Where are we today?

In February 1991, I posted 388 anonymous questionnaires to NHS operating departments. Two hundred and forty-two departments completed and returned them--which represented a 62.3% return.

What's happened to aseptic discipline in the OR?

Aseptic discipline is the sum of the constraining factors governing the human behavioristic interface between the surgical environment and the surgical patient. Although certain details of the discipline may change with advances in immunology, pharmacology, surgical techniques, instrumentation, and other elements in the surgical environment, the basic principles of aseptic discipline must prevail and be enforced. Surgical professionals enter into an unwritten covenant to keep an unspoken promise to discharge their unseen duties in the aseptic chain of events, with only their own consciences to monitor their responsibility to the patient. The discussion of aseptic discipline is divided into its application to the five D's of infection control: discipline, defense mechanisms, drugs, devices, and design of the environment.

The other side of the phone. Sales representatives in the OR.

21. There are certain expectations that salespersons need to be aware of to have continued business, quality time, and an invitation to return to the surgery department. 2. It is important to know that even competitive institutions have their channels of communication open about products, equipment, and dependability of the sales representatives. 3. Not all companies offer appropriate training to prepare their sales representatives for the operating room. 4. Sales representatives need to remember that admission to the operating room is a privilege, not a right, and privileges can be revoked.

Designing a state-of-the-art operating room complex.

1. When designing a new operating room complex, it is important to remember that, with a life expectancy of 15 years or more, you must take into account not only your current needs, but also anticipate those of the future. 2. The OR facility needs to be designed both for patients and providers: provide private, comfortable surroundings for your patients that are efficient and conducive to developing an enjoyable work environment for your staff. 3. Be sure to solicit input from various department managers as well as physicians during the initial design phases so that all needs may be met. In addition, ensure that state guidelines are satisfied.

[Basic structure and function of the operating room committee].

The complicated task of the operating room management is facilitated and supported by an OR multiprofessional committee. The purpose and the task of the OR committee is the effective functioning of the area for the safety surgical treatment of patients. Among the managerial responsibilities of this committee is the development of an organizational policy with the purpose: 1) to safeguard patients and personnel and 2) to face common problems arising in every day practice.
