Seminar on adult mortality and orphanhood in the past: five Latin American cases.

This report concerns a seminar on adult mortality and orphanhood in the past in Latin America that was held in San Jose, Costa Rica, December 12-14, 1984. The first part describes five historical studies presented at the seminar concerning Mexico, Chile, Peru, Brazil, and Argentina. "The second part of this article is an explanation of the calculation involved in a life table derived from information on the incidence of orphanhood according to the age of newly married couples on their marriage."

Mortality in Italy: contours of a century of evolution.

The authors construct contour maps of Italian male and female mortality rates for ages 0-79 for the years 1870-1979 using life table data from published sources. The maps "display persistent global and prominent local patterns of mortality, simultaneously over age, by period, and for cohorts." Previously documented aspects of the evolution of Italian mortality are highlighted graphically, and new areas for study are indicated. (summary in FRE, ITA)

[Orphans and adult mortality. The example of France between 1740 and 1829].

The relationship between adult mortality and the proportion of orphans in France in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is analyzed. Data are from a research project developed at the Institut National d'Etudes Demographiques [INED] and concern data for some 400 communes, together with life tables developed for the periods 1740-1749 and 1820-1829. "This paper is divided in two chapters. The first chapter examines the different proportions of orphans, observed in the above mentioned periods. The second one confronts these proportions with comparable values derived from mortality tables." Consideration is given to the relationship between parents' death and timing of marriage of

[Adult mortality and orphanhood in the past: five Latin American cases].

"This paper describes the historical evolution of five populations and analyzes the circumstances under which data on maternal and paternal orphanhood of couples at the moment of marriage were collected and compiled." The data, which concern historical populations in Mexico, Chile, Peru, Brazil, and Argentina, are used to construct life tables for male and female adults. Consideration is given to mortality differentials by sex. (summary in ENG)

Evaluating the Slavonian census of 1698. Part I: structure and meaning.

"Microsimulation, other demographic tools, and evidence of history and ethnography are used to evaluate an important 17th century household census [in Slavonia, which is modern Croatia]. Linguistic, ethnographic, and internal evidence allow adjustment of anomalies in census categories. Microsimulation based on historically and ethnographically plausible rates and household formation scenarios produces simulated households in accord with those of the adjusted census. Results permit estimation of the true population of the region, of the kinship and age composition of households under frontier conditions, and the probable future composition of households as the frontier stabilized and land shortage began to exert pressure for greater density and household complexity. Part I concentrates on historical, ethnographic, and linguistic evidence." (SUMMARY IN FRE)

[Factors affecting age structure of skeletal populations].

Problems concerning the study of the age of a skeletal population are explored. Five factors are considered including environmental pressures, the initial age structure of the population, migration, epidemics and other natural disasters, and fertility. "The analysis has been carried out by means of the simulation method, using 3 age structures of living individuals observed several hundred years in the light of various disturbances, 6 life tables and several fertility rates. Values of expectancy of life calculated by means of the demographic method and that used in anthropology are compared." The populations considered are from Poland. (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[The colonial state and demographic knowledge in French West Africa, 1904-1960].

"Our lack of knowledge on the production of population estimates in France's colonial empire is in sharp contrast to the efforts of British authorities after 1940. To understand this ¿omission', we have to assess the numerous oppositions existing within the French colonial state.... After the first memoranda of 1904 and 1909, colonial census-taking activities were inexorably merged with everyday administrative tasks: taxation, justice, policing, etc. This shift clearly influenced the form and function of demographic knowledge in French West Africa (AOF).... We conclude with a mixed assessment of attempts to amass demographic knowledge and especially of the influence such knowledge actually had on decision-making." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)
