Perusing 170 series of temporal bone sections, the course of the aqueduct was found to be a spindle shape, based on numerous dilatations in the middle section. Ample space was offered for development of bony excrescences such as exostotic depositions and osteoma-like protrusions of all sizes. These added considerably to the difficulties of a free passage through the aqueduct.

The intracochlear pressure cannot yet be evaluated in patients with certain audiological neuro-otological diseases. However, it seems to be of importance in the diagnosis and pathogenesis of Ménière's disease and related disorders. The present paper is aimed at introducing a setup to indirectly assess intracochlear and intracranial pressure changes and the design and philosophy of this technique. It is possible to describe a normal range of the measured values in healthy controls although large interindividual variations occur. In addition, the positional changes of the registered parameters enable assessment of the patency of the cochlear aquaeduct. This seems to be important in some diseases, such as stapes gusher.

Total protein contents in the perilymphy of Scala vestibuli and Scala tympani as well as in the cerobrospinal fluid (CSF) of guinea-pigs were determined, by which specimens were taken under the following various conditions: With or without subarachnoidal puncture before perilymph collection, by varying the amount of perilymph taken from Scala tympani, by fractionating collection and under post mortem condition. The results suggest that under physiological conditions the CSF also flows through the cochleae aqueduct and the protein concentration in the Scala tympani decreases especially in the basal winding. Because the protein content in CSF is inaverage four times lower than in fluids of the inner ear it is of preference to consider the question of connection between the CSF and the fluids of the inner ear. In the specimens taken the blood contamination was estimated on the basisof erythrocytes in the connection capillaries under microscope. The protein content in the perilymph of Scala vestibuli was found significantly higher in relation to perilymph of Scala tympani.
