[Secondary prevention of gastric cancer in a risk group of persons without gastric acid. 2nd communication (author's transl)].

More than 6,000 predominant unselected persons were examined by tubeless gastric acid test using the "Desmoidpille" and by simultaneous determination of uropepsin according to West et al. About 1,000 probands demonstrating a lacking acid secretion were recognized as risk group and taken into supervision over several years since 1972. In this risk group 20 cases of gastric cancer were detected, 9 of them already by first investigation. 5 gastric cancers were found during the follow-up as true early gastric cancers. In 5,200 probands without risk signs (normal acid test) only 6 cases of gastric cancer were observed during time of follow-up. So it is a high risk group indeed, we have selected. Regarding the casuistry of 7 persons, younger than 70 years of age, with gastric cancer detected during follow-up, 4 of them survived, such a dispensaire included in a general geriatric care seems useful to practice.

[The information potential of the names of drugs].

Authors pay their attention to the issue of names of pharmaceuticals and drugs and their relationship to their therapeutic use. They specify way of making names of pharmaceuticals and structure of those names (chemical name, trivial name, generic name, unprotected name--INN, name in dispensatory) and way of making names of drugs (protected titles of original drugs, names of generic drugs). One part of the work comprises a chapter applying to subsidiary pharmaceutical agents and their E-code.

[Pharmaceutical literature in the library of the Kuks Hospice I. A contribution to the history of the hospital pharmacy of the Brethern of Mercy called "The Pomegranate" at Kuks].

During the research of the history of the Baroque pharmacy of the Merciful Brethern at the Kuks Hospice (Eastern Bohemia), established in 1743, and its professional standard, pharmaceutical literature was found at the preserved hospice library. The present author first focused on the existence of basic, obligatory literature: dispensatories, tariffs of medicaments, and juridical literature (pharmaceutical laws). There survived a small number of these books because many books were destroyed during various wars. The following dispensatories (pharmacopoeias) were found: Dispensarorium pharmaceuticum Austriaco-Viennense 1729/1738, Dispensatorium Regium et Electorale Borusso-Brandenburgicum 1744, Dispensatorium pharmaceuticum Pragensae renovatum 1750, Pharmacopoea Austriaco-provincialis 1774, 1775, 1790, 1794 (including a critical commentary by Z. G. Huszty 1797), The Military Dispensatory 1795, Pharmacopoea Austriaca 1812, 1814 and 1855. There are a few books of the tariffs of medicaments (only from 1795, 1816 and 1866) and juridical literature. These dispensatories (and their occurrence) will be useful for an analysis of laboratory preparation and supplying this pharmacy. A few illustrations of pharmaceutical literature, found bookplates, and a print of a painting of Count F. A. Sporck are attached.

Building a retrospective collection in pharmacy: a brief history of the literature with some considerations for U.S. health sciences library professionals.

This paper argues that historical works in pharmacy are important tools for the clinician as well as the historian. With this as its operative premise, delineating the tripartite aspects of pharmacy as a business enterprise, a science, and a profession provides a conceptual framework for primary and secondary resource collecting. A brief history and guide to those materials most essential to a historical collection in pharmacy follows. Issues such as availability and cost are discussed and summarized in checklist form. In addition, a glossary of important terms is provided as well as a list of all the major U.S. dispensatories and their various editions. This paper is intended to serve as a resource for those interested in collecting historical materials in pharmacy and pharmaco-therapeutics as well as provide a history that gives context to these classics in the field. This should provide a rationale for selective retrospective collection development in pharmacy.
