The laboratory trials of a process to treat untanned leather waste to isolate valuable protein products are presented. In this comparative study, both thermal and enzymatic treatments of leather waste were performed. The enzymatic method utilizes commercially available alkaline protease at moderate temperatures and for short periods of time. The concentration of the enzyme was 500 units per gram of leather waste which makes the method cost-effective. Amino acid composition in the hydrolysate obtained by the enzyme hydrolysis of untanned leather waste is determined. Chemical and physical properties of protein powder products from untanned leather waste were evaluated by spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods and by use of electron microscope. The results of microbiological assays confirm that these products agree to food safety standards. This relatively simple treatment of untanned leather waste may provide a practical and economical solution to the disposal of potentially dangerous waste.
Radioactivity in nuclear power effluents is negligible compared to that in retained wastes to be disposed of as solids. Two basic waste categories are those for which shallow disposal is accepted and those for which more extreme isolation is desired. The latter includes "high level" wastes and others contaminated with radionuclides with the unusual combined properties of long radioactive half-life and high specific radiotoxicity. The favored method for extreme isolation is emplacement in a deep stable geologic formation. Necessary technologies for waste treatment and disposal are considered available. The present program to implement these technologies is discussed, including the waste management significance of current policy on spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. Recent difficulties with shallow disposal of waste are summarized.
A multi-stage model, operated with single elution, was used to investigate the effects of organic loadings on the attenuation of a model phenolic wastewater in domestic refuse. Although 100% dissimilation of influent phenol (2-5 mmol dm-3) was recorded at a dilution rate of 0.007 h-1, partial inhibition of both phenol degradation and species competing with methanogens for a common electron donor(s) was apparent at concentrations greater than or equal to 4 mmol dm-3. On extended perfusion with 8 mmol phenol dm-3, the progressive inhibition of phenol dissimilation was not obviated by nutrient supplementation. Simultaneous degradation of the catabolic intermediate, hexanoic acid, and elevated methane release rates suggested that the transformation of phenol to hexanoate was rate limiting.

The move from landfill-based to resource-based waste management systems requires a greater knowledge of the composition of municipal solid waste. This paper draws together the findings of municipal solid waste (MSW) compositional surveys undertaken in the United Kingdom. The results from recent surveys show a good agreement over the composition of household-collected waste, but less agreement over civic amenity site waste composition. There is insufficient data to allow comparisons of the commercial waste element of municipal waste or of the other components, and further work is necessary to produce more reliable estimates of the composition of these streams. The use of questionnaire surveys and analysis of the results suggests that the size and age profile of a household influence the generation of household-collected waste. Some research suggests that the waste container provided by the local authority and the socio-economic classification of a household also influence household-collected waste generation, but other studies failed to find this link. Further research is required to investigate this by surveying all of the waste disposal routes available to specific households.
The utilization of coal fly ash in the construction and non-construction areas has seen a rapid growth in the last decade. As production outweighs the utilization of fly ash, its disposal as a dilute or dense slurry is still practiced in coal fired power stations. In this review the surface chemistry of leaching coal fly ash is presented to highlight the role of mass transfer in providing resistance and consequently delayed leaching of elements, when fly ash is disposed or used for value addition.
Genesearch is a 10 year old research and development company of Australian scientists, specializing in microbiology and genetics. This research expertise has formed the basis of a number of microbial processes for waste treatment. In addition, a novel type of high yield fermenter for aerobic bacteria allows the economical production of high-potency bacterial preparations for waste treatment processes. A novel approach to the rapid biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls has been developed. Photochemical pretreatment partially dechlorinates the molecules, rendering them susceptible to complete and rapid digestion by wild-type soil bacteria. In the area of non-toxic waste, Genesearch has developed products for on-site treatment of, for example, grease-trap wastes and waste oil in ship bilges; and a large scale process for conversion of municipal grease wastes into protein-rich biomass. The prospects for novel biological waste treatment are improving, as public pressure grows, and as increasing government monitoring and penalties make inadequate waste disposal uneconomic.
Refuse originated from consulting rooms of medical doctors of five different specializations were disposed of for more than six months in a model landfill. Another variants of the same experiment consisted of a mixture, made from refuse as above with municipal refuse (1:10), and of municipal refuse alone. Using estimation of either CO2 and NH3 evolution before and after disposal, continuous temperature measurement, organic matter and moisture contents, the mineralization process in the disposed refuse was followed. In model landfill which was kept under aerobic conditions the results indicated a low rate of mineralization in refuse from medical consulting rooms. The mixture containing municipal refuse and refuse from medical consulting rooms showed mineralization rate similar to that of municipal refuse alone. If the model landfills were kept nearly anaerobic almost no mineralization occurred in all kind of refuse disposed of.
