[Electrocoagulation in the surgery of inguinal hernias].

One hundred and sixty patients with inguinal hernias were operated with pure tissue repair method (35 of them with radioscalpel) and 38 patients -- with no-tension plastic operation on the inguinal canal (19 of them with radioscalpel). There were no cases of bleeding, haematoma, seroma and wound infection when radioscalpel Surgitron was used. Herniotomy with Surgitron provides good short- and long-term results.

[Electrocoagulation of the paraurethral glands (Reiser's operation) in women with urethro-cystalgia].

One hundred nineteen cases of women with chronic urethrocystalgia were reviewed. The symptoms were dominated by urethral burning (83%) and pollakiuria (75%). Electrosection of the paraurethral glands according to Rieser's technique and resection of the urethral floor (100% of cases) were combined with hymeneoplasty in 9% of cases. The results concern 67 women with a mean follow-up of 6 years: cure: 36%; marked improvement: 34%; no change: 30%. The authors discuss the presence of paraurethral glands, their role in the urethrocystalgia syndrome and the place of Rieser's operation in their treatment.

The influence of electrocoagulation of the septum and section of the entorhinal cortex on general behaviour and memory in cats.

In chronic experiments on cats it was shown that the lesion of the medial part of the septum does not result in the "septal syndrome"; the ratio of the different sleep-wakefulness cycle phases remains within the baseline values; the acquisition, retrieval and extinction of instrumental alimentary conditioned reflexes proceed normally; the delayed conditioned reflexes are impaired. Massive septal lesion, including its lateral part, leads to the development of the "septal syndrome"; there are changes in the structure and percentage of the different sleep-wakefulness cycle phases; the acquisition and extinction of instrumental alimentary reflexes with the sound discrimination are markedly retarded; the performance of delayed conditioned reflexes is completely destroyed. The section of the entorhinal cortex produces an increase in the number of repeated errors and perseverative movements during performance of instrumental alimentary reflexes, the deceleration of the acquisition and extinction of instrumental alimentary reflexes, complete disturbance of the delayed conditioned reflexes and does not affect the sleep-wakefulness cycle. The problems of the role of the hippocampus and its main inputs in the regulation of the short-term operative memory in the "pure form" as well as the significance of the descending influence of the hippocampus on the regulation of general animal behavior were also discussed.

Electrocoagulation of the endometrium with the ball-end resectoscope.

Thermal destruction of the endometrium for treatment of dysfunctional uterine bleeding was accomplished with a urologic resectoscope with ball-end electrode in 15 patients. After at least 6 months of follow-up, ten experienced amenorrhea and four hypomenorrhea. One failure occurred; the patient underwent vaginal hysterectomy 4 months after the procedure and was found to have adenomyosis.
