High consanguinity rate in Hungarian gipsy communities.

Reproductive data of 1074 gipsy women between 13 and 52 years with one or more children were obtained by gipsy social workers through anonymous personal interview confirmed by available official documents. Socioeconomic status of five different gipsy communities studied is much lower than the Hungarian average. Their reproductive activity is also different, e.g., first births occur in much younger age. The high endogamy was proved by the gipsy origin of male partners in 90% of couples. The occurrence of first cousin couples was 16 times higher than that of the Hungarian population at large, however, its range was wide from 0% to 21% in different regions studied.

[Endogenous psychoses and consanguinity (among an isolated population)].

++Clinico-genealogical and structural-dynamic analyses were made of endogenous psychoses, paranoid in structure under conditions of their accumulation in an isolated population. Study of 3 generations (forefathers, parents, sibs) in 55 families has demonstrated a high level of psychic morbidity among them: schizophrenia (58.1%), epilepsy (24.3%), oligophrenia (8.3%). The combination of schizophrenia and epilepsy was established in 6.3% of cases. It is assumed that the familial forms of psychoses in isolates are inherited by the polygenous autosomal and recessive type.

[Immunogenetic examination of families with consanguineous marriages].

14 Uzbek cousin-marriage families have been immunologically examined. 13 persons have been identified, who are probably homozygous in HLA-D region (the results of the reaction in mixed lymphocyte culture). The members of cousin-marriage families, as compared to healthy Russian donors, had lower proliferative response to phytohemagglutinin and concanavalin A and decreased indexes of concanavalin A-induced suppression and natural killer activity against K562 targets (in children). At the same time natural killer activity in adults, T- and B-lymphocyte content and IgM, IgG and IgA levels are similar to the respective indexes in Russian donors.
