[Transcutaneous electrostimulation--method leading to a permeation system of electroanalgesia in oncological practice].

Analgetic transcutaneous electrostimulation with the newly-designed Soviet-made ELIMAN-101 installation was used for treatment of tumor-induced pain in 84 cases (as a component of general intraoperative anesthesia--in 29, for postoperative pain--54, for analgesia in cases of advanced tumor--in 11 patients). Intraoperative application of the said procedure resulted in a 2.4-fold decrease in phentanyl consumption. In early postoperative period, pain was relieved in 65.6% and alleviated in 34.5% of patients, the latter requiring non-narcotic drugs as an adjunct to electroanalgetic treatment. Transcutaneous electrostimulation offered an adequate means for management of chronic cancer pain. The procedure did not involve resistance development and ensured a nearly 6-fold decrease in opiates consumption.

[Characteristics of dyslipidemia in cancer patients].

Blood concentrations of total cholesterol, cholesterol of very high density lipoproteins (alpha-cholesterol), triglycerides, beta-lipoproteins and 11-hydroxycorticosteroids were studied in 560 patients with rectal, colon, lung, ovarian, breast and endometrial cancer as well as in 238 controls. Patients with breast and rectal cancer were examined before and repeatedly after operation (every 6-12 months within 4-5 years). The blood concentration of total cholesterol was found to be elevated in breast cancer patients and controls with fibroadenomatosis and decreased in females with ovarian cancer and males with lung cancer. The level of blood alpha-cholesterol was decreased in males with all tumor localizations under study and in females with ovarian and rectal cancer. The concentration of triglycerides was increased in women patients only. Three possible causes of dyslipidemia in cancer patients are discussed: its development before tumor manifestation, the effect of tumor on the metabolic status of the host and the role of emotional stress in the increase of triglycerides level in the blood of primary cancer patients.

[Hydrodynamic study of a centrifugal differential-contact extractor].

Centrifugal extractors of the differential-contact type are widely used all over the world in production of antibiotics. Lately, new extractors were developed by Hitachi (Japan). Model E is of a special interest. In the present study the values of the working zone of the Hitachi extractor, EP-02 Ultrex were determined by the pressure levels and the effect of the main parameters characterizing the apparatus hydrodynamic conditions on the minimum and maximum critical pressure was estimated. The results of the study provide wide variation of the hydrodynamic parameters in determination of the most rational extraction conditions.
