Over the period of 1995-1999 a total number of 439 cases were admitted to the Clinic of Acute Poisonings, Łódź, Poland, due to poisoning with opiates, opioids, amphetamine, cannabis products, LSD and cocaine. Most of the patients were males, the male to female ratio was 1:1.5 (266 to 173). The distribution by age indicated the persons aged 21-30 yr as the highest risk group, then those aged 14-21 yr. Over the period under study the structure of poisonings changed significantly. Since 1997 the number of poisonings with amphetamine and cannabis products increased dramatically, while that of opiate poisonings declined. Approximately 84% of cases were found to be addicted to a combination of drugs and psychotropic agents, mostly benzodiazepine and ethyl alcohol. Drug addiction was reported by over 80% patients with opiate poisoning, 44.8% with tetrahydrocannabinole poisoning and only 9.5% with amphetamine poisoning. The efficacy of treatment in cases of drug addiction is very low. Repeated treatment was reported by almost 100% of patients who had attempted to quit drug abuse. Among opiate poisoning cases, only 8 out of 45 patients did not question the effectiveness of the withdrawal treatment.

The application of small computers in paediatrics facilitates the registration of patients' dates. The possibility of utilization essentially enlarges in the use of divided BASIC-programmes (programme of dates' safe-keeping and calculation). Examples from the neonatology illustrate a suitable employment.

The Environmental Symptoms Questionnaire (ESQ) was developed to obtain information about the incidence and severity of symptoms produced by exposure to several different climatic conditions. A subsequent revision is reported here, along with a description of its use in two studies involving physical stresses frequently encountered by military personnel. The first study examined the effects of prolonged flight on the health and physical work performance of men assigned to an overseas station. The second study tested the effects of acute altitude exposure on the load-carrying capacity of men over a period of several days. Five independent symptom factors were identified in the data of the first study, and then were applied to the analyses of treatments of both studies. The factor scores exhibited predictable and meaningful data in both cases. The factors are described, results are compared to previous studies, and general recommendations for use of the questionnaire are made.
A system of processing the laboratory data of a busy haematology department serving a teaching group of hospitals and the general practitioners of the district is described. The system, which has been in routine use for over two years, is based on a dedicated CTL8030 computer sited in the laboratory utilising Lynwood visual display units (VDUs) for both input and access to the data files. Data from the Coulter 'S' is fed by an interface to the computer and to other data handling modules. Manual test results are entered via VDUs, mainly by laboratory staff who also validate all data. Access is available to all data for answering telephone requests. Data are retained on the disc file for 48 hours only, and cumulative reporting was not planned into the system as deliberate policy. Quality control of the Coulter 'S' output is maintained both throughout the day and retrospectively at the end of each working day using both whole blood patient blood transfusion profiles, a record of blood and product usage, worksheets, quality control information, end-of-day listing in alphabetical order plus statistical information for administrative purposes. Since its introduction the system has been remarkably free from breakdown as a result of hardware failure. A number of fail safe/fallbacks have been included in the system.
Our objectives were to describe the milkshed comprising herds in New York, western New Jersey, and central and eastern Pennsylvania in regard to milk yield, composition, and quality and also to estimate the effects of season, herd size, and geographic area on those same variables. Data were collected from July 1993 through June 1994 from 3450 herds. The effect of a somatic cell count (SCC) limit of 500,000/ml on milk yield and the composition of monthly bulk tank milk for all marketed milk was estimated as was the frequency of deliveries of milk that contained SCC that were greater than this limit. All general linear models for mean monthly yield of milk and milk components (fat and protein) and SCC were significant for fixed effects of month and herd size within quartiles for herd size (defined by the number of lactating cows) and significant absorbed effects of herds within quartiles for herd size within subregion. Milk yield, milk components (kilograms), true protein percentage, and SCC were significantly higher in spring than in fall for both data files (complete data file and data file containing only herds with SCC < 500,000/ml). Thirty-five percent of herds with < 27 lactating cows but only 15.3% of herds with > 62 lactating cows had > or = 1 mo with an SCC > 500,000/ml. For herds in the subregions, percentages of shipments with an SCC > or = 500,000/ml ranged from 10.5 to 20.2%. Herds with < 27 lactating cows contributed to the milkshed a disproportionate percentage of SCC (11%) compared with their percentage of contribution of milk (5%).
The unabridged data used in preparing ICRP Publication 38 (1983) and a monograph of the Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD) Committee (Weber et al. 1989) are now available in electronic form. The "ICRP38 collection" contains data on the energies and intensities of radiations emitted by 825 radionuclides (those in ICRP Publication 38 plus 13 from the MIRD monograph), and the "MIRD collection" contains data on 242 radionuclides. Each collection consists of a radiations data file and a beta spectra data file. The radiations data file contains the complete listing of the emitted radiations, their types, mean or unique energies, and absolute intensities for each radionuclide. The beta spectra file contains, for each beta-emitting radionuclide, the probability that a beta particle will be emitted with kinetic energies defined by a standard energy grid. Although summary information from the radiations data files has been published, neither the unabridged data nor the beta spectra have been published. These data files and a data extraction utility, which runs on a personal computer, are available from the Radiation Shielding Information Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
A new system was developed for processing annual personal health examination data with a portable microcomputer utilizing commercial software by converting the IBM formatted data file of the law mandated health examination for adults into an MS-DOS file. The sequential data file was further transferred into a random access data file by a simple program and software was developed for the presentation of annual personal data by table and graphs. Printout of data and selected comments filed on disc by the public health nurse or physician could become retrievable. This system is easily operated by a beginner in micro-computers from conversion of the original data to actual demonstration. This system was utilized for a small village of about 700 adults. By using part of the main memory as a RAM disc, presentation of 5 years' data was possible. File capacity was dependent on population size and also on the type of software for Japanese language input. In the case of a larger population, use of hard disc or expansion of memory may be recommended to shorten computer start-up time. Once necessary data has been placed into the field buffer's memory, retrieval of data requires less than one second. The results of health examination were usually provided by hard copies to village. But by use of this system, a more effective transfer of data between computerized systems by using a floppy disc is possible.
