Preliminary report of treatment with oral contraceptive pills for intermenstrual vaginal bleeding secondary to a cesarean section scar.

Uterine scar has been reported as a possible cause of intermenstrual bleeding in women with previous cesareans. We evaluated the effectiveness of combined hormonal therapy (estrogen and progesterone tablets containing 0.5 mg of norgestrel and 0.05 mg of ethynyl estradiol) in patients with recurring vaginal bleeding after cesarean section. Several cycles of the hormonal therapy eliminated the problem of abnormal vaginal bleeding, and the patients were satisfied with the treatment.

Histology of the endometrium in long-term use of a sequential oral contraceptive.

Non-atypical adenomatous hyperplasia was found in 13.5% of 111 biopsies obtained from long-term, predominantly black, users of Oracon. An association between length of time of use (95 cycles for those with adenomatous hyperplasia versus 73 for those without) and the development of adenomatous hyperplasia was noted, but there was no association with hypertension or obesity. Cystic glandular dilatation was seen in 63% but was not thought to represent hyperplasia. No more advanced lesions were seen.

Low-dose combination oral contraceptives: a controlled clinical study of three different norgestrel-ethinyl estradiol ratios.

Three doses of norgestrel-ethinyl estradiol in altered ratios were investigated in a double-blind, randomized study. The estrogen content was maintained at 20 microng or less, while the progestogen dose was increased in 100-microng increments. Two pregnancies were reported for the lowest dose. No pregnancies occurred in the two higher doses. Each dosage increase improved cycle control and lessened bleeding irregularities. The incidence of patients reporting intermenstrual bleeding was inversely proportional to the doses studied. Dropouts for cycle disturbances followed a similar pattern.
