Different analgesic effects of manual and electrical acupuncture stimulation of real and sham auricular points: a blind controlled study with rats.

Stimulation of the auricle is considered to be an effective analgesic technique. The aim of the present study is to establish whether there is a correspondence between somatic inflammation and the appearance of lower resistance points, and moreover, whether the stimulation of such points has an analgesic effect. The study has been conducted on 57 male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing between 120-140 g; 7 of them have been used to determine whether inflammation in the paw leads to the formation of lower resistance points on the auricle. The 50 remaining animals have been divided into 5 groups: Group 1 [12 animals], control were subjected to all manipulations with the exception of the auricle stimulation; Group 2 [12] was stimulated with manual acupuncture in the area corresponding to that observed in the above-mentioned first group of 7 animals; Group 3 [12] was stimulated with 5 Hz and 5 mA; electroacupuncture (EAP) Group 4 [8] and group 5 [6] were treated with acupuncture and with EAP respectively on points believed to be inactive in areas diametrically opposite to the ones observed in the first group. After acupuncture, 100 microg capsaicin in 50 microL of physiological solution were injected subcutis in the dorsal surface of the paw. Edema response was monitored for two hours, with measurement taken every 5 minutes. The results show a reduction in the edema response, only in the group treated with EAP on the appropriate points compared to the control group; no variation was observed in the sham groups. To conclude, the hypothesis of a somatotopic division would seem to be probable, and it would seem that the stimulation of the appropriate areas and the use of an appropriate intensity constitute the two main variables influencing the result.

Immunogenicity and efficacy trials in Aotus nancymai monkeys with model compounds representing parts of a 75-kD merozoite surface antigen of Plasmodium falciparum.

We tested the ability of a recombinant DNA-encoded fragment (C7Ag) of a Plasmodium falciparum merozoite protein (p75) and of two carrier-free peptide models (28-mer and 76-mer) to stimulate boostable antibody responses in Aotus nancymai monkeys. In addition, we evaluated protection against challenge with the Uganda Palo Alto (FUP) strain of this parasite. The data indicate that C7Ag elicited a strong and boostable IgG antibody response in all the monkeys immunized. However, studies with the peptide models demonstrated that various animals produce antibodies to different portions of this structure. When the post-boost sera from monkeys immunized with C7Ag were analyzed for reactivity against two major portions of C7Ag, most of the antibody response was observed against the disulfide-bonded 76-residue region that forms a conformational immunogenic epitope. In the same sera, antibody levels against the charged helical region modeled with a 28-mer were generally low. Immunization with synthetic peptides revealed that the 76-mer stimulated an antibody response almost as strong as C7Ag, with substantial cross-reactivity against the parasite antigen. The 28-mer evoked a response that was not efficient or uniform, and showed little reactivity with the authentic parasite antigen. Aotus nancymai was shown to be susceptible to infection with the Uganda Palo Alto strain of P. falciparum; however, maximum parasitemia varied markedly in both immunized and control monkeys. Statistical analysis failed to recognize differences in maximum parasitemia between the vaccine and control groups. The variation in maximum parasitemia suggests that the FUP strain in this species of Aotus is a poor model for the detection of differences in efficacy based on maximum parasitemia. This initial study with structures based on parts of the 75-kD merozoite surface antigen of P. falciparum indicated that both the recombinant-produced protein C7 and the 76-mer synthetic peptide, when combined with a Syntex adjuvant formulation, were safe and immunogenic in A. nancymai monkeys. However, the data emphasize the problems of using animal models to evaluate the potential effects of immunogens in humans.

[Role of duplex scanning in the diagnosis of erectile dysfunction].

A total of 110 patients aged 34-74 years who complained of erectile dysfunction (ED) were examined. A control group of 9 patients without complaints of ED was formed to determine the normal condition. Baseline ultrasonography was followed by scanning after intracavernous administration of a vasoactive drug to whose use 59 individuals contended to. In the control group, the variation of PSV values was in the range of 23-59 cm/sec. Among the patients with complaints of ED, the baseline study has indicated normal PSV values in both cavernous arteries in 21 cases of the 110 patients; in the other patients, the baseline cavernous arterial blood flow, such as that in the great arteries, was less than 30 cm/sec. Summing up the data of observations of 59 patients undergone erectile stimulation has ascertained that that 20, 34, and 4 patients were diagnosed as having the isolated arterial form of ED, the arteriovenous form, and venous form, respectively; there was no evidence for the form of vascular genesis in 1 patient. Ultrasonography, including color duplex scanning with Doppler energy flow mapping, and B-mode before and after erectile stimulation with intracavernous administration of an E1-prostaglandin drug, makes it possible to assess the contribution of the vascular component to the pathogenesis of erectile dysfunction.

[Population-genetical study of differential fertility in humans (based on an example of habitual abortion). I. Approach to the problem and analysis of morpho-physiological and demographic traits].

It was shown that women from the studied group of married couples, suffering from repeated spontaneous abortions (the main group), have earlier menarche and their husbands are taller, as compared with the control group of couples with normal reproductive performance. The degree of similarity between mates in age and stature appeared to be lower in the main group than in the control group. The variation of the characters under study is supposed to provide an auxiliary criterion in selecting couples at high risk of repeated spontaneous abortions.

[Plasma levels of HCS and beta SP1 in normal and pathological pregnancies].

A study was carried out on 599 pregnant women from whom 2,991 levels were estimated of HCS and beta SP1 to determine their variations. The control group was of 400 normal pregnancies (1,770 couples of levels of HCS and beta SP1. The pathological population was in two groups: - non-complicated pathological pregnancies, from whom 510 coupled levels were estimated in 77 women, and - complicated pregnancies, from whom 711 coupled levels were estimated in 122 patients. This pathological group was compared with the control population statistically. The results conform to those that have already been published. This work shows two original features: - very high levels of beta SP1 and HCS ;are an index of the severity of the prognosis of fetuses and hydramnios, - a drop in the level of beta SP1 towards the end of pregnancies is a warning that fetal distress may occur in labour.

Ethylene glycol monopropyl ether: a developmental toxicity study in rabbits.

To determine the potential developmental toxicity of ethylene glycol monopropyl ether (EGPE), groups of pregnant New Zealand white rabbits were exposed to target concentrations of 0, 125, 250, or 500 ppm EGPE vapors for 6 hr a day on Days 6-18 of gestation. Maternal effects included a slight reduction in feed consumption during the first week of treatment at the 250- and 500-ppm exposure levels and slightly reduced body weight gain at the 500-ppm level compared to those of the controls, but the differences were not statistically significant. One doe exposed to 500 ppm had red-colored urine during the 24-hr period following the second exposure. Hematologic determinations, absolute and relative organ weights, and observations at necropsy revealed no treatment-related maternal effects. Reproductive indices, i.e., pregnancy rate, number of corpora lutea, implantation sites, viable fetuses, early and late resorptions, fetal body weights, fetal sex ratio, and the gravid uterine and corrected body weights, were not affected by exposures to EGPE. The occurrences of external and internal soft tissue malformations and variations and the incidences of skeletal malformations in the EGPE-exposed groups were not significantly different from those in the control group. Common skeletal variations, in many instances, were seen less frequently in EGPE-exposed fetuses than in control fetuses. In those cases where the incidence of fetuses with a skeletal variation was greater for EGPE-exposed fetuses than that for control fetuses, the number of litters involved was not significantly different from that of the control group. Thus, EGPE vapor concentrations as high as 500 ppm did not produce teratogenicity or other developmental toxicity in the rabbit conceptus.

Decreased nocturnal melatonin levels during acute myocardial infarction.

Acute myocardial infarction is accompanied by an increase in cellular oxidative stress in the pericardial coverings of the heart. Melatonin is a highly potent and efficient radical scavenger. Little research has been carried out concerning the relationship between this antioxidant and acute myocardial infarction in humans. In this work, serum levels of melatonin and parameters of oxidative stress, such as glutathione peroxidase and lipid peroxidation levels were examined in light/dark periods in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Twenty-five patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction were studied and 25 patients with no evidence of coronary artery disease served as controls. Venous blood samples were obtained from the patients and control subjects to determine melatonin, glutathione peroxidase and lipid peroxidation; the samples were collected at 10:00 hr (light period) and 03:00 hr (dark period) in the first 24 hr after admission to the coronary care unit. Our results demonstrate the existence of differences between changes in melatonin levels in control subjects and acute myocardial infarction patients, revealing a reduced nocturnal elevation in the acute myocardial infarction group. Glutathione peroxidase levels were lower after acute myocardial infarction and did not show diurnal variations. In the control group, lipid peroxidation levels presented a light/dark pattern but in the acute myocardial infarction group diurnal variations of this parameter were lost. Our data show that acute myocardial infarction is associated with a nocturnal serum melatonin deficit as well as increased oxidative stress, suggesting that melatonin is, at least in part, depleted during the dark phase to reduce the free radicals formed in acute myocardial infarction.

Simultaneous confidence intervals for ratios with applications to the comparison of several treatments with a control.

OBJECTIVES: In this article, we illustrate and compare exact simultaneous confidence sets with various approximate simultaneous confidence intervals for multiple ratios as applied to many-to-one comparisons. Quite different datasets are analyzed to clarify the points. METHODS: The methods are based on existing probability inequalities (e.g., Bonferroni, Slepian and Sidak), estimation of nuisance parameters and re-sampling techniques. Exact simultaneous confidence sets based on the multivariate t-distribution are constructed and compared with approximate simultaneous confidence intervals. RESULTS: It is found that the coverage probabilities associated with the various methods of constructing simultaneous confidence intervals (for ratios) in manyto-one comparisons depend on the ratios of the coefficient of variation for the mean of the control group to the coefficient of variation for the mean of the treatments. If the ratios of the coefficients of variations are less than one, the Bonferroni corrected Fieller confidence intervals have almost the same coverage probability as the exact simultaneous confidence sets. Otherwise, the use of Bonferroni intervals leads to conservative results. CONCLUSIONS: When the ratio of the coefficient of variation for the mean of the control group to the coefficient of variation for the mean of the treatments are greater than one (e.g., in balanced designs with increasing effects), the Bonferroni simultaneous confidence intervals are too conservative. Therefore, we recommend not using Bonferroni for this kind of data. On the other hand, the plug-in method maintains the intended confidence coefficient quite satisfactorily; therefore, it can serve as the best alternative in any case.

Ascorbate concentration in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum. Intrathecal accumulation and CSF flow rate.

Concentrations of ascorbate (vitamin C) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from human controls (median 163 mumol/l, n = 63) were found to be in the same range as CSF samples from patients (n = 56) with various neurological diseases, but excluding those with blood-CSF barrier dysfunction. The CSF/serum concentration ratio in the former group is non-linear, decreasing with increasing serum concentration. Surprisingly, ascorbate concentration in blood (median 41 mumol/l, n = 119) was decreased significantly in cases of neurological diseases with a blood-CSF barrier dysfunction (median 26 mumol/l, n = 30). In this latter group a linear CSF to serum ratio with a mean of 5.7:1 (with CSF/serum albumin quotients QAlb = 7.8-70.8 x 10(-3), median 10.0 x 10(-3)) was observed, approaching a value > 12.5:1 in the case of complete stop of CSF flow. Serum ascorbate concentrations decreased with decreasing CSF flow rate (1 square root of QAlb), indicating a CSF flow-dependent constant contribution from high intrathecal ascorbate concentration to the varying diet-dependent concentrations in blood. In the control group the biological coefficient of variation for CSF ascorbate concentrations (C.V. = 21.1%) was smaller than for serum concentrations (C.V. = 42.6%), confirming an efficient ascorbate homeostasis in human brain. This was different from uric acid which was used as a reference molecule with an inversed gradient in the same group of control patients. Similar variations in CSF(y) and serum(x) for urate concentrations are observed due to the strong correlation y = 0.1x +/- 10 mumol/l, including 99% of the cases with an urate serum concentration range from 80 mumol/l to 460 mumol/l.

Monitoring therapy with vitamin K antagonists in patients with lupus anticoagulant: effect on different tests for INR determination.

BACKGROUND: Lupus anticoagulant (antiphospholipid antibodies) is associated with venous and arterial thrombosis in patients with and without autoimmune disorders. Vitamin K antagonists are the treatment of choice in patients with thrombosis, of which the dose is titrated by INR monitoring. Several recent reports suggest that the presence of the lupus anticoagulant disturbs the INR test and may lead to unreliable results with a large variation in INR values, dependent on the reagents used. METHODS: We studied 11 lupus anticoagulant positive patients and 11 lupus anticoagulant negative patients, all using vitamin K antagonists. The INR value was determined using seven different tests and the variation in INR values was compared between the two groups. The amidolytic Factor X levels were used as an phospholipid independent measure for intensity of warfarin therapy. Factor VII and X activity were measured to assess the stability of warfarin therapy. RESULTS: The variation of the results with different INR tests within one patient was minimal and comparable in the two groups for INR's in the therapeutic range. The coefficient of variation for the cases and control group was 10.43 and 9.35, respectively. Variation in both groups increased at supratherapeutic levels of anticoagulation and when the anticoagulation was unstable (measured with Factor X/Factor VII ratio). The relationship between INR values and Factor X analysis revealed no influence of the lupus anticoagulant. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, lupus anticoagulant antibodies do not disturb INR laboratory tests. Differences in INR measurements are seen in patients with a high intensity of anticoagulation and in patients who either just started or in whom no stable anticoagulation has been achieved. Abbreviated Abstract. This study investigates the influence of lupus anticoagulant on INR determination tests in patients treated with warfarin. Eleven cases and eleven lupus anticoagulant negative control patients, also on warfarin therapy, were included. Seven INR results per patient were obtained using different laboratory tests. A factor X assay was performed to obtain an independent measure for the intensity of warfarin therapy. The variation of INR results between the cases and controls revealed no difference in these groups. In addition, the relationship between INR values and Factor X analysis indicated no influence of the lupus anticoagulant. What was observed was an increased difference in INR values in patients with a high intensity of anticoagulation and in patients who either just started or in whom no stable anticoagulation has been achieved

[Scintigraphic study of gallbladder emptying in chronic Chagas' disease].

Previous studies on gallbladder motility in Chagas' disease, which is known to be associated with diffuse destruction of intramural neurons, have produced conflicting results. In the present study we reevaluated this question by submitting chronic chagasic patients (n = 18) and controls (n = 12) to a cholescintigraphic study of gallbladder emptying in response to a single intra-venous injection of 60 ng/kg cerulein 90 min after administration of 99mTC-HIDA. Five min. before and immediately before carulein injection, as well as every 5 min. up to 45 min. after the stimulus, images of the gallbladder were obtained with a gamma-camera coupled to a computer. The counts obtained for regions of interest corresponding to the gallbladder, permitted the calculation of the ejection fraction of the organ and the construction of individual gallbladder emptying curves. The ejection fractions values for the total sample of chagasic patients (median 67.8%; variation, 4.0 to 99.0%), although higher than those for the control group (median: 34.2% variation, 13.1 to 88.0%), were not statistically significant (p greater than 0.05). However, analysis of the individual curves for the chagasics permitted identifying 2 subgroups, one of which (n = 9) showed values very similar to those for the controls, whereas the other (n = 9) showed a very rapid and intense gallbladder emptying. It is concluded that impairment of the gallbladder innervation in Chagas' disease may lead to heterogeneous patterns of gallbladder emptying, with some patients being definitely hypersensitive to an exogenous cholecystokinetic agent.

Effect of calcitonin or the anabolic steroid Decadurabolin on serum beta 2 microglobulin in osteoporotic postmenopausal women.

beta 2-Microglobulin (beta 2m) is a small polypeptide of 99 amino acids with a molecular weight of 11.800. It is found in serum, on the surface of almost all mammalian cells and is part of the surface antigen of the cell membrane of human lymphocytes. Moreover, the heavy chain of major histocompatibility complex class I molecules normally associates in the membrane with beta 2m. According to Canalis, et al this polypeptide is a bone derived growth factor. In our study, serum beta 2m, osteocalcin bone Gla-protein (BGP) and calcium phosphorous metabolism were evaluated in a group of 18 osteoporotic women. Nine were treated with an anabolic steroid, DecaDurabolin and 9 with salmon calcitonin (sCT) for 3 months. The same variables were evaluated in a control group (6 osteoporotic women) treated with oral Ca (1,500 mg/day for 3 months). A significant increase in serum beta 2m and BGP (p < 0.001) was observed after anabolic steroid while a significant decrease in serum beta 2m and BGP (p < 0.01) was observed after sCT. No significant variation for serum beta 2m and BGP was observed in the control group. No significant variation of calcium-phosphorous metabolism was observed in either the control group or the treated group. BGP variations suggest that anabolic steroid stimulates bone formation while a decrease in BGP observed after sCT suggests that this hormone depresses bone turnover via a block in osteoclast activity. Moreover it could be suggested that anabolic steroid and sCT affect beta 2m producing cells.

The effect of carbamazepine on cerebral glucose metabolism.

We used positron emission tomography with 18F-2-deoxy-D-glucose to study the effect of carbamazepine on local cerebral metabolic rate for glucose (lCMRGlc) in 9 patients with complex partial seizures. Twenty regions of interest were evaluated. Seven control patients had serial scans without a drug change. Metabolic rates were significantly (p less than 0.05) lower in patients on carbamazepine in 6 of 20 regions of interest (3 left cerebral hemisphere, 3 right). Mean lCMRGlc was 7.4 +/- 2.0 mg/min/100 in patients on carbamazepine and 8.8 +/- 2.5 in patients off carbamazepine (p less than 0.00005; cutoff level for 180 comparisons: 0.00027). The mean (+/- SEM) difference in lCMRGlc between scans was 12 +/- 2%. No significant changes in lCMRGlc on serial scans were detected in any of the 20 regions for the control group. The mean (+/- SEM) variation for control regions of interest was 1 +/- 1%. This study showed that carbamazepine depresses cerebral glucose metabolism as much as phenytoin does, but much less than phenobarbital does. The difference in effect on lCMRGlc may be related to drug mechanisms of action, as well as to effects on memory, learning, mood, and behavior.

Impaired acquisition of temporal differentiation performance following lesions of the ascending 5-hydroxytryptaminergic pathways.

Nineteen rats received injections of 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine into the dorsal and median raphe nuclei; 16 rats received sham injections. The rats underwent 50 daily training sessions under an interresponse-time-greater-than-15-seconds (IRT greater than 15 s) schedule of sucrose reinforcement. The lesioned group showed impaired acquisition of temporal differentiation, in that their response rates remained significantly higher and their obtained reinforcement frequencies significantly lower than those of the control (sham-lesioned) group. Comparison of the IRT frequency distributions obtained from the two groups during the last 5 days of training showed that the lesioned group produced a significantly higher proportion of very short IRTs (less than 3 s) than the control group; when these short IRTs were disregarded, the lesioned group displayed a significantly lower mean IRT and a significantly higher coefficient of variation than the control group. The levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in the parietal cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, nucleus accumbens and hypothalamus were markedly reduced in the lesioned group, but the levels of noradrenaline and dopamine were not significantly affected by the lesion. The results suggest that destruction of the ascending 5HTergic pathways may reduce animals' capacity to inhibit positively reinforced operant behaviour, and may impair temporal discrimination.

Evaluation of the local effects of vitamin E (E-Mousse) on free radicals in diabetic microangiopathy: a randomized, controlled trial.

The aims of the study were to evaluate the short-term effects of a new thermosensitive, vitamin E (V-E) mousse on local free radicals (FR) and skin flux in diabetic microangiopathy. A group of 40 patients with diabetic microangiopathy was included. The variation in measurements of skin FR was evaluated by the D-Rom test. Subjects were between 45 and 65 years with type II diabetes and good metabolic control. E-mousse, a thermoactive preparation of acetate vitamin E (20%), was applied twice daily on the whole surface of the leg (below knee) and foot for 3 weeks. The contralateral leg was untreated acting as control. Subjects with age between 45 and 65 years with type II diabetes (diagnosed at least 5 years before) and good metabolic control (blood sugar < 180 mg/dL) were included after informed consent. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and severe lower limbs infections were excluded. Local free radicals (FR) and laser Doppler flux including the venoarteriolar response (VAR) were evaluated. The tolerability was evaluated by a semiquantitative score. Of the 40 included patients 34 completed the study. The 2 groups were comparable. At 3 weeks there was no decrease in FR in controls; the decrease in the treatment group was 45.3% (p < 0.05). Also in the treatment group RF decreased (p < 0.05) and the VARveno improved from an average of 21% to an average of 38% (p < 0.05). No significant variations were observed in the control group. The variation in symptomatic score was from a total value of 8 to 5 in the control group and from 8 to 1 in the treatment group (p < 0.02). Their tolerability was good. In conclusion local treatment with E-mousse for 3 weeks in diabetic microangiopathy improves skin microcirculation and the metabolic condition as shown by the decrease in FR.

Ambulatory blood pressure in type I diabetes mellitus. Comparison to presence of incipient nephropathy in adolescents and young adults.

AMBP measurements were obtained at 20-min intervals during the day and at 60-min intervals during the night in 38 adolescents and young adults (12-25 yr old) with type I diabetes, and in 36 healthy, nondiabetic control subjects of comparable age. The group of patients with elevated AER (greater than 15 micrograms/min) had higher mean 24-h sBP, dBP, and BPB (defined as the prevalence of systolic readings greater than 130 mm Hg or diastolic readings greater than 85 mm Hg) compared with both the group of patients with type I diabetes and AER less than 15, and the control group. The normal diurnal variation in BP and BPB was observed in the control group and the group with type I diabetes and AER less than 15, whereas the nocturnal decrease observed in the group with type I diabetes and AER greater than 15 was not statistically significant. Elevations in AMBP of the patient group with AER greater than 15 were reflected in random BP measurements. Even though the mean random BP measurements of all groups were within the normal range for age, the mean random sBP and dBP of the type I diabetes patients with AER greater than 15 was higher than both the control group and the group with type I diabetes and AER less than 15. The GFR, determined by the clearance of 99Tc-DTPA, was associated negatively with measures of AMBP and AER in the group with AER greater than 15.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Cytogenetic monitoring of pesticide sprayers.

The induction of chromosome aberrations, micronuclei, and sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs) was examined in cultured lymphocytes of 27 vineyard growers exposed to pesticides. Cytogenetic examinations were performed during the prespraying period, a month after spraying, and at the end of the spraying season. For comparison purposes, the same cytogenetic monitoring program was applied to two control groups. The first consisted of 15 individuals from a nearby town, and the second consisted of 20 volunteers living 200 km from the vine-growing area (reference control group). A positive, though low statistically significant (P < 0.017) difference in the yield of unstable chromosomal aberrations in exposed sprayers was observed compared with both control groups during the prespraying period. The mean group value of micronuclei in exposed workers averaged 5.41 per 1000 binucleated cells, with individual means ranging from 0 to 15. In both control groups, the yield of micronuclei averaged 5.09 per 1000 binucleated cells, with individual means ranging from 1 to 10. No statistically significant (P < 0.5) differences in yield of micronuclei were found in exposed subjects compared with both control groups. Significant individual variation (F = 14.09, P < 0.000) in SCE frequency was observed in exposed subjects, as well as in both control groups (F = 14.09, P < 0.000). A month after spraying, the average incidence of unstable aberrations in pesticide sprayers was 0.22%, and the yield of micronuclei averaged 17.78 per 1000 binucleated cells, with individual means ranging from 7 to 28. The incidence of micronuclei a month after spraying in exposed subjects was elevated (statistically significant at P < 0.01) in comparison with the prespraying period, while the difference in the yield of chromosomal aberrations in exposed subjects was insignificant (P < 0.5). At the end of the spraying season, the average incidence of unstable aberrations in exposed subjects was 0.79%, and the yield of micronuclei averaged 39.92 micronuclei per 1000 binucleated cells, with individual means ranging from 21 to 62. The appearance of more than one micronucleus per binucleated cell was related to the results on chromosome aberrations. The frequencies of chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei were significantly higher (P < 0.001, P < 0.000) in the exposed group than in their matched control groups. The yield of micronuclei in pesticide sprayers at the end of the season was higher than expected with respect to chromosomal aberration frequency, which provides some evidence that some of the micronuclei are induced by the spindle-inhibiting effects of pesticides. A statistically significant (P < 0.003) difference in micronuclei in the first control group was observed compared with the reference control group at the end of the spraying season. With respect to the incidence of micronuclei in the control group in the vine-growing area, a poor but positive correlation (r = 0.074, P < 0.104) with duration of the spraying season was found, which is probably due to airborne pesticides in the vine-growing area. SCE frequencies of the workers' lymphocytes were not significantly changed due to the exposure. The yield of aberrations as well as that of micronuclei in exposed subjects correlated positively (r = 16, P = 0.016) with duration of exposure.
