[Congenital malformations and asymmetric crying facies].

Asymmetric crying face (ACF) means a congenital anomaly caused by either agenesis or hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle. This defect is on only one corner of the mouth since the birth, affects lower lip, and is particularly evident when the newborn is crying. Lesions at different levels of seventh nerve can cause similar and confounding weakness of the facial expressions. But, in case of ACF, forehead wrinkling, eye closure, nasolabial fold depth, and tearing are normal and symmetric functions. ACF can be either as single plain aesthetic defect or as early only index of several congenital malformations, especially of heart and genitourinary tract. Our study recognized 80 ACF cases in 11,643 newborn's population during a 34 consecutive month period: 34 on right side and 46 on left side of the mouth. ACF population presented a higher malformative risk than general population (on average 4.73% versus 3.3% of our base-line). Congenital anomalies were found more frequently associated with left ACF (3 versus 1, for a general rate of 6.52% versus 2.94%), on the same body side when anomaly was affecting pair organs. Those 3 congenital malformations were on genitourinary tract, 2 of which detected by ultrasonography. We did not find any congenital cardiac defects. According to opinion of numerous other researchers, we think ACF is not to be considered a simple aesthetic anomaly: therefore, in front of all ACF cases, a thorough search for associated anomalies should be performed.

Characteristics and dental treatment of partial trisomy 9.

A description is made of the dental characteristics and treatment of a patient with partial trisomy 9. Due to the deep mental retardation and motor deficiency of the patient involved, treatment (extractions, caries restorations and periodontal treatment) is conducted in hospital and under general anesthesia. Trisomy 9 has only rarely been described in literature, and the present study provides one of the first descriptions of both the dental characteristics of these patients and the treatment of their oral pathology.

Chondroectodermal dysplasia: a case report.

Chondroectodermal Dysplasia is a disease complex consisting of bilateral manual polydactyly, chondrodysplasia of long bones resulting in acromelic dwarfism, hydroitic ectodermal dysplasia affecting principally the nails, teeth and hair and congenital heart malformations. It is necessary to identify this disease at its early stage in order to render prompt treatment. The oral manifestations are characteristic for this particular disease so that a dental surgeon can identify this condition and refer the case to a cardiologist and orthopedician for corrective surgeries. In this article, a case of a 2 1/2-year old child with chondro-ectodermal dysplasia is presented along with radiographic investigations and treatment plan.

[Open mouth posture. A review].

Open mouth posture is a risk factor for otitis media with effusion, orthodontic anomalies and possible other medical disturbances. In this article the relation between open mouth posture and orthodontic anomalies is discussed. The importance of early diagnosis, prevention and (interceptive) treatment is emphasized.

Mouthpart deformities and community composition of Chironomidae (Diptera) larvae downstream of metal mines in New Brunswick, Canada.

The effect of metal enrichment on chironomid communities was examined in streams receiving mine drainage from metal mining operations in New Brunswick, Canada. At five sites receiving mine drainage, metal concentrations were significantly (p < 0.05) elevated in water (Zn), periphyton (Cd, Co, Cu, and Zn), and chironomid tissue (Cu, Cd, and Zn) relative to five paired reference locations. Metal concentrations in chironomid larvae were significantly correlated with concentrations in both water and periphyton. Chironomid communities were severely affected at sites receiving mine drainage as demonstrated by reduced genera richness and altered community composition. Sites receiving mine drainage exhibited an increased abundance of metal-tolerant Orthocladiinae and a reduced abundance of metal-sensitive Tanytarsini relative to reference sites. The incidence of mentum deformities was significantly elevated at sites receiving mine drainage (1.43 +/- 0.24%), with the mean percentage approaching a doubling of that observed at reference sites (0.79 +/- 0.22%). Trace metal concentrations at mine-associated streams in New Brunswick significantly affected the benthic community and have the potential to alter the structure and function of these aquatic ecosystems.

[Microsurgical transplants for facial depressions].

From 1877 to 1991, 23 patients, 15 female and eight male, age ranging from eight to 42 years were treated for hemifacial depressions with microvascular transplants. Eight had hemifacial atrophy, four had hemifacial microsomia and one sequelae of hemangioma treatment. Twelve of these patients received paraescapular flaps, five omentum flaps, five great dorsal flaps and one fascial tensor flap. Good result was achieved in 21/23 patients with good symmetry. Two flaps were lost by vascular thrombosis. On of these patients later received a second microvascular flap with good result. Two patients presented late "reabsorption" of the flap after good result in the first year of follow-up. One of them received a second microvascular flap and again the flap lost volume in a long term follow-up. Discussion focuses on this important finding in terms of physiopathology. The results of different kinds of reconstruction are compared and the fact that dermofat flaps achieved best results is emphasized.
