[Nurses' assistants: problems and perspectives concerning the changes in the nursing profession].

The 'new' figure of the nurse-assistant is at the same time desired and feared by the nursing profession. In fact nurses could easily delegate some of their tasks and at the same time this would reduce their workload but also the number of nurses needed. The discussion on what could be delegated is still on the floor and there is urgent need of redefining the content of the work of the nurses. An open discussion also with the doctors is warranted, together with a careful analysis of how the problem has been dealt with in other countries.

[Development of the nursing profession].

In Finland nursing has been seen as an encounter between a nurse and a client or a patient. It is necessary to see nursing from the wider point of view and the wholeness of the profession it consists. There are at least three universal dimensions. They are: to fulfill the basic task of nursing, the development of nursing discipline and the development of the profession. The profession cannot be developed without a strong commitment in the task of nursing this commitment and its improvement being the most important challenge of nursing. The commitment is followed by responsibility, collegiality and collectivity as means to achieve the mutual goal. It is important to achieve the professional nursing education, which means university education. This kind of education is necessary because it provides ability to keep up with scientific studies, to apply the results of the studies to do research work. The education of nursing leaders also must be the kind it provides with ability to commit oneself to development of nursing and nursing research on one's own area, and managing nursing from the point of view of the knowledge base of nursing discipline, i.e. from the leadership and management theories of nursing.

Assisted reproductive technology: a dilemma for the nursing profession.

Assisted Reproductive Technology, despite poor outcomes in the treatment of infertility, is poised to take on a new supplementary role to genetic engineering. As an extreme example of medical/reductionist philosophy it is diametrically opposed to the emerging commitment to holism within the nursing profession. Nurses in Australia have been noticeably absent from the debate, research and decision making that has occurred about this technology, yet the implications for professional practice are far-reaching.

Work-home conflict in the European nursing profession.

This study investigated predictors of the work-home conflict among registered nurses (n = 27,603) in eight European countries. Two scales were used to assess work-family conflict (WFC) and family-work conflict (FWC). Based on a distinction of time- and strain-based and individual factors for WFC, bivariate correlations and multiple linear regression analysis were computed. The relationship between WFC and intention to leave the nursing profession was also analyzed. Quantitative demands indicating intensity of work, regularity of working time, and being pressured to work overtime were the dominating predictors for WFC, explaining 13-23% of the observed variance. The association between WFC and intention to leave the nursing profession was pronounced in all countries except one. Most European countries lack qualified nurses. Attempts to retain nurses in their profession should take into consideration the WFC, the regularity of working time in particular, and overtime issues.
