Intracellular impulse conduction in muscle cells.

A hypothesis, suggested previously by morphological studies, for impulse conduction from the sarcolemma to the contractile material via the sarcoplasmic reticulum is discussed. The relation of reticulum morphology and cell size to speed of contraction in smooth and striated muscle agrees with the hypothesis and thus supports it. Additional support comes from evidence concerning an unusual morphological relationship between the sarcolemma and contractile fibrils in striated muscle of amphioxus.

Effects of temperature and anions on titration curves of frog muscle.

Titration curves of frog muscle at 2 degrees C and 25 degrees C were determined in vivo. Lowered temperature decreases respiration without change of colloidal charge or of ion distribution as estimated from charge. Anions which are inhibitors or metabolites combine with muscle colloids, changing the distribution of other ainions and cations.

Impairment of muscle stretch reflexes in tick paralysis.

Experiments with tick-paralyzed dogs and woodchucks have shown impairment of stretch reflexes in addition to partial paralysis at the neuromuscular junction. Stretch reflexes disappear very early during paralysis, whereas nociceptive reflexes do not appear to be directly affected. The early incoordination and the ascending nature of the paralysis may be related to impairment of stretch reflex pathways.

Mechanism of fibrillation potentials in denervated mammalian skeletal muscle.

This report concerns the origin and mechanism of fibrillation potentials. It is proposed that these potentials do not necessarily arise from degenerated endplate organs. The precursor is the rhythmic oscillations of the membrane potential. This mechanism may also occur in the case of epileptic discharges from epileptic cells in the cerebral cortex.

Fatigue in phasic and tonic fibers of frog muscle.

Single isolated phasic muscle fibers and small bundles of tonic fibers were directly stimulated in one-per-second twitch series by massive electrode shocks. During the stimulation period the isometric tension developed by the phasic fiber continuously decreased, first rapidly and then slowly. The tonic fibers behaved similarly, but showed much less fatigue than the phasic ones. In general, recovery of the fibers after cessation of stimulation also occurred in two phases.
