We tested the effects of vitamin A supplementation on the antibody titre of 40 healthy volunteers (age range: 10-35 years), who had received a complete course of antirabies vaccine (5 injections over 30 days). After determining the baseline serum vitamin A status of 80 volunteers, 20 pairs were matched for serum vitamin A level, body mass index, age, sex and socioeconomic status. One person from each pair was randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. The experimental group received vitamin A and antirabies vaccine. Controls received only the vaccine. The experimental group had significantly greater (2.1 times) serum antirabies titre than controls. This finding is an important step towards improving the economy of dosage of antirabies vaccines.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical diagnosis and treatment of hepatic hydatid disease and its epidemiological characteristics in Yili river valley. METHODS: Retrospective investigation was carried out on 2049 cases collected in 1993-2003. Clinical diagnosis was made by ways of intradermal test, serological test, ultrasound, X-ray, CT and/or MRI, majority of them received surgical operation. RESULTS: Among the 2049 cases, cystic hydatidosis occupied 96% (1965/2049), while 4% (84/2049) were alveolar hydatidosis. 99% (2034/2049) accepted surgery including hepatolobectomy, endocystomy and hydatidostomy in 302 cases (14.7%) without relapses. 754 cases (36.7%) received chemotherapy (praziquantel, albendazole) after surgical operation. The disease distributed in agri-pastoral areas along the valley. Local residents from different minorities had a close contact with dogs, 54% of the cases were females and 48% of the cases were in the group of 25-49 years old. The incidence tends to decline in the years. CONCLUSION: Hydatidosis is still an important health problem in the region. Further practices for improving treatment especially surgical intervention and for epidemiological investigation are needed.

From November 2001 to March 2002, the National Institute of Health, Islamabad, Pakistan, received 230 samples from 194 different sources for analysis for anthrax spores. These samples were taken from letters/packages suspected of containing anthrax and from individuals exposed to them. When cultured on sheep blood agar, 141 samples yielded growth suggestive of Bacillus species. On the basis of growth characteristics, absence of beta-haemolysis, absent or doubtful motility and morphological characters of the isolates on Gram stain, 62 isolates were considered suspicious and were inoculated into guinea-pigs. Inoculated animals remained healthy well beyond the required observation period of 5 days. All the samples were therefore reported as negative for B. anthracis. Systems for handling and analysing suspected anthrax-contaminated materials are discussed.
Based on the conceptions of the relationship between energy and adaptation-immunological systems a number of hormone-metabolic indices were compared with immune reactivity as evidenced by skin tests and rosette-formation reaction. It is shown that lowering of immunological indices in oncological patients is associated with a decreased sensitivity of dexametasone suppression of cortisol, an increased concentration of 11-oxycorticosteroids in blood, a higher level of triglycerides, cholestrol, beta-lipoproteins and less glucose tolerance. The use of phenformin during 3 months in patients with atherosclerosis resulted in a considerable increase of the index of phytohemagglutinin stimulated blasttransformation of lymphocytes and rosette-formation reaction. This effect was associated with normalization of lipid metabolism indices.
In serum of some healthy women and patients with fibroadenomatosis of the mammary gland antibodies to the cell membranes of adipocytes were detected. Interconnections between these antibodies and corresponding antigens in blood, on the one hand, and hormonal-metabolic status of probands, on the other hand, were observed. Possible autoimmune origin of phenomenon detected and its relation to the normal and pathological processes in adipose tissue are discussed.

The synthesis and properties of N6-monobutyryl adenosine 5'-monophosphate are described. The properties of synthesized monobutyryl nucleotide have been compared to those of a metabolite recognized in previous studies (Castagna, M. C., Palmer, W.K., and Walsh, D.A. (1977) Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 181, 46-60) as the major radioactive product produced in the liver upon perfusion with N6,O2'-dibutyryl cyclic [3H]adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate. By the criteria of cochromatography on DEAE-cellulose and in three thin layer chromatographic systems and from equivalent rates of alkaline hydrolysis, N6-monobutyryl adenosine 5'-monophosphate has been identified as a major hepatic metabolite of N6,O2'-dibutyryl cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate.

Conversion of androgens (aromatization) to estrogens in lymphocytes of cancer patients and healthy subjects in vitro was discovered. Aromatase activity in lymphocytes was comparable to that of fat and breast tumor tissues. It was completely suppressed in one out of two breast cancer patients receiving orimeten (aminoglutethimide). The activity in large bowel cancer was lower than in adenoma patients; however, the two groups were not balanced for age.
Elevated blood prolactin level was identified in 80% of untreated patients with advanced (stage II-IV) cervical cancer whereas it was normal at the earlier (preinvasive) stage. Patients with stage I-A, II tumors revealed either increased or normal blood prolactin level. Patients with advanced cancer who had undergone irradiation and surgery, either alone or in combination, showed hyperprolactinemia as often as 94% of the time. Studies on pathogenesis of hyperprolactinemia and its role in tumor progression are currently conducted by the authors.

According to the recent conceptions the ecological harmful factors are the main causes producing the cancer appearance, especially of the age-dependent elevation of its incidence. It is known that the key element of cancer prevention is a decrease or removal of exogenous carcinogens. Such a way can lead to the decrease of the cancer incidence in the young and middle aged persons and to the increase of the cancer frequency in the old age, i.e. to the increase of the cancer incidence in population on the whole, because metabolic conditions promoting the cancer appearance in an organism regularly appear in the process of aging. These conditions arise as a by-product of the organism developmental programme. New approaches to the cancer prevention are considered as based on principles of the ontogenetic prevention.
