Social support, reciprocity, and well-being.

Systematic random-sampling procedures were used to gather a sample of 191 community residents in Kaohsiung city, Taiwan, and survey them regarding (a) amount of social support given and received; (b) perceived reciprocity of support in relationships with family members, friends, and colleagues; (c) negative affect; and (d) psychological symptoms. Extraversion and social desirability were also measured. Both receiving and giving support were related to negative affect after controlling for the effects of extraversion and social desirability. These two personality factors also substantially masked the negative impact of support on psychological symptoms. Reciprocity of support within the family domain was related to well-being. Individual differences in support exchanges were noted, and women received more support than men.

The relationship of personality to affective disorders.

Although characterologic constellations such as obsessionalism, dependency, introversion, restricted social skills, and maladaptive self-attributions are popularly linked to the pathogenesis of depressive disorders, the evidence in support of this relationship remains modest. Indeed, many of these attributes may reflect state characteristics woven into the postdepressive personality. Current evidence is strongest for introversion as a possible premorbid trait in primary nonbipolar depressions. By contrast, driven, work-oriented obsessoid, extroverted, cyclothymic, and related dysthymic temperaments appear to be the precursors of bipolar disorders. Other personalities, while not necessarily pathogenic in affective disorders, nevertheless may modify the clinical expression of affective disorders and their prognosis.

Psychological health and sense of humor.

Scores on the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale (MSHS) are shown to be related positively to a number of factors associated with psychological health, such as optimism and self esteem, and negatively with signs of psychological distress such as depression. Humor is a multidimensional construct that seems to be intimately related to quality of life.

The effects of EMG feedback training on state anxiety in introverts and extraverts.

The effect of EMG feedback on state anxiety was investigated in anxious introverts and extraverts. Although both groups learned to relax their muscles adequately, only the introverts reported a significant decrement in anxiety. Some extraverts reacted adversely to the technique, which suggests that other methods to inhibit anxiety may be necessary for this group.

Neuroticism and negative affect measures as predictors of psychological distress.

In a year-long study, 106 students (78 women and 28 men, mean age 29 yr.) completed both a self-report Neuroticism and Extroversion inventory and a self-report positive and negative affect checklist at the beginning of an academic year. At the end of the academic year, prior to final examinations, they completed a self-rating scale for depression. The Neuroticism score was the only significant independent predictor of students' end-of-year levels of psychological distress.

Psychologic profiles of and sexual function in women with vulvar vestibulitis and their partners.

OBJECTIVE: To compare psychologic profiles of women with vulvar vestibulitis and their partners with a normal population, and to identify sexual dysfunction in women and their partners. METHODS: Forty-three women with vulvar vestibulitis and 38 partners, recruited from a gynecology outpatient clinic, completed the Symptom Check List-90, the Short Dutch Version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the Maudsley Marital Questionnaire, and the Questionnaire for Screening Sexual Dysfunctions. RESULTS: The women with vulvar vestibulitis scored significantly higher on the somatization and shyness subscales than a normal population. They didn't differ in respect to their current level of psychologic distress, extraversion, risk of psychopathology, and marital satisfaction. Their partners had significantly lower scores for psychopathology than a normal population. They didn't differ from a normal population in respect to their level of psychologic distress, extraversion, shyness, somatization, and marital satisfaction. Women with vulvar vestibulitis reported more frequent problems and higher distress with genital pain, lubrication, sexual arousal, and negative emotions in the sexual interaction with the partner. During masturbation, however, they reported less frequent problems and distress. The partners of these women reported nearly no problems or distress in either sexual situation. CONCLUSION: Women with vulvar vestibulitis and their partners seem in general to be psychologically healthy, although vulvar vestibulitis may be associated with a situationally defined sexual dysfunction for the women.
