A change was shown in the EEG power spectra of the sensorimotor, visual and auditory neocortical areas and the dorsal hippocampus, and corresponding coherence functions in the range of 14.6-110 c/s during an orienting reaction and the formation of a defensive conditioned reflex in rabbits. It was suggested that the rhythm of about 5 c/s appearing during formation of the conditioned reflex, serves for the functional integration of the brain structures which is specific for a certain functional state.

The paper deals with one of the trends in profound studies of lipid metabolism consisting in the search for interrelations between its components. The data of the corresponding blood tests show that the qualitative control of the lipid metabolism in tissues is possible.
A previously-described experimental model of bacterial osteomyelitis was used to investigate systematically the sequential radiographic and histopathological changes in the tibias of rabbits infected with either Staphylococcus aureus or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The radiographic changes induced by both organisms were progressive, increasing in severity from the first to the fourth week after infection. The severity and extent of radiographic changes, especially that of bond destruction, were significantly greater for tibias infected with S. aureus. Histopathologically, staphylococcal disease was a severe, rapidly progressive purulent infection which led to extensive destruction of marrow and cortical bone, formation of sequestra, and frequent extraosseous extension. Disease due to P. aeruginosa was more indolent and less destructive, leading to earlier healing and no extraosseous extension. The sequential radiographic and pathological changes observed with this experimental model closely resemble those described in man and suggest that this model may be useful for future investigations of pathogenesis and therapy.

At organization of the blinking reaction directed to a cessation of the motivational hunger dominant the spectral power of biopotentials of the frontal, sensorimotor cortical areas and the blinking cortical centres of both eyes, VMH and LH increases in the range of the delta- and theta-frequencies. Coherence (Coh) of electrical activity of the frontal and sensorimotor cortical areas increases, Coh between potentials of the swallowing cortical area and the blinking cortical zones corresponding to the trained and non-trained eyes is being asymmetrically reconstructed. Coh function of the electrical activity of the LH, VMH and potentials of different cortical areas changes uniformly. Coh of electrical activity of the VMH and LH, NIII and MPO increases in the whole analysed frequency range, Coh between potentials of the MPO and LPO, LPO and VMH increases in the delta- and decreases in the theta- and alpha-frequency ranges. It is suggested that in the process of preparation of the goal-directed reaction all the cerebral cortex areas and subcortical structures under study related to alimentary motivation and the blinking function are involved into the dominant constellation.
Spectral analysis of electrical activity showed that at the end of extinction of the alimentary conditioned responses, elaborated on the basis of the hunger dominant, the spectral density of electrical activity of the cortical centre of the goal-directed reaction (blinking) of the trained eye and that of the lateral preoptic area, lateral hypothalamus, and ventromedial hypothalamus raised in the delta-band. To the end of the extinction the coherence (Cog) of biopotentials of the cortical centres of blinking of both eyes and electrical activity of the ventro-medial hypothalamus and medial preoptic area was changed in different directions. After the extinction of the goal-directed reaction Cog between biopotentials of the lateral hypothalamus and the electrical activity of the frontal cortex raised in the delta-band and Cog between the activity of the lateral hypothalamus and that of the cortical centres of blinking of both eyes lowered. The level of excitation of the structures included in the dominant constellation was suggested to raise to the end of the extinction of the endogenous conditioned response.
The activity of vegetative reception, immunological reactivity, and glucocorticoid provision was studied in 196 patients with bronchial asthma who were admitted for operative treatment. The authors devised the principle of the stage-by-stage impairment of the activity of vegetative reception, immunological reactivity, and glucocorticoid provision during the formation of bronchial asthma and distinguished six types of neuroimmune interrelations. On the basis of these six types they suggest pathogenetically substantiated indications for various methods of surgical treatment of patients with bronchial asthma.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of blood pressure with the other major cardiovascular risk factors in a large population of back-cross to Lyon hypertensive (LH) rats. METHODS: Mean arterial pressure was recorded in male freely moving Lyon normotensive (LN), LH, F1 and backcross to LH rats aged 30 weeks. Plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, creatinine, urea, fibrinogen and haematocrit levels, and the insulin: glucose ratio were measured in 31-week-old rats and 24h albuminuria in 6-week-old rats. RESULTS: Adult LH rats exhibited a significant increase in plasma lipids, insulin, fibrinogen, creatinine, urea and haematocrit levels compared with LN rats. In young LH rats, at an age at which blood pressure is slightly increased, albuminuria was increased to a greater extent than expected from their blood pressure levels. In the adult back-cross to LH rats, only the plasma cholesterol level was associated with blood pressure. Moreover, the plasma cholesterol level was related to fibrinogen and haematocrit levels. Finally, in the same rats, albuminuria developed early in life was positively related to hypercholinesterolaemia measured later in life. CONCLUSION: Plasma cholesterol, fibrinogen, haematocrit levels and early albuminuria could act synergistically in the enhancement or the development, or both, of vascular and kidney damage in the LH rat. Most interestingly, the association between plasma cholesterol level and blood pressure indicates that, as in essential hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia is a major phenotype associated with hypertension in the LH rat.

The methods of cross-interval and crosscorrelation analysis were used to study interneuronal connections in cerebellar vermis in awake rabbit. Crosscorrelation, or spike-triggering method, complemented the analysis of cross-intervals which estimated the neuronal interaction comparing spike sequences as point processes. Among 16 neuronal pairs recorded intra- or extracellularly 10 pairs were considered as interconnected. Inhibitory interconnections dominated. The inhibitory neuronal interconnections were revealed in pairs with complex spikes. Neurons which constituted pairs with reciprocal excitatory-inhibitory interaction fired only simple spikes. The variability and plasticity of common inputs to Purkinje cells were seemingly lower than those of direct connections which probably transmitted the output signals of Purkinje cells.
Analysis of 79 Dacron interposition shunts performed at Emory University from 1971 to 1977 identified a number of preoperative characteristics that correlate with short-term and long-term morbidity. Initial hospital mortality was related to the degree of elevation of the bilirubin and serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), to the presence of encephalopathy and to the urgency of the shunt procedure. Cumulative survival correlated best with the preoperative SGOT and bilirubin values, but other variables, including the Child's classification, preoperative encephalopathy, serum albumin, and the age of the patient at the time of operation, also exhibited significant associations. The hospital mortality of 13% and cumulative mortality of 48% in this series are in substantial agreement with similar reports in the literature. This experience differs widely from that described by most authors, however, in two other important respects: 1) significant hepatic encephalopathy has been observed in 45% of these hospital survivors, and 2) almost one-quarter of these patients have experienced spontaneous shunt closure. Thus, major shunt related complications have occurred in 70% of the patients to date. This incidence of undesirable consequences raises a serious question concerning the continued use of the Dacron interposition shunt for elective portal decompression.
