The article contains data on radiation situation in Moscow region, characteristics of overall beta-activity of ambient air, fall-out density, radionuclide contents of foods. Radionuclides content of environment appeared to decrease by 2-3 orders. Individual doses of internal irradiation for Moscow population are 100 times lower than the levels legally set for technogenic sources.
Thirteen patients with locally advanced or recurrent breast carcinoma were monitored during radiation therapy by multiple, sequential, fine-needle aspiration biopsies (FNAB) with flow cytometry. The material was analyzed for qualitative cytomorphological evidence of radiation effect and for DNA content and cell cycle alterations. DNA ploidy was not affected by the radiation therapy, although the aneuploid tumors showed an increased frequency of cell cycle alterations. The most common change seen was an increase in S-G2M (58%). Other changes included a decrease in the proliferative/growth fraction (17%) and no significant redistribution of cells (25%). There was a relationship between the initial proliferative activity of the tumors and the type of cell cycle change which occurred. Flow cytometric analysis was a better predictor of early clinical response than was cytomorphological assessment. Sequential FNAB with flow cytometry is an effective method of monitoring the response of breast cancer to radiation therapy.

A system has been developed to monitor and integrate on-line a small fraction of the monochromatic ultraviolet radiation directed at the skin from a phototest source, thus correcting for fluctuations in the irradiance. On completion of the required test dose, the exposure is terminated automatically. Radiation is reflected from a silica plate, housed in a skin applicator, onto a photodiode connected to an integrator. The variation of the reflectivity of the silica plate with wavelength and with incident angle was calculated. The reflectivity of the applicator with and without the silica plate in situ was studied experimentally. Measurements were made of the spatial distribution of irradiance from and across the face of the applicator. To calibrate the photodiode current, the absolute irradiance at the face of the applicator had to be measured with a wide angle detector. No significant deviation from a linear variation was observed between changes in the skin irradiance and changes in the photodiode current.
