The sedimentation rate and fractional dimension of the floc was studied during the process of the organic waste water treatment with modified natural polymer (CMS) and polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC). Irregular garrulous form of the floc was observed with microscope and electron-scanning microscope. The results showed that the sedimentation rate was 2.6 mm/min with the modified natural polymer (CMS) and 1.7 mm/min without CMS in condition of keeping the pH value to 6.86 and added quantity of PAC to 80 mg/L. The fractional dimension of the floc Df was calculated to be 1.70 in the best sedimentation rate.
A bench scale study was carried out in order to evaluate the applicability of dissolved air flotation (DAF) as an advanced treatment for effluents from three different domestic wastewater treatment processes, namely: (i) a tertiary activated sludge plant; (ii) an upflow sludge blanket anaerobic reactor (UASB); and (iii) a high-rate stabilization pond.
A technique based on laser light diffraction is shown to be successful in collecting on-line experimental data. Time series of floc size distributions (FSD) under different shear rates (G) and calcium additions were collected. The steady state mass mean diameter decreased with increasing shear rate G and increased when calcium additions exceeded 8 mg/l. A so-called population balance model (PBM) was used to describe the experimental data. This kind of model describes both aggregation and breakage through birth and death terms. A discretised PBM was used since analytical solutions of the integro-partial differential equations are non-existing. Despite the complexity of the model, only 2 parameters need to be estimated; the aggregation rate and the breakage rate. The model seems, however, to lack flexibility. Also, the description of the floc size distribution (FSD) in time is not accurate.

The electrokinetic characteristics and coagulation behaviors of polyaluminum silicate chloride (PASiC) and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) were studied and compared by streaming current (SC) measurement and jar test method. The experimental results showed that the interaction between polysilicic acid characterized negative charge and hydrolyzed aluminum species result in a decrease of the charge-neutralizing ability of PASiC, compared to PAC. The decrease has a close relationship with the basicity (B) and Al/Si molar ratio in PASiC. The less the B value and the Al/Si molar ratio, the lower the charge-neutralizing ability of PASiC is. In contrast, the preparation technique for PASiC affects the charge - neutralization of PASiC to a smaller extent. In addition, compared with PAC, PASiC may enhance aggregating efficiency and give better coagulating effects.
