A study on the relation between the Epstein-Barr virus and some forms of malignant tumors in children.

The presence of antibodies to the virus capsid antigen of the Epstein-Barr virus was established in the sera of children from different forms of neoplasms with the aid of the indirect method of immunofluorescence according to Henle. 69 sera were studied from children with Wilm's tumor, teratoblastoma, reticulosarcoma, neuroblastoma, sarcoma and also from children with benignant tumors. As control served sera from healthy children of corresponding age. As test cells synthesizing the virus capsid antigen the authors utilized a suspension culture of P3HR-I cells, being one of the clones of Burkitt's lymphoma. The performed investigations have shown that in no one group of children with tumor could there be discovered an increase in the content of antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus in comparison to controls. It has also been revealed that the spread of the Epstein-Barr virus in different groups of patients and healthy children fluctuated between 83 and 100%.

[Study of the antitumor activity of carminomycin in malignant tumors in children (a preliminary report)].

Side reactions and therapeutic effect of carminomycin were studied in 21 children with various malignant tumors. Carminomycin was administered intravenously in doses of 0.15-0.2 mg/kg twice a week for 2-3 weeks. The treatment courses were repeated in a month. The drug was better tolerated by children than by adults. After the treatment course leucopenia may develop. When used alone or in combination with vincristin or cyclophosphan carminomycin proved to be effective in treatment of sarcoma of the soft tissues (liposarcoma, synovial sarcoma), chondrosarcoma and reticulosarcoma.

Malignant lymphomas of the nervous system.

In a series of some 7,000 patients with tumors of the central nervous system, 208 patients (about 3%) had some form of a malignant lymphoma. Slightly less than half of these tumors were primary in the brain; the remainder had cranial involvement as part of a generalized process. The tumors consisted of Hodgkin's disease, lymphosarcomas, reticulosarcomas and plasmacytomas. The brain was involved in one of two ways: either as localized tumor masses resembling certain gliomas, or as diffusely invasive neoplasms resembling exudative cellular inflammatory processes. They had a peculiar predilection for the septum pellucidum but occurred also in the cerebral lobes, basal ganglia, brain stem and cerebellum. They all produced a fibrillary stroma of reticulin fibers and they spread along the perivascular spaces, in the cerebrospinal subarachnoid space, or intraventricularly on and beneath the ependymal lining. One type of lymphoma often fused into another - thus a single tumor often consisted of Hodgkin's sarcoma, lymphosarcoma and reticulosarcoma. In an addition series of 57 cases of spinal cord involvement by malignant lymphomas, there were no instances of a primary tumor; all patients had either primary lymphomas of the brain with secondary spread to the spinal subarchnoid space, or had spinal cord compression as a result of tumor in the vertebrae, the spinal epidural space, or the spinal dura. Hence the spinal cord involvement was a secondary manifestation of a lymphoma elsewhere. Peripheral nerve involvement by lymphomas resulted in destruction of myelin sheaths and axons by tumor cell infiltration and the neuropathy was always part of a generalized lymphomatosis.

Isozymic forms of some energy metabolism enzymes during oncovirus-induced cell transformation.

Kinetic studies of changes in isozymic forms of hexokinase, lactate and malate dehydrogenase and in total hexokinase activity during viral carcinogenesis were carried out. The test systems were rat embryo fibroblasts infected with an oncogenic variant of human adenovirus type 12 and an infectious adenovirus type 6, intact REF cultures in different stages of growth (log and stationary phase), and hamster sarcoma A12 and rat reticulosarcoma 321-RRS cell cultures. Molecular isozymic forms of the stated enzymes and total hexokinase activity in the nuclear fraction and cytoplasm of cells in culture were investigated. It was shown that infectious and oncogenic viruses evoked a rearrangement in the spectrum of the energy metabolism enzymes in the nucleus and cytoplasm. The changes appeared in the first days of the contact of REF culture with the virus, and were more pronounced after the oncogenic rather than the infectious virus. The analysis of changes in isozymic forms of the enzymes under study in virus A12-infected REF cultures and in hamster sarcoma A12 and reticulosarcoma 321-RRS cells growing in vitro revealed that they had some features in common. The most pronounced changes were found with hexokinases. The changes described can serve as objective signs of cell transformation.

[Surgical treatment of tumors of the ribs and clavicles].

The authors report 32 patients with different lesions of ribs and 6 patients with clavicular lesions. Due attention is given to the difficulties in establishing the differential roentgenological diagnosis between reticulosarcoma. Ewing's sarcoma, fibrosarcoma, metastases of other tumors in the rib and fibrous dysplasia. Great diagnostic value of trephine biopsy in establishing the morphological diagnosis is emphasized. To close large defects in the thoracic wall following the resection of some ribs a new variant of autodermal thoracoplasty is suggested.

[Prognostic value of various factors in the treatment of patients with primary malignant tumors of the pelvic bones].

The time of life of 219 patients with primary malignant tumors of bones of the pelvis were analyzed in order to study the influence of different factors on the survival rate of the patients. It was shown that a considerable improvement of some results in the treatment of chondrosarcomas and chordomas was achieved after ablative removal of tumors, in reticulosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma--after a combined chemo-radial treatment with prophylactic courses of the therapy during 2 years. The combination of operation and radiotherapy for the treatment of chordomas gave a reliably higher survival of the patients within 5 years of observation. Prognosis in osteogenic sarcoma and angiosarcoma are extremely unfavorable regardless of the method of treatment.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the soft tissues.

The authors report a case of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the soft tissues. They review the characteristics of this neoplasm, with particular reference to the differential diagnosis with chondrosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, haemangiopericytoma and reticulosarcoma.

Histopathology of tumorous ribs: a review of 130 cases.

There were studied histopathologically 130 tumorous ribs out of 167 tumoral processes of the thoracal wall (77 per cent) and representing about 2 per cent of all the neoplasms studied between 1949 and 1984. There were distinguished 50 malignant primary tumors (Ewing's sarcomas, Parker-Jackson's reticulosarcomas, endotheliosarcomas, low differentiated myelosarcomas and myelomas, osteogenic sarcomas, chondro- and osteochondrosarcomas, and fibrosarcomas), 45 secondary (metastatic) malignant tumors of ribs out of which 32 (75 per cent) originated from lung cancers, and 35 benign lesions (osteoclastomas, chondromas and osteochondromas, fibromas and osteofibromas, eosinocytic histiocytomas, and various osteodystrophies). Morphological differentiating criteria were discussed for each group. There were analysed, when possible, the ways of rib involvement by neighbouring processes, especially the periosteum relationships with the soft tissues of the thoracal wall and with vessels and pleura. Some histogenetic problems were also emphasized.
