Nonanalytic microscopic phase transitions and temperature oscillations in the microcanonical ensemble: an exactly solvable one-dimensional model for evaporation.

We calculate exactly both the microcanonical and canonical thermodynamic functions (TDFs) for a one-dimensional model system with piecewise constant Lennard-Jones type pair interactions. In the case of an isolated N-particle system, the microcanonical TDFs exhibit (N - 1) singular (nonanalytic) microscopic phase transitions of the formal order N/2, separating N energetically different evaporation (dissociation) states. In a suitably designed evaporation experiment, these types of phase transitions should manifest themselves in the form of pressure and temperature oscillations, indicating cooling by evaporation. In the presence of a heat bath (thermostat), such oscillations are absent, but the canonical heat capacity shows a characteristic peak, indicating the temperature-induced dissociation of the one-dimensional chain. The distribution of complex zeros of the canonical partition may be used to identify different degrees of dissociation in the canonical ensemble.

Entanglement of atomic ensembles by trapping correlated photon states

We describe a general technique that allows for an ideal transfer of quantum correlations between light fields and metastable states of matter. The technique is based on trapping quantum states of photons in coherently driven atomic media, in which the group velocity is adiabatically reduced to zero. We discuss possible applications such as quantum state memories, generation of squeezed atomic states, preparation of entangled atomic ensembles, quantum information processing, and quantum networking.

Wave function structure in two-body random matrix ensembles

We study the structure of eigenstates in two-body interaction random matrix ensembles and find significant deviations from random matrix theory expectations. The deviations are most prominent in the tails of the spectral density and indicate localization of the eigenstates in Fock space. Using ideas related to scar theory we derive an analytical formula that relates fluctuations in wave function intensities to fluctuations of the two-body interaction matrix elements. Numerical results for many-body fermion systems agree well with the theoretical predictions.

Nonadiabatic noncyclic geometric phase and ensemble average spectrum of conductance in disordered mesoscopic rings with spin-orbit coupling

We generalize Yang's theory from the U(1) gauge field to the non-Abelian U(1)xSU(2)(spin) gauge field. Based on this generalization and taking into account the geometric Pancharatnam phase as well as an effective Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase in nonadiabatic noncyclic transport, we calculate the ensemble average Fourier spectrum of the conductance in disordered mesoscopic rings connected to two leads. Our theory can explain the experimental results reported by Morpurgo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1050 (1998)] more satisfactorily. We indicate that the observed splitting stems from the nonadiabatic noncyclic Pancharatnam phase and the effective AB phase, both being dependent on spin-orbit coupling.

Generating ensemble averages for small proteins from extended conformations by Monte Carlo simulations.

Since it is not feasible to determine the structure of every protein by experiment, algorithms delivering the folded conformation of a protein solely from its amino acid sequence are desirable. Here the diffusion-process controlled-Monte Carlo approach has been applied to generating ensemble averages for three small proteins with 31, 36, and 46 residues. Starting from extended conformations and using an energy model that was developed on other protein models, the simulations find nativelike structures deviating by 3 A rms from the experimental structures for the main chain atoms. The balance between long-range and short-range interactions is discussed briefly in the context of stability and folding.

Two-body random ensembles: from nuclear spectra to random polynomials

The two-body random ensemble for a many-body bosonic theory is mapped to a problem of random polynomials on the unit interval. In this way one can understand the predominance of 0(+) ground states, and analytic expressions can be derived for distributions of lowest eigenvalues, energy gaps, density of states, and so forth. Recently studied nuclear spectroscopic properties are addressed.

Quantum communication between atomic ensembles using coherent light.

Protocols for quantum communication between massive particles, such as atoms, are usually based on making use of nonclassical light, and/or superhigh finesse optical cavities are normally needed to enhance interaction between atoms and photons. We demonstrate a remarkable result: by using only coherent light, entanglement can be generated between distant free space atomic ensembles, and an unknown quantum state can thus be teleported from one to another. Neither nonclassical light nor cavities are needed in the scheme, which greatly simplifies its experimental implementation.

Nonequilibrium model for the contact process in an ensemble of constant particle number.

We introduce and analyze numerically a nonequilibrium model with a conserved dynamics which is a realization of the contact process in an ensemble of constant particle number. The model possesses just one process in which particles jump around landing only on empty sites next to an existing particle. Particles are not allowed to land on a vacant site surrounded by empty sites. In contrast with the ordinary contact process, the present model does not have an absorbing state. In spite of lacking an absorbing state, the model displays properties that, in the thermodynamic limit, are identical to those of the ordinary contact process.

Nonuniversal behavior of the k-body embedded Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices.

Using a novel approach, we investigate the shape of the average spectrum and the spectral fluctuations of the k-body embedded unitary ensemble in the limit of a large matrix dimension. We identify the transition point between a semicircle and a Gaussian shape. The transition also affects the spectral fluctuations which deviate from the Wigner-Dyson form and become Poissonian in the limit k<<m<<l. Here m is the number of fermions and l the number of degenerate single-particle states.

Dipole blockade and quantum information processing in mesoscopic atomic ensembles.

We describe a technique for manipulating quantum information stored in collective states of mesoscopic ensembles. Quantum processing is accomplished by optical excitation into states with strong dipole-dipole interactions. The resulting "dipole blockade" can be used to inhibit transitions into all but singly excited collective states. This can be employed for a controlled generation of collective atomic spin states as well as nonclassical photonic states and for scalable quantum logic gates. An example involving a cold Rydberg gas is analyzed.

Anomalously large critical regions in power-law random matrix ensembles.

We investigate numerically the power-law random matrix ensembles. Wave functions are fractal up to a characteristic length whose logarithm diverges asymmetrically with different exponents, 1 in the localized phase and 0.5 in the extended phase. The characteristic length is so anomalously large that for macroscopic samples there exists a finite critical region, in which this length is larger than the system size. The Green's functions decrease with distance as a power law with an exponent related to the correlation dimension.

Local realistic model for the dynamics of bulk-ensemble NMR information processing.

We construct a local realistic hidden-variable model that describes the states and dynamics of bulk-ensemble NMR information processing up to about 12 nuclear spins. The existence of such a model rules out violation of any Bell inequality, temporal or otherwise, in present high-temperature, liquid-state NMR experiments. The model does not provide an efficient description in that the number of hidden variables grows exponentially with the number of nuclear spins.

Dynamics of two overlapping spin ensembles interacting by spin exchange.

We describe linear and nonlinear dynamics of spin-polarized K and 3He ensembles interacting by spin exchange. The interactions are dominated by the imaginary part of the spin-exchange cross section and each spin species is primarily affected by the average magnetization of the other. Operating in a very low magnetic field we demonstrate novel dynamics when the electron and nuclear spin precession frequencies are nearly matched. We observe transverse damping as well as a dynamic instability of the 3He spins interacting with polarized K vapor. We also demonstrate operation as a self-compensating comagnetometer, useful for tests of CPT violation and other precision measurements.

Detection and manipulation of statistical polarization in small spin ensembles.

We report the detection of the square root of N statistical polarization in a small ensemble of electron spin centers in SiO2 by magnetic resonance force microscopy. A novel detection technique was employed that captures the statistical polarization and cycles it between states that are either locked or antilocked to the effective field in the rotating frame. Using field gradients as high as 5 G/nm, we achieved a detection sensitivity equivalent to roughly two electron spins, and observed ultralong spin-lock lifetimes, as long as 20 s. Given a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio, this scheme should be extendable to single electron spin detection.

Dynamics of an ensemble of noisy bistable elements with global time delayed coupling.

The dynamics of an ensemble of bistable elements with global time-delayed coupling under the influence of noise is studied analytically and numerically. Depending on the noise level, the system undergoes ordering transitions and demonstrates multistability. That is, for a strong enough positive feedback it exhibits a nonzero stationary mean-field,and a variety of stable oscillatory mean-field states are accessible for positive and negative feedback. The regularity of the oscillatory states is maximal for a certain noise level; i.e., the system demonstrates coherence resonance. While away from the transition points the system dynamics is well described by a Gaussian approximation, near the bifurcation points a description in terms of a dichotomous theory is more adequate.

Nonsymmetric entanglement of atomic ensembles.

The entanglement of multiatom quantum states is considered. In order to cancel noise due to inhomogeneous light-atom coupling, the concept of matched multiatom observables is proposed. As a means to eliminate an important form of decoherence this idea should be of broad relevance for quantum information processing with atomic ensembles. The general approach is illustrated on the example of rotation angle measurement, and it is shown that the multiatom states that were thought to be only weakly entangled can exhibit near-maximum entanglement.

Force network ensemble: a new approach to static granular matter.

An ensemble approach for force distributions in static granular packings is developed. This framework is based on the separation of packing and force scales, together with an a priori flat measure in the force phase space under the constraints that the contact forces are repulsive and balance on every particle. We show how the formalism yields realistic results, both for disordered and regular triangular "snooker ball" configurations, and obtain a shear-induced unjamming transition of the type proposed recently for athermal media.

Controlling synchronization in an ensemble of globally coupled oscillators.

We propose a technique to control coherent collective oscillations in ensembles of globally coupled units (self-sustained oscillators or maps). We demonstrate numerically and theoretically that a time delayed feedback in the mean field can, depending on the parameters, enhance or suppress the self-synchronization in the population. We discuss possible applications of the technique.
