Rabbits were sensitised with complete bovine corneal epithelium. The lymphocyte stimulation test was performed with the lymphocytes of these rabbits using the soluble and sonicated insoluble fraction of the corneal epithelium as the antigens. A striking difference existed in the optimal test conditions for these antigen fractions. By comparing the results of the lymphocyte stimulation test with other immunological parameters, namely, skin test reaction, antibody titre, and phytohaemagglutinin stimulation of the lymphocytes, we concluded that both antigen fractions stimulate predominantly the T-lymphocyte system, although boosting augmented the humoral immune response. Stimulation of the cultured lymphocytes by both the separate and mixed antigen fractions is evidence for the existence of crossreacting antigens between the soluble and insoluble epithelial fractions.

Swiss-Webster mice were vaccinated by the intraperitoneal route (i.p.) with Mycobacterium tuberculosis BCG and challenged i.p. 4-10 weeks later with 10(4) virulent Salmonella typhimurium in the presence or absence of purified derivative (PPD) of tuberculin. Normal control mice were similarly challenged. Such an infection was fatal to the normal mice within 12 days. BCG vaccination prolonged the survival time and protected about 36% of the salmonella-infected mice from death. In contrast, tuberculin sensitivity, elicited in the BCG-vaccinated mice, significantly increased the survival time and protected about 70% of the mice against an otherwise fatal challenge. When these experiments were repeated using an infective dose of 10(6) organisms, the protective effect of the tuberculin reaction became substantially reduced, but there remained a statistically significant improvement in the survival distribution of the challenged mice as compared with that among the BCG-vaccinated mice. The examination of peritoneal washings obtained from BCG-vaccinated mice stimulated with PPD showed that the enhanced resistance to salmonella infection was directly associated with a quantitatively increased influx of phagocytic leukocytes accumulating at the site of infection as a result of the elicitation of tuberculin sensitivity.

Abdominal irradiation may produce eosinophilia. The relationship between radiation-related eosinophilia (RRE), reactivity to 2-4 dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), lymphocyte count, and prognosis was evaluated in 98 patients irradiated for tumors below the diaphragm. Forty-two per cent manifested RRE and 62% reacted to DNCB. Fifteen of 19 (79%) reactors who had RRE were disease-free at 6 months. Fourteen of 22 (64%) nonreactors who had RRE and 26 of 42 (62%) DNCB reactors without RRE were controlled. Fourteen of 15 (93%) nonreactors without RRE had disease at 6 months. Those who had RRE had double the median survival of those who did not.

Growth of an allo-transplantable tumor, sarcoma-180, was suppressed in ICR mice immunized with mitomycin C-treated tumor cells in Hanks' solution or heat-killed tumor cells mixed with complete Freund's adjuvant 7 days before subcutaneous inoculation of tumor cells. In those mice, cytotoxic lymphocytes were not detected in spleen, lymph node or peritoneal exudate cells before or after tumor inoculation. The activities of antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) and complement-dependent cytotoxicity were not found in sera. Cytostatic activity was detected in peritoneal glass-adherent cells, but not in glass-nonadherent cells. Such an activity was also conferred on normal peritoneal glass-adherent cells by incubation with the culture supernatant of lymph node cells from preimmune mice and tumor cells. Cytostatic macrophages mediated by lymphokine-producing lymphocytes may be at least one of the main effector mechanisms in resistance against such an allo-transplantable tumor line.
