Results of the use of polyplatillen--a preparation consisting of sodium nucleinate (deoxyribonucleic acid) and cisplatin combined in the saline balanced solution by means of the original technique--in cancer of the ovaries (198 patients), liver (62), pancreas (35), lungs (12), stomach (5) are presented. Clearly pronounced specific activity of the preparation developed is noted.
MR imaging (MRI) possesses good sensitivity in diagnosis of carcinoma of the prostate. It is often not possible to distinguish clearly between carcinoma of the prostate and prostate hypertrophy. MRI can assess the local extension of a prostate carcinoma with a high degree of accuracy (85%); this applies in particular to periprostatic infiltration. MRI possesses only moderate sensitivity in diagnosis of regional lymph node metastases in the minor pelvis.

Sentinel lymph node (sN) biopsy has gained special attention among surgical and medical oncologists as it represents an accepted technique for detecting occult nodal disease in regional lymph nodes of patients with melanoma and breast cancer. The histopathologic examination of the sN may well predict regional lymph node status in order to define the most suitable loco-regional and systemic treatment. Recently, this technique has also been applied to other solid tumor types such as gynecologic and urologic malignancies, squamous head and neck cancer, thyroid cancer, non-small-cell lung cancer, Merkel cell carcinoma, and gastric cancer. The aim of this literature review is to define the rationale of sN biopsy in these tumor sites, the most effective procedure for sN detection, and the accuracy of the sN in predicting regional nodal status, as well as the surgical perspectives of sN biopsy application.

A concise review is presented of the current applications and techniques of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the field of diagnostic imaging of oncologic disease of the gastrointestinal tract, with a summary of the diagnostic possibilities of MRI in the various types of tumor pathology of the gastrointestinal tract. We conclude with a review of the specific situations in which MRI presents distinct advantages over other diagnostic imaging methods (such as computed tomography and ultrasound).

Postoperative CT of the latero-cervical lymph nodes was carried out in 25 patients suffering from laryngeal cancer. The surgically removed lymph nodes themselves were measured and examined histologically. 529/621 removed lymph nodes (about 85%) were recognisable with CT. The metastasized lymph nodes were clearly identified because of the presence of hypodense, poorly vascularised central foci. Some lymph nodes with a diameter of more than 15 mm on CT investigation proved free from metastatic lesions. This criterion should therefore be considered inadequate for diagnostic purposes. The CT cannot be held to be sufficiently precise to avoid conservative functional latero-cervical emptying as it is probably not able to recognise metastases without capsular rupture, not present in this series.

Twenty-two endometrial stromal sarcomas were studied by flow cytometric analysis and the results were correlated with surgical stage, nuclear grade, mitotic index, and recurrence. Ploidy determination was not helpful in predicting recurrence in patients with Stage I disease because all 14 were diploid. Only 2 of the 22 tumors were aneuploid; both were high-stage neoplasms. Cell proliferation (%S or %S + %G2/M) did not significantly correlate with vascular invasion, nuclear grade, mitotic index, or surgical stage. Of the 13 Stage I neoplasms with follow-up data, three recurred. The mean proliferation index (%S + %G2/M) of those that recurred was 12.81 +/- 0.47, which did not differ from those that did not recur (mean 12.25 +/- 4.11).
