Early clinico-experimental findings with real-time B-mode Echography of the odontological district are reported. On the basis of previous in vitro application references and using a unidimensional A-Mode technique, preliminary data of in vivo ultrasound semeiotics regarding the tooth and its periodontal structures are outlined experimentally. Although current "in vivo" experience relates exclusively to front central and para-central teeth, it can be hypothesised that further technical and methodological developments of echographic instruments may permit systematic employment of ultrasound diagnosis in the odontological sector.
Reproducibility of Leishmania braziliensis s.l. metastatic behavior in hamsters was studied for 9 isolates of L.b. panamensis and 2 of L.b. guyanensis with a previous record of metastasis. Also, the influence of corticosteroids and trauma was evaluated. In the corticosteroid-treated group, metastases appeared earlier than in the nontreated group, and localization at the site of trauma was more frequent (4/9) than in the nontreated hamsters (1/5). Nine of the 11 strains (82%) were capable of reproducing metastatic behavior. Studies on dissemination of L. b. panamensis showed that the regional lymph node is invaded as soon as 5 days postinfection, with further nonhematic dissemination to other tissues and organs in less than 4 wk.
Immunosuppressor activity of considerable potency and complexity was generated during the course of chronic, progressive infection of C3H/Anf mice by Mycobacterium lepraemurium. From the 5th through 10th week after inoculation, spleen cells from infected mice mildly but reproducibly suppressed the direct plaque-forming cell response of normal spleen cell cultures to sheep erythrocytes. Suppression at this stage of infection was mediated by cells with macrophage-like characteristics. A marked increase in splenic suppressor activity at 10 to 11 weeks was associated with the appearance of a second suppressor cell subpopulation composed of T lymphocytes. The appearance of these cells was closely related in time to the onset of rapid splenic enlargement and a loss of cutaneous delayed type hypersensitivity to antigens of M. lepraemurium in mice at 10 to 11 weeks of infection. Suppressor cells were not present in peripheral lymph nodes until terminal infection at 22 to 25 weeks. Suppressor spleen cells depressed the T-dependent antibody response most severely, but there was also a direct effect upon B cells as shown by moderate suppression of responses to TNP-LPS and DNP-Ficoll. Spleen cells from 14-week-infected mice generated a soluble suppressor factor(s) that induces depression of moderate severity, however, the immunosuppression by intact cells was far greater.

We report the first experimental study of the dynamics of in vitro evolution of DNA. Starting from a random pool of DNA sequences, we used cycles of selection (binding to the lac repressor protein), amplification, and mutations to evolve to a unique DNA sequence, the lac operator. Statistical analysis of the DNA sequences obtained during the cycles of evolution shows that the DNA bases are selected at different rates. The rates of selection provide a quantitative measure of the interaction of the DNA bases with the protein during the complex formation. A model reproduces the evolution dynamics of the DNA population but cannot give the fine structure of the DNA-protein interaction.
Courtship song serves as a sexual signal and may contribute to reproductive isolation between closely related species. Using lines of Drosophila pseudoobscura experimentally selected under different sexual selection regimes, we tested whether increased promiscuity and enforced monogamy led to evolutionary changes in courtship song elements. In D. pseudoobscura, males produce both a low and high rate repetition song. We found that both song types diverged after selection and that the direction of changes was consistent with ordered hypotheses of predicted directions of change under the different mating system structures. In particular, latency to the initiation of song and duration of the interpulse interval (IPI) decreased in highly promiscuous lines and increased in monogamous lines. These results suggest that courtship song may rapidly evolve under different mating system structures, representing either functional evolution of more stimulatory song under conditions of strong sexual selection, or might result from increased courtship vigor, or represent correlated evolution. Some speciation theory predicts that increased sexual selection should result in increased variance of traits between allopatric populations, facilitating reproductive isolation. We also found that courtship song elements were not equally variable between replicate lines.
