Pyogenic liver abscesses in a child spreading to pulmonary and subcutaneous tissues: case report.

Pyogenic liver abscess is a rare and life-threatening disease in children. Our case is noteworthy because of the rapid advancement of liver abscesses without any other systemic disorder. A 16-year-old girl was admitted to the hospital with fatigue, pallor, weight loss and high fever. In physical examination a fluctuating mass was observed under the scapular area and hepatosplenomegaly was found. In computed tomography, three septated cystic lesions which looked like abscesses were demonstrated in the liver. The abscess was drained through percutaneous route. Right pleural empyema with clinical features of adult respiratory distress syndrome appeared after the first day of treatment. Bacteroides sp. was isolated from pus. On the twentieth day of the therapy, control abdominal computed tomography revealed two new abscesses in the liver. They were drained and the antibiotic therapy was continued with ticarcillin-clavulanate, fluconazole and levofloxacin. By the end of the first week of the therapy, the fever of the patient had abated. This therapy was continued for four weeks; 15 days after the end of the therapy there was prominent healing of the liver lesions with only one necrotic remnant 2 cm in diameter on abdominal computed tomography.

Growth suppression of subcutaneously inoculated hepatic tumors after injection of syngeneic liver cells into the subcutaneous tissue of rats.

One week after the sc injection of minced tissues of the livers, kidneys, or spleens of W, Donryu, and MP rats into the left back of syngeneic rats, ascites-type tumor cells derived from rat hepatoma (AH 130) or Walker carcinosarcoma cells derived from rat breast tumor were inoculated sc into the right back. Ascites hepatoma cell growth was slowest in the group given the liver preparation, whereas no significant difference was noted in the growth of Walker carcinosarcoma in all groups. The results were similar in all strains.

Inhibition of IL-8-induced W3/25+ (CD4+) T lymphocyte recruitment into subcutaneous tissues of rats by selective depletion of in vivo neutrophils with a monoclonal antibody.

IL-8 recruits both neutrophils and lymphocytes in vitro and in vivo. To elucidate the mechanisms of lymphocyte recruitment in vivo by IL-8, we examined the role of neutrophil infiltration through selective depletion of circulating neutrophils using a mAb, RP-3. Selective depletion of neutrophils inhibited the IL-8 induced in vivo migration of the W3/25+ (CD4+) T cell subset but did not inhibit that of the MRC-OX8+ (CD8+) subset. These results suggest that CD4+ T cell migration into IL-8-injected s.c. tissues depends on the prior infiltration of neutrophils chemoattracted directly by IL-8.

[Experimental study on the implantation of a vascular bundle into subcutaneous tissue for improving local blood supply].

This paper reports that the adjacent vascular bundle was transferred into tubed flap in order to investigate the course of the angiogenesis of the vascular bundle by method of microangiography, pathology, transparent tissue specimens and microvascular casts, and effect on blood supply by measuring blood flow and skin temperature. The studies gave us the following results: New capillaries of vascular bundle occurred at 2nd day after operation, and gradually increased in number and then formed rich bush-like vessels on the surface of vascular bundle. The time of the earliest anastomosis between the vessels of the implanted vascular bundle and the recipient site was four day postoperation. The early anastomosed vessels were a few capillaries and some of them were changed into vein-like or artery-like structure. Improving the blood circulation in tubed flap begins on five day postoperation. The anastomosed vessels between the vascular bundle and tubed flap tend to stabilize at 10 day postoperation. The higher pressure in small arteries of the vascular bundle may be one of the main factors that vascular bundle possesses potential ability in angiogenesis and improves the blood circulation.
