Analog neural network-based helicopter gearbox health monitoring system.

The development of a reliable helicopter gearbox health monitoring system (HMS) has been the subject of considerable research over the past 15 years. The deployment of such a system could lead to a significant saving in lives and vehicles as well as dramatically reduce the cost of helicopter maintenance. Recent research results indicate that a neural network-based system could provide a viable solution to the problem. This paper presents two neural network-based realizations of an HMS system. A hybrid (digital/analog) neural system is proposed as an extremely accurate off-line monitoring tool used to reduce helicopter gearbox maintenance costs. In addition, an all analog neural network is proposed as a real-time helicopter gearbox fault monitor that can exploit the ability of an analog neural network to directly compute the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) as a sum of weighted samples. Hardware performance results are obtained using the Integrated Neural Computing Architecture (INCA/1) analog neural network platform that was designed and developed at The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve a 100% fault detection rate with 0% false alarm rate by performing a DFT directly on the first layer of INCA/1 followed by a small-size two-layer feed-forward neural network and a simple post-processing majority voting stage.

[Model studies of chronotropic cardiac autoregulation].

The dynamic response of heart rate to a step change in transmural pressure and sinusoidally varying pressure was investigated. A simple analog model is described simulating these autoregulation of the cardiac rate.

Resolution limit of serial sections for 3D reconstruction of tubular cristae in rat liver mitochondria.

Following stereo, high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) of various rat tissue mitochondria prepared by mild glutaraldehyde fixation followed by freeze cleavage and extraction of the cytosol (Lea and Hollenberg, 1989a), a new model for the ultrastructure of mitochondrial cristae has been developed (Lea and Hollenberg, 1989b). The cristae mitochondriales, previously considered in most cells to have a shelf like structure, were found in many cell types including hepatocytes by HRSEM to be tubes which spanned the mitochondrial matrix and were continuous with the inner mitochondrial membrane at both ends. Despite computer aided, serial, reconstruction of serial thin sections examined in the transmission electron microscope (TEM), tubular cristae in mitochondria have not been resolved entirely, even though circular cross sectional profiles of cristae have been observed in the TEM. The current study was undertaken to probe this deficiency and to understand its cause. In this study, the problems of inherent contrast and resolution loss in the digitized image have been reduced by using a computer based, background, extraction process analogous in the computer to the chemical cytosol extraction process used for HRSEM (Lea and Hollenberg, 1988; Hollenberg et al., 1989). Despite the use of this membrane enhancement algorithm, it was still not possible to reconstruct entire tubular cristae, as observed by HRSEM, even when the micrograph negatives were digitized and reprocessed (Lea and Hollenberg, 1989b). A comparison of serial section thickness deduced from the diffraction colour of the respective section (60 nm) to the measured diameter of tubular cristae profiles (30 nm), with membrane thickness of 10 nm, suggested that this size disparity is responsible for the apparent loss of resolution.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A digital filter for brain stem evoked responses.

Digital filtering was compared with conventional analog filtering of brain stem evoked responses. These two types of filtering were compared with regard to efficiency in recovering the signal from the background noise and distortion of the wave morphology. The shift of the peaks in the response by filtering was considered. Digital filtering was found to be superior to analog filtering. A digital filter that has been found efficient in practical use is described.

Real time image processing with an analog vision chip system.

A linear analog network model is proposed to characterize the function of the outer retinal circuit in terms of the standard regularization theory. Inspired by the function and the architecture of the model, a vision chip has been designed using analog CMOS Very Large Scale Integrated circuit technology. In the chip, sample/hold amplifier circuits are incorporated to compensate for statistic transistor mismatches. Accordingly, extremely low noise outputs were obtained from the chip. Using the chip and a zero-crossing detector, edges of given images were effectively extracted in indoor illumination.
