The consequences of demographic aging in developed societies are examined. The author notes that "demographic aging has intensified over the last decades, bringing with it a significant modification in relationships between age groups and the sexes.... These changes in demographic structures bring with them the reorganization in intergenerational relations, the most spectacular instance of which...[is] the coexistence at the same time and in the same place of four or five generations of direct descendants." The author develops the hypothesis that a new attitude toward old age is needed in which "the social status of the elderly must be reinstated, and everything must be brought into play to encourage the integration of different age groups and intergenerational solidarity, so as to arrive in the best possible conditions at what [can be termed] the 'era of old age'...which will accompany the coming of the post-industrial society with its orientation toward the mass production of leisure and of services." "At the beginning of the seventies, important economic investments aimed at developing and commercializing the newly discovered oilwells were made in the state of Tabasco [Mexico]. As a result of this, the distribution and the social growth of the population in this state changed. This paper analyses the general characteristics of these changes, particularly those related to migration.... Generally speaking, the most important migratory movements which took place in this state during the oil boom were from one municipality to another and not from other states to Tabasco, as was thought at first.... This paper also describes the direction of the migratory flows and provides information about the sex of the migrants and about their insertion within the sphere of employment." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Changes in the age distribution of the population of Romania are analyzed. "To this end, the mean, median and quartile age were analysed in terms of the dynamics of these usual average values under the effect of the changes in the age-distribution of the Romanian population over the last decades, marked by an accelerated process of demographic aging. The official demographic data available for the years 1930, 1956, 1966, 1977, 1988 and the projections by the year 2000 were used. As shown, the indices of the central tendency of the age-distribution of the Romanian population acquire increasing values, their ascending dynamics being in accordance with the phenomenon of the demographic aging on the whole, by sex and social milieu." Characteristics of the Italian-born population of Western Australia are examined in light of the state's large size and relative isolation. "After a brief review of the gold rush of the 1890s and the agricultural settlement that followed, the paper examines the evolution in the age composition of the population, the extraordinary rapid turnover of migrants, the predominance of young males among them. Brief comparisons are made with other migrant groups in 1986. The importance of education for the attainment of a good income is examined....[The author finds that] mixed marriages (some inevitable because of the much greater number of males among the Italian-born) enrich both sides culturally but speed up the assimilation process." "The functions of migration are reviewed from the viewpoint of the demographic situation in the USSR (by regions, sex, age, education, profession, labour and social activity, nationality, rural-urban, etc.). Some effects of migration on fertility are shown. The authors investigate the role of the economic functions of migration for the process of professional mobility. The territorial mobility of the population is analysed on a wider scale as a part of the social mobility in the socialist society. In connection with this, some problems of the migration policy as an element of the demographic policy of the USSR are outlined." (summary in ENG, RUS)
Meiotic recombination appears to be mediated by recombination nodules, small electron dense spheres, associated with the central region of the synaptonemal complex. These structures are a prerequisite for, not the result of crossing over and they undergo complex structural, numerical and distributional changes before the final distribution of crossovers is achieved. In the organisms studied the nodules are placed randomly along and among the bivalents at zygotene. Subsequently, the distribution is modified to insure that each bivalent and generally each bivalent arm attain a nodule and that close spacing of nodules is minimized. Analysis of the number and location of recombination nodules at pachytene provides knowledge of the number and physical distribution of crossovers in the individual bivalents. Chiasmata originate from recombination nodules. At early diplotene the chiasma consists of a retained segment of synaptonemal complex containing a derivative of a recombination nodule. At late meiotic prophase the segment is eliminated after the formation of a chromatin chiasma.
