Longitudinal analysis of internal migration to La Paz, Bolivia.

"This study examines the migration patterns of Bolivians who have moved from other provinces to La Paz. In order to better understand these patterns, the capital city was divided into eight similar socio-economic regions and the migration patterns analyzed for selected regions. In addition, the study compares the migrant flows for two time periods: location at the time of birth, and the migrant's residence in 1971. The research analyzes statistically the differences between migration fields for a representative area."

Emigration, return, immigration: a review and evaluation of Greece's postwar experience of international migration.

"This paper offers a review and evaluation of the Greek experience of international migration.... The analysis is based partly on available published data, and partly on qualitative appraisals. Three major international migration phases are analysed--emigration, return migration and immigration--and the main socio-economic and cultural effects of these migration trends are discussed. The paper pays particular attention to the recent mass immigration movements, noting their heterogeneity...and describing their impact on the Greek labour market. The article concludes with some comments on the difficulties of formulating a Greek migration policy in the light of the country's location, open borders and internationalized economy."

The linkage between immigration and internal migration in large metropolitan areas in the United States.

"This paper investigates the relationship between the internal migration of native-born workers and flows of immigrants to the United States using the 1980 and 1990 U.S. Census Bureau microsamples.... Based on the estimation of three sets of regression models for five overlapping samples of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States and five mutually exclusive segments of the labor force, this analysis shows that the finding of a significant linkage between internal migration and immigration depends critically on the empirical experiment used. In direct opposition to previous published research, we conclude that net migration of the native born for metropolitan areas is either positively related or unrelated to immigration. Our models show that the net migration loss of unskilled native workers from metropolitan areas is probably a function of those cities' population size rather than immigrant flow to them. We conclude that the net migration loss of native-born workers from large metropolitan areas is more likely the result of industrial restructuring than of competition with immigrants."

[Internal migration in developing countries: rationality of rural-urban migration].

"In many developing countries there is a positive and nondecreasing rural-urban net migration. As a rule, making migration decisions jointly is advantageous for individual potential migrants and their families. Rationality of migration decisions depends on the specific character of the constituents of the basic decision model. In most cases, individual or family rationality of migration does not coincide with collective rationality. Trying to bring the two together requires trying to improve the coordinative function of main economic variables and trying to improve the decision makers' information." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[An overview of internal migration in the United States].

"This article briefly looks at internal migration in the United States, with [particular] reference to the reversal of the tendency that was observed in the early seventies, when the South became a region that clearly gained from migratory exchanges with the other regions. The phenomenal growth of the Sun Belt during the seventies constitutes, without doubt, one of the outstanding demographic features of this decade, in the United States. With data from the 1980 Census, this article examines the migratory situation at the state level, during the 1975-1980 period." Consideration is given to the likelihood of the continuation of the migration balance in favor of the Sun Belt in the future. (summary in ENG, SPA)

Modelling internal migration in Kenya: an econometric analysis with limited data.

"In this paper the determinants of internal migration in Kenya are analyzed on the basis of a human capital model. Explanatory variables included in the specification are both economic (wage rates and employment rates) and noneconomic (for example, population density and educational attainment). Also incorporated are variables which reflect intervening opportunities.... The econometric results show that destination variables are important determinants of internal migration, as is distance between the districts. Further, the variables for the intervening opportunities add significantly to the explanatory power of the model."
