Muscle enzyme release does not predict muscle function impairment after triathlon.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine the effects of a long distance triathlon (4 km swim, 120 km bike-ride, and 30 km run) on the four-day kinetics of the biochemical markers of muscle damage, and whether they were quantitatively linked with muscle function impairment and soreness. METHODS EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Data were collected from 2 days before until 4 days after the completion of the race. PARTICIPANTS: Twelve triathletes performed the triathlon and five did not. MEASURES: Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), muscle soreness (DOMS) and total serum CK, CK-MB, LDH, AST and ALT activities were assessed. RESULTS: Significant changes after triathlon completion were found for all muscle damage indirect markers over time (p < 0.0001). MVC of the knee extensor and flexor muscles decreased over time (p < 0.05). There is disparity in the time point at which peak values where reached for DOMS, MVC and enzyme leakage. There is no correlation between serum enzyme leakage, DOMS and MVC impairment which occur after triathlon. CONCLUSIONS: Long distance triathlon race caused muscle damage, but extent, as well as muscle recovery cannot be evaluated by the magnitude of changes in serum enzyme activities. Muscle enzyme release cannot be used to predict the magnitude of the muscle function impairment caused by muscle damage.

Exercise-induced muscle damage: absence of adaptive effect after a single session of eccentric isokinetic heavy resistance exercise.

BACKGROUND: Unaccustomed eccentric exercise induces muscle damage. A single session of eccentric exercise can induce an "adaptive effect" protecting exercised muscles during several weeks. Our aim was to verify this phenomenon in isokinetic exercise. Tested hypothesis was: the progressive muscle rise in tension due to isokinetic eccentric actions would be insufficient to induce the adaptive effect. METHODS EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: prospective study. SETTING: general community. PARTICIPANTS: six healthy and moderately active (untrained) males (29.1 yr +/- 1.5 SEM). INTERVENTIONS: subjects performed two isokinetic eccentric exercises (EE1 and EE2) of the quadriceps femoris of both legs (120 degrees.s-1; 8 sets of 15 repetitions) separated by 4 weeks. MEASURES: type I serum myosin heavy chains (MHC) and creatine kinase concentrations (CK), and rate of perceived soreness (DOMS) were collected before each exercise and on days 1, 2, 4, 6 and 9. RESULTS: Both exercises induced significant (p < 0.01) increases in MHC and CK concentrations, and DOMS score. There was no significant difference between EE1 and EE2, at any measurement time for any parameter. Mean peak values (SEM) were respectively (EE1; EE2): MHC (microU.l-1): 308 (192); 285 (191). CK (U.l-1): 1217 (760); 1297 (1039). DOMS score: 2.67 (0.52); 2.33 (0.52). CONCLUSIONS: The first session of eccentric isokinetic exercise (EE1) had no adaptive effect against muscle damage when an identical session was performed 4 weeks later (EE2). Muscle adaptation could have resulted in increased work production (+10.2%; p < 0.05; from EE1 to EE2).

Discriminative stimulus effects of the optical isomers of 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA).

The isomers of 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) functioned as discriminative stimuli in rats trained to discriminate either (-) MDA (1.25mg/kg) or (+) MDA (1.25mg/kg) from saline. Dose- and time-response curves indicated that drug lever selection occurred at doses of at least 1.00mg/kg of (-) MDA and 0.75mg/kg of (+) MDA and that drug-appropriate responding for both isomers was maintained for at least 90min. Cross-substitution was observed between the MDA isomers; both (+) and (-) 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) also substituted completely for (+) and (-) MDA. The hallucinogens (+)-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and (+/-)-2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine (DOM), substituted for (-) MDA; neither mescaline nor (+) amphetamine or cocaine had (-) MDA-like effects. LSD also substituted for (+) MDA; DOM, mescaline, (+) amphetamine and cocaine failed to have (+) MDA-like effects. The (-) but not the (+) MDA cue was blocked by the 5-HT(2) antagonist pirenpirone; the dopamine (DA) antagonists SCH-23390 and (-) sulpiride had no effect on either the (-) or (+) MDA cues. When animals were trained to discriminate LSD (0.16mg/kg) or (+) amphetamine (1.0mg/kg) from saline, neither (-) MDA nor (+) MDA substituted completely. These results indicate that: (1) the stimulus effects of the isomers of MDA and MDMA are similar; (2) (-) MDA may be more hallucinogenic (or more accurately, LSD- or DOM-like) than (+) MDA; (3) neither (+) nor (-) MDA has potent amphetamine-like effects; and (4) the effects of (-) MDA may be more serotonergic than those of (+) MDA.

[Ultrafiltration of micropolluted water in combination with coagulation and PAC process].

The experiments of ultrafiltration of Huangpu River water with coagulation and powered activated carbon (PAC) combinations was evaluated. The results showed that coagulation and PAC pretreatment effectively remove dissolved organic matters (DOM), of which coagulation removes high molecular weight (MW) DOM and PAC removes low MW DOM. Coagulation and PAC are effective treatment for removing Trihalomethane Formation Potential (THMFP). In terms of low MW THMEP, coagulation removes poorly and PAC removes effectively. The results also showed that addition of coagulant and PAC reduce cake resistance greatly. At coagulant dosage 4 mg/L (as Al), cake resistance was minimized.

Influence of estrogen on markers of muscle tissue damage following eccentric exercise.

This study tested the hypothesis that estrogen levels of women influences the development of a muscle-tissue damage (creatine kinase, CK) marker and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) following eccentric exercise. Seventeen oral contraceptive (OC) users and ten eumenorrheic (EU) subjects completed a 30-min downhill running bout at approximately 60% VO2max. The OC completed the exercise during the mid-luteal phase (day 22.9 +/- 1.5; high estrogen) while the EU did their exercise in the mid-follicular phase (day 9.6 +/- 4.4; low estrogen) of the menstrual cycle, respectively. The CK activity and DOMS were assessed pre-exercise, immediately post-, 24, 48 and 72 h post-exercise. ANOVA results indicated that there was a significant increase in CK activity in response to the downhill run (p < 0.001), and the interaction of group x time was significantly different (p < 0.01). The OC group had lower CK at 72 h post-exercise than did the EU group. Pre-exercise estrogen levels correlated with the overall mean CK (r = -0.43, p < 0.05) and 72 h (r = -0.38, p < 0.05) responses, respectively. Exercise caused an increase in DOMS in both groups (p < 0.001); but, no significant interaction was observed. These findings suggest that elevated estrogen levels have a protective effect on muscle tissue following eccentric exercise. The mechanism of this protective effect is unclear but may be related to the anti-oxidant characteristics and membrane stability properties associated with estrogen and its derivatives.

[Hospital maternal mortality: causes and consistency between clinical and autopsy diagnosis at the Northeastern Medical Center of the IMSS, Mexico].

UNLABELLED: The aim was to study the causes of maternal mortality (MM) and the percent of concordance between the clinical diagnosis and the autopsy findings. METHODOLOGY: The autopsies of maternal death (1980-1999) from the Hospital de Especialidades, Centro Médico del Noreste, IMSS in Monterrey, México, were analyzed. The cases were classified in directly obstetric maternal mortality (DOM) and indirectly obstetric maternal mortality (IOM), the causes were studied and the percent of concordance between pre- and post-mortem diagnosis was determined. RESULTS: There were 124 deaths. Autopsy was performed in 61 (49.1%) women. In 55 cases the clinical file and the autopsy protocol were available. This was our sample for study. Sixty percent of the cases were DO. Causes of DOM were: specific hypertensive pregnancy disease (SHPD) (51.6%), sepsis (35.5%), hypovolemic shock (9.7%), anesthetic accidents (3%); causes of IOM were: sepsis (41.7%), malignancies (16.7%), hematological diseases (12.5%), cardiopathy and systemic arterial hypertension (12.5%), hepatic disorders (12.5%), and Superior Longitudinal Sinus thrombosis (4%). A 100% clinical-pathological concordance was observed in DOM cases, while only a 41.6% was found in IOM cases. In those cases of sepsis (IOM), the etiologic agents were identified only in 20% before death. CONCLUSIONS: The early detection and treatment of SHPD and the prevention of sepsis should decrease the MM. This study showed some weakness in the Health Services that should be improved.

Hormonal responses to a resistance exercise performed under the influence of delayed onset muscle soreness.

Hormonal responses to an unaccustomed knee-extension exercise (E1; 5 times 10 repetitions with 40% load of 1RM [1 repetition maximum] followed by 2 sets until exhaustion) were compared in 6 men with the corresponding responses to an identical exercise performed 2 days later under the influence of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) (E2). Both exercises were performed with a variable-resistance machine causing exhaustion with significantly fewer repetitions than a normal constant-resistance knee-extension device does. The E1 induced DOMS as expected, but the 1RM, the total work done, and the repetition number and frequency were not different in the 2 exercises. In the 2 sets to failure, the mean repetition number varied between 17 and 25. The exercise-induced norepinephrine, epinephrine, testosterone, cortisol (COR), and growth hormone (GH) increases were similar in the 2 exercises, although the overall level of COR and GH, including the preexercise concentrations, tended to decline in the second exercise. The results may thus suggest that the hormonal response to resistance exercise is not significantly altered when performed soon after an unaccustomed exercise bout leading to DOMS.

The influence of endurance exercise on delayed onset muscle soreness.

BACKGROUND: Despite several review articles supporting the existence of exercise induced analgesia, it is unclear whether exercise reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). The purpose of this investigation was to examine the influence of an acute bout of endurance exercise on delayed onset muscle pain. METHODS: DOMS was induced in the elbow flexors of the non-dominant arm using eccentric isotonic exercise with the intensity of the eccentric contractions based upon concentric strength. Forty-eight hours after the eccentric contractions participants were randomly assigned to a group that completed 20 min of endurance exercise at 80% of estimated maximum cardiorespiratory endurance (n=23) or a group that watched a 20 min emotionally neutral video (n=27). The dependent variables were pressure pain threshold, pain intensity during arm movement through active range of motion, a standardized pain rating that was determined from a magnitude matching procedure, and state anxiety. RESULTS: A significant decrease in pressure pain threshold and an increase in the standardized pain ratings after the DOMS procedure (p<0.05) indicated that muscle pain was successfully induced. These changes were components of significant quadratic trends for pressure threshold (p<0.05) and the standardized pain ratings (p<0.01). During the 2nd session a decrease in pain intensity approached significance (p=0.05) regardless of group assignment. However, no significant group by time interactions were detected for any of the pain measures or state anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: Cycle ergometer exercise was not found to alter delayed onset muscle pain.

Temporal Pattern of the Repeated Bout Effect of Eccentric Exercise on Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the temporal pattern of the repeated bout effect of eccentric exercise on perceived pain and muscular tenderness associated with delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). DESIGN AND SETTING: Subjects completed 2 identical eccentric exercise bouts separated by 6, 7, 8, or 9 weeks. The experiment was conducted in a biokinetics research laboratory. SUBJECTS: Sixteen male and 15 female untrained subjects (age = 24.59 +/- 4.42 years, height = 171.71 +/- 7.81 cm, weight = 73.00 +/- 11.20 kg). MEASUREMENTS: Two physiologic characteristics of DOMS were measured immediately before and 0, 24, 48, and 72 hours after each eccentric exercise bout. Perceived pain was measured using a visual analog scale (VAS), and muscular tenderness was measured using a punctate tenderness gauge (PTG). RESULTS: Two 4 x 2 x 5 (group x bout x time) analyses of variance with repeated measures on the bout and time factors were performed on the VAS and PTG data. Significant (P <.05) main effects were found for group, bout, and time for the VAS and the PTG data. No significant interactions were detected. Post hoc analysis revealed significantly less perceived pain for the 9-week group than the 8-week group. The 7-week group had significantly less and the 8-week group had significantly more muscular tenderness than any other group. Perceived pain and muscular tenderness were significantly less after exercise bout 2 than after exercise bout 1. All subjects had significantly less perceived pain and muscular tenderness pre-exercise than 0 and 24 hours after the eccentric exercise bouts. CONCLUSIONS: An effective prophylaxis for perceived pain and muscular tenderness associated with DOMS is the performance of an eccentric exercise bout 6 to 9 weeks before a similar exercise bout.

[Evaluation of the use of dental operating microscope and ultrasonic instruments in the management of blocked canals].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of dental operating microscope (DOM) and ultrasonic instruments in treating blocked canals. METHODS: 135 blocked canals in 92 teeth were treated with ultrasonic tips and files under DOM. The etiology of canal blockage included calcification, broken instruments, post, resinifying therapy or ledge. These canals were negotiated and root canal therapy or pretreatment was performed. The success rates were calculated. RESULTS: 77 teeth were successfully managed with a success rate of 83.7%. 84.4% of the blocked canals were negotiated. The success rates of each category of the blocked canals were: 88.1% for calcified canals; 76.9% for canals blocked by instrument fragments; 100% for canals blocked by post; 81.1% for canals subjected to resinifying therapy; and 78.6% for ledged canals. Complications such as root canal perforation or vertical fracture did not occur. CONCLUSION: The use of DOM and ultrasonic instruments is proved to be an effective way in the management of blocked canals.

The effects of estrogen on indices of skeletal muscle tissue damage after eccentric exercise in postmenopausal women.

This study examined if estrogen (E) usage (in the form of hormone replacement therapy [HRT]) has a protective effect on skeletal muscle damage in postmenopausal women. Nine postmenopausal women (age 55.2 +/- 9.9 [mean +/- SD]) performed two exercise sessions at 70% of their maximal heart rate on HRT (E-HI) and without HRT (E-LO; following a 28-45 day HRT washout). All subjects followed a condition order of E-HI then E-LO with at least 42 days between exercise sessions. Serum creatine kinase (CK), perceived delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and maximal quadriceps isometric force (MIF) were taken pre-exercise, 24, 48 and 72-hr post exercise. E-HI and E-LO conditions produced a rise in CK (p < 0.001) after exercise; but CK after E-HI was greater than in E-LO (p < 0.001) at 24 hours and at 48 hours. DOMS was significantly elevated at 24, 48, and 72-hr post each exercise session (p < 0.05). The greatest peak DOMS score occurred during the E-HI condition. MIF was similarly reduced after each exercise session (p < 0.05). These results suggest elevated E does not offer a protective effect to skeletal muscle; however, design limitations (i.e., condition order) confound the present data. Interestingly, an association between peak-CK during the E-LO condition and the number of washout days (r = +0.707, p < 0.05) between conditions existed. This suggests a longer washout period may be necessary to elucidate the actual E effects on skeletal muscle. These findings suggest that more work correcting for the present design limitations is warranted on this topic.

[Spectral analysis of dissolved organic matter derived from rice straw after chemical treatment].

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV), and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) were used to study the chemical composition of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) derived from rice straw in the hydrolysis process with a dilute complex acid solution. The results obtained are as follows. FTIR spectra could indicate the changes of DOM during the hydrolysis process of rice straw. With the progress of rice straw hydrolysis, methyl, methylene, aromatic compounds and carbohydrates decreased, most of aliphatic compounds were oxidized to CO2 and H2O, and others were turned into carbonates. Most of the organic silicon was hydrolyzed into inorganic silicon. The proteins, amino acids and other nitrogen were hydrolyzed to NH4+. All the recalcitrant fractions of rice straw, such as hemi-cellulose, cellulose and silicon sharply decreased during the process of chemical treatment. The results obtained in this paper proposed that the changes of DOM of rice straw in the hydrolysis could be an indication in the changes of chemical composition of rice straw during the hydrolyzation, and FTIR, UV and NMR were good methods to study the changes in the structure of organic compounds.

[Study on characteristics of fluorescence spectra of dissolved organic matter with different water quality].

The fluorescence spectra of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in several types of water samples in combination with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements were measured in the laboratory, and the spectral characteristics of DOM were analysed. The curve of normalized fluorescence intensity against corresponding concentration of humic acid is showed. The results demonstrate the possibilities of water quality monitoring based upon fluorescence spectral characteristics of DOM by means of LIF method.

The effects of chondroitin sulfate supplementation on indices of muscle damage induced by eccentric arm exercise.

AIM: Delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) often results from unaccustomed exercise or exercise that involves heavy eccentric loading of skeletal muscle. Chondroitin sulfate (CS) has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and has been used widely in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Based on these findings, the investigators sought to determine whether CS supplementation might reduce DOMS symptoms associated with eccentric arm exercise. METHODS: Sixteen non-resistance-trained males participated in a double-blind protocol. Subjects consumed 3,600 mg x day-1 of encapsulated CS or placebo for 14 days preceding the exercise protocol and during 48 hours of follow-up measurements. Subjects performed a maximum of 50 eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors against a resistance that was 120% of the concentric one-repetition maximum. RESULTS: Significant time effects were present for soreness, relaxed elbow extension (joint angle), and creatine kinase; all measures were significantly altered 48 hours after the exercise session. No effects were present for complement system fragment C3a and prostaglandin E2. No significant treatment or interaction effects were detected for any of the variables. CONCLUSIONS: CS supplementation was not found to be effective in the prevention of DOMS, nor did it influence biochemical indices of inflammation and muscle damage following heavy eccentric loading of the arm flexors.

Effect of microcurrent stimulation on delayed-onset muscle soreness: a double-blind comparison.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation (MENS) treatment on pain and loss of range of motion (ROM) associated with delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). DESIGN AND SETTING: We assigned subjects to 1 of 2 groups. Group 1 received treatment with microcurrent stimulation (200 muA, 30 Hz, for 10 minutes, then 100 muA, 0.3 Hz, for 10 minutes) 24, 48, and 72 hours after DOMS induction. Group 2 served as a sham group and was treated using a machine altered by the manufacturer so that no current could flow through the electrodes. SUBJECTS: DOMS was induced in the biceps brachii of the nondominant arm of 18 subjects (3 males, 15 females: age = 20.33 +/- 2.3 years, ht = 170.81 +/- 7.3 cm, wt = 69.61 +/- 13.1 kg). Dominance was defined as the arm used by the subject to throw a ball. MEASUREMENTS: Subjective pain and active elbow extension ROM were evaluated before and after treatment each day. Two methods were used to assess pain: constant pressure using a weighted Orthoplast sphere and full elbow extension to the limit of pain tolerance. Subjective pain was measured with a graphic rating scale and active elbow extension ROM using a standard, plastic, double-armed goniometer. Three repeated-measures ANOVAs (between-subjects variable was group, within- subjects variables were day and test) were used to assess ROM and pain scores for the 2 groups. RESULTS: We found no significant difference in the measurement of subjective pain scores or elbow extension ROM when the MENS group was compared with the sham group. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that the MENS treatment, within the parameters used for this experiment, was not effective in reducing the pain or loss of ROM associated with delayed-onset muscle soreness.

[Fluorescence characteristics of dissolved organic matter during algal bloom in Jiaozhou Bay].

Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy (EEMS) was employed to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in algal bloom seawater of Jiaozhou Bay in February, 2004. The relationships of DOM fluorescence characteristics with phytoplankton multiplication, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH were discussed. In addition, the protein-like and humic-like fluorescence changes fore and aft cross-flow ultrafiltration (CFF) were primarily evaluated. The results show that the intensities of high and low-excitation protein-like fluorescence, which have the same sources, are stronger than that of humic-like during algal bloom. Both correlations between protein-like fluorescence intensities and chlorophyll-a and between humic-like fluorescence intensities and chlorophyll-a are relevant to the phytoplankton multiplication. As a whole, the fluorescence intensities of protein-like and humic-like increases with chlorophyll-a increasing. Furthermore the ratios of new to old DOM increase with phytoplankton biomass increasing. Good positive correlations between protein-like fluorescence intensities and DOC and between the ratios of protein-like to humic-like fluorescence intensities and DOC suggest that the DOC is mainly composed of newly produced matter during algal bloom. Some inorganic factors, such as salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH, have little effects on protein-like and humic-like fluorescence. Fore and aft the CFF experiments, the positions of protein-like and humic-like fluorescence peaks have little alteration, the balance of fluorescence intensity is not so good as organic carbon mass balance as a whole. Fluorescence balance should be used only as a supplementary technique for evaluating contaminations or loss by organic carbon mass balance.

The effects of vitamin C supplementation on symptoms of delayed onset muscle soreness.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of 8 days of vitamin C (VC) supplementation on elbow flexor delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) to 8 days of placebo ingestion. METHODS: For 3 days prior to an exercise bout (2 x 20 eccentric elbow extensions), and for 5 days after, a treatment group ingested 3 x 1000 mg/day of VC versus 3 x 50 mg/day of glucose ingestion for the placebo group over the same time period. All subjects were prescreened via dietary recall to exclude any subjects with habitual VC consumption greater than 400 mg/day. Subject comprised 24 subjects (male and female) randomly divided into 2 groups of 12 subjects. Treatment group comprised 5 females and placebo group comprised 8 females. RESULTS: Data from a repeated measures ANOVA indicate that DOMS was successfully induced in both groups via significant time effects for strength loss (P = 0.0001), point tenderness (P = 0.0001), elbow flexor decreased range of motion (P = 0.013), and subjective pain (P = 0.0001). However, there were no significant between group differences in response to any of the aforementioned variables: strength loss (P = 0.202), point tenderness (P = 0.824), elbow flexor range of motion (P = 0.208), subjective pain (P = 0.342). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that a VC supplementation protocol of 3 x 1000 mg/day for 8 days is ineffective in protecting against selected markers of DOMS.

[Effects of dissolved organic matter in landfill leachate on soil Cd- and Pb bioavailability].

A pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in landfill leachate on ryegrass growth and its uptake of soil Cd and Pb. Fresh sample and Shuige leachate were collected from the municipal waste landfills established 0 and 12 years, respectively. The results showed that after the landfill leachate added, the average concentration of DOM remained in soil was 1.39 (fresh sample) and 1.47 (Shuige) times higher than the control (CK). The bioavailability of Cd and Pb in the soils treated with the two leachates was fluctuated in early period, and then raised. Compared with CK, the bioavailability of soil Cd was increased by 4.81% (fresh sample) and 48.97% (Shuige), and that of soil Pb was enhanced by 7.22% (fresh sample) and 18.99% (Shuige). The total concentrations of plant Cd and Pb in the treatments of fresh sample and Shuige were 19.59% and 104.4%, and 36.03% and 44. 66% higher than CK, respectively, while the total biomass of ryegrass was decreased by 14.03% to approximately 52.24%, in compared with CK. It could be inferred that the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in landfill leachate, especially in that from the landfills established for a longer time, could enhance the bioavailability of soil heavy metals and their accumulation in plant, and thus, suppress the growth of plants.
