Side-effects of prosthetic materials on the human body.

The authors report 6 patients (7 joints) in whom inflammation, dermal necrosis, dermatitis or fistula formation was attributed to the materials commonly used for joint endoprostheses. Histological appearances and chemical analyses of the involved tissues are presented, together with a discussion of the possible mechanism and methods of diagnosis and treatment.

A new rapid method for quantification of PCBs in transformer oil.

In order to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the PCB analysis, the DMSO partition and SPE extraction were applied to clean up the PCB-contaminated transformer oils and PCB level was determined by means of the quadrupole GC/MS. The analysis data obtained from this method were compared statistically to that from the standard method.

Dermatological applications of skin potential level measurements.

Decreasing of the negativity of skin potential level (SPL) on the palmar surface of healthy subjects associated with the process of falling asleep, with a return to increased negativity on awakening, was reported by Nishimura and Nagumo (Ergonomics 1985;28(6):905-913). To clarify the dermatological significance of SPL measurements, the SPL of normal skin at various paired sites in the right upper limb, right lower limb and trunk in healthy volunteers and also at the sites of lesions in patients with psoriasis, herpes zoster and nummular eczema were measured. Fitting curves for the decreasing showed exponential characteristics on the palm and the heel where many sweat glands are involved. SPL differences on other sites did not show the exponential decreasing, but kept almost constant values. The values are negative on normal skin, but positive on lesions sites. We also studied the effects of water content in the horny layer on SPL differences and the biorhythmical changes of SPL differences. We discussed the reasons why these results were obtained. The present study provides the promise of an objective, noninvasive and easy method of testing dermatological conditions.

Determination of biological peptide leukotrienes C4 and D4 by fluorometric detection combined with high-performance liquid chromatography.

A fluorometric procedure combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been developed to separate and quantitate peptide-leukotrienes (p-LTs) C4 and D4. The method is based on pre-column dansylation of the amino terminus of the p-LTs. Its application for the determination of the amounts of p-LTs C4 and D4 in human blood and sputum is also described. The lower limit of detection of p-LTs with this method is 1 pmol.

[EEG analysis of high-dose fentanyl anesthesia--a comparison of rapid sequence anesthesia and the conventional method].

Twenty-one patients who underwent cardiac surgery were assigned to receive high-dose fentanyl rapid sequence anesthesia or conventional high-dose fentanyl anesthesia. In conventional method group, power of delta wave decreased with respect to time. But in rapid sequence group, no decrease was seen until the end of operation. Good maintenance of delta wave in rapid sequence group may be achieved by higher plasma fentanyl concentration and the absence of acute tolerance. In conclusion, high-dose fentanyl rapid sequence anesthesia is a useful method for cardiac surgery.

[Study on the evaluation of recurrence of HCC and the effect after transcatheter hepatic arterial embolization--fluctuations in AFP values].

To determine the usefulness of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in determining recurrence of HCC after interventional angiography (IVA) and to define the relation between AFP and the imaging diagnosis of HCC recurrence, changes in AFP values in 160 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who were treated by IVA > or = two times were classified into four patterns: A: the AFP value was decreased after the first IVA, increased at recurrence and decreased again after the second IVA; B: the AFP value was unchanged after the first IVA, but increased at recurrence and decreased after the second IVA; C: the AFP value was decreased after the first IVA, but was not increased at recurrence; D: the AFP value showed no change. The frequency of each AFP pattern and the diagnosis of recurrence by AFP were determined. The relation between tumor type and AFP was defined. Pattern A was the most frequently detected. In 62.6%, AFP was increased at recurrence (A and B), and there was a positive correlation between changes in the AFP value and the findings of imaging diagnosis. In another 37.5%, AFP was not increased at recurrence (C and D), and therefore, the diagnosis of HCC recurrence by imaging methods was very important.

A new rapid method of glycolate test by diethyl ether extraction, which is applicable to a small amount of bacterial cells of less than one milligram.

The glycolate test is a method to discriminate N-acyl groups of muramyl residue in peptidoglycan of bacterial cell walls by color reaction without purification of the cell walls. The glycolyl residue presents red purple color by heating with 0.02% 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene (DON) dissolved in concentrated H(2)SO(4). Instead of the previous column methods for quantitative analysis, a qualitative method by solvent works was developed to simplify and to miniaturize the analysis. In this method, solvents played two roles, removal of interfering materials and extraction of glycolic acid from the cell hydrolysates. Of several solvent systems tested, diethyl ether was studied in detail on such properties as the efficiency of glycolic acid extraction under several conditions, the ability of removing various interfering compounds, and the advantage on evaporation procedure of the solvent from extracts. DON reaction of the second diethyl ether extract from cell hydrolysate of "Micromonospora nigra" JCM 3328 showed a clear red purple color of a strong absorbance at 530 nm, which is the same as that of authentic glycolic acid. The solvent method was applied to 20 strains of typical actinomycete species whose acyl types have already been known (Uchida and Seino, 1997). All glycolate test positive strains showed the clear red purple color mentioned above, whereas acetyl type strains revealed no apparent color by the same procedures. Additional experiments indicated that the glycolate test could be determined with less than 1 mg of actinomycete cells by using a smaller amount of DON reagent and ordinary polypropylene tubes. The new method was discussed for advantages in the identification of actinomycetes and for possible applications to other fields.

Rectal immunization with antigen-containing microspheres induces stronger Th2 responses than oral immunization: a new method for vaccination.

The rectum as an effective site for induction of systemic and local immunity has received little attention. Rectal immunization with microspheres-containing ovalbumin (MS-OVA) was tested for its ability to elicit systemic and mucosal immune responses. Rectal immunization with MS-OVA enhanced both Th2 dominant OVA-specific IgG levels in the serum and OVA-specific IgA levels in fecal extracts more prominently than did oral immunization. Cytokine analysis of CD4(+) T cells indicated a predominant induction of Th2-type responses compared to Th1-type responses following rectal immunization compared to oral immunization. These results demonstrate that rectal immunization with microspheres could be an effective new vaccination method.

An experimental study of a new sutureless intraluminal graft with an elastic ring that can attach itself to the vessel wall. A preliminary report.

A new sutureless intraluminal graft was developed with an elastic ring made of a flat spring. The diameter of the ring could be reversibly reduced by compression. The sutureless intraluminal graft with an elastic ring can attach itself to the vessel wall by elastic expansion of the ring. The elastic-ring graft was implanted in the descending thoracic aortas of nine dogs and was evaluated histologically and angiographically at different intervals from 18 to 150 days. No complication such as detachment of the ring, aortic rupture, stenosis, or aneurysmal dilatation was observed. With the new graft neither ligation nor posterior aortic wall dissection is necessary, and no anastomotic stenosis occurs. This graft is applicable even if the diameter of the aorta is small. Therefore the elastic-ring sutureless intraluminal graft promises theoretic advantages over sutureless methods that use tape ligation.
