[Responsibility of child guidance counseling services in suspected sexual abuse].

Some of the widely accepted assumptions concerning the correct way of dealing with alleged sexual abuse of children are considered. The claim is made that sexualized behaviour need not always be an indication for sexual abuse, but could rather result from a sexualized children culture or tradition. The teaching that one must always believe juveniles who claim that they have been sexually abused is considered doubtful an the general claim that "fathers are the abusers" is criticized. The suitability of the victim-perpetrator terminology for the work in child guidance centres is questioned. Finally, the frequently recommended conspirative way of dealing with allegations is rejected and instead the plea is made for closer co-operation between experts and police or state prosecutor. All in all it ist argued that child guidance centres should call more attention to their own particular possibilities in dealing with sexual abuse.

Consultation psychiatry in an Italian child guidance center: a report on 200 referrals.

A consecutive unselected series of 200 children referred for psychiatric consultation to an Italian Child Guidance Center is included in this study. All diagnoses were made in accord with the third edition of the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" (DSM III). Functional enuresis was the most common psychiatric disturbance (15 percent), followed by developmental reading disorder (14.5 percent) and mild mental retardation (12.5 percent). There was no case of attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (hyperkinetic syndrome). All depressions were consequences of another disorder and remitted when the child received attention and care. In 20.5 percent of cases no psychiatric diagnosis was made and the child apparently had been referred because of emotional problems in the parent.

Assessment of paraprofessionals' on-the-job performance in an outpatient child guidance clinic.

On-the-job performance of paraprofessional and professional staff of an outpatient child guidance clinic were compared in three respects: (a) ability to do intake interviewing, (b) maintain case records, and (c) collect research data for a therapy outcome study. Data indicated that paraprofessionals performed as well as professionals on each job activity, and suggest generally that paraprofessionals can adequately perform the various tasks assigned to them.
