Ataxia telangiestasia mutated protein (ATM) is the major kinase that initiates the DNA damage signal transduction response following exposure to ionising radiation (IR) in mammalian cells. DNA non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) is the most significant double strand break (DSB) repair pathway in mammalian cells. ATM-defective cell lines display cell cycle checkpoint defects and show pronounced radiosensitivity. ATM signalling was previously thought to be dispensable for NHEJ. This review discusses recent findings that ATM activates an end-processing mechanism dependent upon Artemis, a nuclease that also functions to cleave the hairpin intermediate generated during V(D)J recombination. ATM/Artemis-dependent end-processing is required for the repair of a sub-fraction (approximately 10%) of DSBs induced by IR and makes a significant contribution to survival following exposure to ionising radiation. This result represents a new role for ATM and demonstrates a novel cross communication between the DNA repair and signal transduction machinery.

We describe a technique for repositioning and transscleral fixation of a dislocated plate-haptic foldable collamer posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL). The displaced IOL was positioned in the anterior chamber, and a double-armed suture on a curved needle was fixed to the sclera at 10:30 o'clock. The needle then entered the globe and passed through the superior haptic eyelet of the IOL. Both were withdrawn through the scleral wound on the opposite side. The inferior haptic was fixed at 4:30 and 7:30 o'clock and provided the mirror reflection of the suture path of the upper fixed haptic. This technique may be a useful alternative to lens removal or exchange.

The enteric pathogen Salmonella employs type III secretion systems to transport a cocktail of effector proteins directly into its host cell. These effectors act in concert to control a variety of host cell processes to successfully invade intestinal cells and to establish an intracellular, replication-permissive niche. Recent studies reveal new insights into the molecular mechanisms that underlie effector protein injection, host cell invasion, and manipulation of vesicle trafficking induced by the interplay between multiple effectors and host systems. These findings corroborate the importance of spatio-temporal regulation of effector protein function for fine-tuned modulation of the host cell machinery.
A method of heart retraction during coronary artery bypass operations is described. The technique improves exposure of the coronary arteries, especially of the circumflex and posterior descending coronary branches during grafting. In addition, it is simple, safe, and inexpensive. Furthermore, this technique can be applied for off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.
CSP function is vital to synaptic transmission, however; the precise nature of its role remains controversial. Conflicting reports support either a role for CSP: (i) in exocytosis or (ii) in the regulation of transmembrane calcium fluxes. Here we have examined the self-association of CSP to form oligomers that are stable upon SDS-PAGE. To understand the structural requirements for CSP self-association a series of CSP deletion mutants were constructed, expressed, and purified. This analysis revealed an interesting pattern of oligomerization. Amino acids between 83 and 136 were observed to be important for self-association. The recombinant CSP oligomers as well as the CSP monomers directly associate with Ni(2+)-NTA agarose. Thus CSP-CSP interactions may be an important consideration for current working models of CSP chaperone activity at the synapse.
We report a case of severe left visual neglect consequent upon extensive infarction in the territory of the right middle cerebral artery. A detailed analysis is given of the patient's performance on line bisection. The stimuli cover a wider range of lengths than is usually employed in such studies (11'' to 1''). The magnitude of the patient's rightward displacement of his transections is linearly related to the length of the stimulus line, such that the longer the line, the greater the left 'neglect'. At line length 2'', the patient's transections are relatively accurate, and at length 1'', the transections cross the objective midpoint to give a reliable left displacement (= 'right neglect'). On some occasions, these latter transections are placed beyond the leftmost point of the stimulus line. We interpret the data in terms of two constructs: (a) an 'attentional boundary' placed slightly to the left of the objective midline; (b) 'representational completion' that extends to the attentional boundary.

Given a text of length n, a pattern of length m and an integer k, we present an algorithm for finding all occurrences of the pattern in the text, each with at most k substitutions. The algorithm runs in O(k(m log m + n)) time, and requires O(nk) space. This algorithm has direct implications for nucleotide and amino acid sequence comparisons.
