[Multiple primary malignant paragangliomas of the bladder and retroperitoneal space].

An observation of the primarily multiple malignant paraganglioma of the urinary bladder and retroperitoneal space in combination with multiple uterine fibromyomas in a woman of 46 is described. Duration of the hypertension was 30 years. Hypertension crisis (up to 300/180 mm Hg) were usually associated with the urine discharge. Surgical removal of tumours was followed by a severe hypertension due to the catecholamine release into the circulation. Grimelius method confirmed the presence of endocrine granules in the cytoplasm of tumour cells. The role of chronic endocrine pathology in the evolution of extra-adrenal chromaffinomas and some questions of morphogenesis are discussed.

[Lymphatic cyst of the retroperitoneal space (author's transl)].

The authors describe an enormous lymphatic cyst, occupying cephalad and of the retroperitoneal space on the left side, half of it filled with a liquid collection and the other half being solid, displacing and compressing the stomach, spleen, and left kidney and adrenal gland (the later showing evidence of athrophy as a result of compression), Witlial, the patient had no subjective complaints and gave no objective signs of illness beyond the mere evidence of a space-occupying mass.

[Use of computerized tomography and echography in the diagnosis and treatment of abscesses of the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space].

An analysis of complex use of computer tomography and echography for diagnostics, aimed biopsy and following measures in 32 patients with foci of purulent infection in organs of the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space has been made. In 11 patients with small abscesses not more than 5 cm in diameter percutaneous aimed punctures of the pus cavity were fulfilled followed by the aspiration of the content and introduction of an antibiotic. In 21 patients percutaneous drains were introduced into the abscesses by Seldinger's method or through a trocar. Curative punctures and percutaneous drainage in 85.7% of the patients gave successful results.

[Nonorganic tumors of the retroperitoneal space].

The investigation performed gave the impression that only early diagnosis of tumors in the retroperitoneal space of non-organic genesis could give the timely and radical treatment. The authors believe that the dynamic observation, diagnosis and surgical treatment of relapses will give considerably better remote results.

[Possibilities of computerized tomography in the diagnosis of abscesses in the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space].

The article presents results of the computer tomography examination of 205 patients at different terms after operations who were clinically suspected of the development of a limited pyo-inflammatory process in the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneal space. Abscesses were revealed in 112 patients, inflammatory infiltrates in 16 patients, the development of purulent complications was excluded in 77 patients which allowed relaparotomy to be rejected in 93 patients. The computer tomography symptoms of abdominal abscesses were established. The dependence of the abscess semiotics on the stage of the suppurative process, its specific localization, intra- or extraorganic disposition, contents and size of the abscess was shown.

[Diagnostic errors in diseases of the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space in children].

The results of analysis of the diagnosis disjunction in 544 (17.2%) operated children, revealed for the period of 10 years, were adduced. The differential diagnosis mistakes of an acute appendicitis versus the other surgical pathology of abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space were stipulated by objective (the peritonitis existence) and subjective (insufficient examination of the patient) reasons.

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of voluminous formations in the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space in newborn infants].

Introduction of the ultrasound research method into obstetrical practice has given rise to a possibility of revealing developmental abnormalities and neoformations in the prenatal period. The same method enables identifying volumetric formations in the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space in the newborn. Ultrasound examination of the newborn presupposes the obligatory use of the equipment working in the real time mode, with a high rate of image design as well as the use of monitors run at a frequency of not less than 5 to 7.5 mHz with a wide visual field and equipped with the electronic switching of emitters. Until now there have been no reported data on the side effects of ultrasonic energies used for diagnosis. That is why this method can be regarded as absolutely safe for children.

[Exploration and surveillance of the retroperitoneal space by lymphography and ultrasonography in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (author's transl)].

The authors propose to conduct, in a systematic manner, lymphography and ultrasonography examinations before treatment of 75 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The latter investigation enables examination of the upper part of the retroperitoneal space, and the detection of coeliomesenteric adenopathies, or possible lesions in the liver, spleen, and kidneys. The surveillance of most patients during treatment is possible with ultrasonography, if marked lipiodol resorption has occurred. Though this procedure is easy to conduct in all radiological departments, it does not have the same sensitivity as lymphography associated with computed tomography.

[A method for retroperitoneoscopy in surgery on the the organs of the retroperitoneal space].

828 patients were operated on the retroperitoneal organs since 1985 using a retroperitoneoscope. A total of 836 surgical interventions were performed. A cut of 3.0-3.5 cm long was made to revise the kidney and ureter, retroperitoneal part of the colon, tail of the pancreas, retroperitoneal vessels and lymph nodes via lumbocostal and inguinal approaches. A new intercostal (ribs X-XI) approach is proposed. Most of the patients had urolithiasis, pyoinflammatory lesions, renal cysts, varicocele, obstructive uropathies. Complications developed in 1.7% of cases. Retroperitoneoscopy is a method of choice in diagnosis and treatment of retroperitoneal diseases.

[Errors in the diagnosis of tumors of the retroperitoneal space of nonorganic origin].

The analysis of case histories of 152 patients with non-visceral tumors of the retroperitoneal space established misdiagnosis of tumor in 45.7%. Some patients (38.1%) presented with tumor, swelling and/or severe pain in the ipsilateral leg. Tumor proved inoperable in 50.4%. Diagnosis of tumor is complicated mainly by the diversity of patterns and peculiarities of clinical course. Also, lack of knowledge about the pathology and unawareness of cancer may account for misdiagnosis by general practitioners.

[Chemo-irradiation therapy of non-organ malignant tumors of abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space].

There are presented the results of treatment of 76 patients with nonorganic malignant tumor of abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space, to whom surgical treatment (radical or palliative one with partial excision of tumor) was not conducted due to various reasons. In 25 patients special treatment was not conducted, in 14--was performed chemotherapy only, in 17--radiation therapy only and in 17--the treatment using radiation plus chemotherapy. Application of special method of treatment have permitted to increase the patients life span, to improve its quality. An advantage of endolymphatic method of chemotherapy in comparison with conventional methods of chemopreparations administration was noted.
