400 g caused intoxication and death in pigs of 20 kg live weight.
Observations were carried out in three breeding complexes to study the conditions under which rodents invaded the premises of pigs. The species composition of the rodents was determined through making use of biometric data. The number of rodents was established via the method of the 'trap-per-24 hr periods', the inquiry-visual method, and the method of the powdered plots. With the use of the 'visual' method at 4 hr intervals the rhythm was found of the activity of rodents as well as the habitats preferred by them. It was established that in all three swine breeding complexes the most active movement at night was at 22.00. The canalization and shafts were shown to be one of the basic ways for rodents to invade the barns, storage-houses, and halls. The wide slits of the grates and fans without nets also contributed to rodent invasion. The conclusion was drawn that with the building patterns used in the swine breeding complexes there were conditions that rendered possible the establishment of habitats in them. Suggested is the working out of normative parameters concerning the rat invasion.
