Local or nonlocal? A research of strontium isotope ratios of teeth and bones on skeletal remains with artificial deformed skulls.

The analysis of strontium isotopic composition of teeth and bone served as an approach to determine nonlocal individuals with artificially deformed skulls in Teuton and Gepid sites. A differing Sr-isotopic composition between tooth and bone from the same skeleton reveals a residence change between early childhood and the last ten years before death. The results show that most Teuton and Gepid individuals investigated are local habitants.

The Slovenian population data on the PCR based loci HLA-DQA1, LDLR, GYPA, HBGG, D7S8, GC, and D1S80.

Allele frequencies for the loci HLA-DQA1, LDLR, GYPA, HBGG, D7S8, GC, and D1S80 were determined for a sample population of unrelated individuals from Slovenia. All loci meet Hardy-Weinberg expectations, except the loci GYPA (p = 0.041) and D1S80 (p = 0.009). There is little evidence for association of alleles among the seven loci. Only one out of 21 pairwise comparisons demonstrated departures from independence (HLA-DQA1/HBGG, p = 0.008). The allelic frequency data generally are similar to that of U.S. Caucasians.

Allele and genotype frequencies for D1S80 locus in a Brazilian population sample.

Gene and genotype frequencies in relation to the D1S80 locus were determined in a sample of 197 unrelated individuals (144 Caucasians and 53 Mulattoes), living in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The Mulatto group was composed by mixed individuals who presented at least one negroid physical characteristic or declared themselves to be of mixed (Black-White) ancestry. Nineteen different alleles were detected in the Caucasian sample and 15 among Mulattoes. Alleles 18 and 24 were found to be the most common ones in the Caucasian population with frequencies of 0.173 and 0.357 respectively; the sample heterozygote frequency was estimated in 0.824. Alleles 18, 24, and 28 were found to be the most common alleles among Mulattoes with respective frequencies of 0.150, 0.349, and 0.113; the sample heterozygote frequency was 0.759. Fifty-five different genotypes were detected among Brazilian Caucasians whereas the respective figure among Mulattoes was 31. No significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were found in both population samples.

Allele and genotype frequencies for D1S80 and 3'APOB in Recanati, Central Italy.

The VNTR 3'APOB and D1S80 loci were studied in a sample of 179 individuals living in the Recanati Area (Central Italy). For 3'APOB, we found 34 genotypes and 11 alleles. The system was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The observed and expected heterozygosity were 0.788 and 0.798 respectively. The discrimination power was 0.96, the a-priori paternity exclusion power was 0.619 and the polymorphism information content was 0.773. For D1S80, we found 45 genotypes and 18 alleles. The system deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The observed and expected heterozygosity were 0.696 and 0.790 respectively. The discrimination power was 0.96, the a-priori paternity exclusion power was 0.617 and PIC was 0.767. The Recanati sample was compared with the general Italian frequencies for the 3'APOB locus. A difference of borderline significance was detected (P = 0.04). For D1S80, the sample was compared with a sample from Southern Italy and no significant difference was detected.

History of mental health in South Africa. Part XII. Services for criminals, delinquents and psychopaths.

The development in the United States of psychiatric services for delinquents and criminals, which had a considerable influence on mental health services in South Africa, is described. It was followed by the appointment of court psychiatrists in thsi country, mainly to assist the Children's Courts. The findings of the Rumpff Commission on the responsibility of the mentally deranged persons are described, and psychiatric services for children are discussed.

Distribution of HLA-DQA1, polymarker, CSF1PO, vWA, TH01, TPOX, D16S539, D7S820, D13S317, and D5S818 alleles in East Bengali and West Punjabi populations from Indo-Pak Subcontinent.

Blood samples were collected from 115 individuals residing in the Pakistani state of West Punjab and 81 Bengali individuals residing in the state of East Bengal, India. These samples were analyzed for the loci HLA-DQA1, PM (LDLR, GYPA, HBGG, D7S8, and GC) and eight short tandem repeats: CSF1PO, TPOX, THO1, vWA, D16S539, D7S820, D13S317, and D5S818. Departures from Hardy-Weinberg (HWE) were observed in Punjabi population at LDLR, THO1, D13S317, D5S818, and D16S539 and at CSF1PO and THO1 in Bengali population.

Northeast Italy population data using multiplex PCR (HUMCD4, HUMTH01, HUMTPOX, and HUMCSF1P0) loci.

Allele and genotype frequencies for four short tandem repeat (STR) loci (HUMCD4, HUMTH01, HUMTPOX, and HUMCSF1P0) were determined in 100 unrelated individuals from Veneto (Northeast Italy). After a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplification, semi-automatic DNA profiling was performed using an A.L.F.express DNA Sequencer. Conditions were optimized for the PCR co-amplification of these four STR loci and the quadruplex PCR was performed on various forensic DNA samples such as whole blood, blood-stains, teeth, and saliva from Caucasians living in the Northeast Italy. The distribution of the genotype frequencies showed no significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg expectations in the sampled population. The combined Power of Discrimination (PD) of the quadruplex was 0.9999.

Evaluation of a quadruplex short atandem repeat system (HUMVWA31/A, HUMD11S554, HUMAPOAI1, and HUMACTBP2 loci) for forensic identity testing, confident typing of complex alleles, and population databases.

AIM: To evaluate a quadruplex short tandem repeat (STR) system based on the amplification of allelic products from HUMVWA31/A, HUMD11S554, HUMACTBP2, and HUMAPOAI1 loci for routine identity testing in forensic casework, and to provide details for the construction of a "multiplex allelic ladder" for confident typing of complex alleles from the quadruplex STR system and compiling a database for three representative populations living in Northern Norway (Norwegian, Saami, and Russian/Ukrainian). METHODS: The constructed "multiplex allelic ladder" consisted of 44 regularly spaced and uniform alleles, spanning from 135 to 333 bp, and included 9 HUMVWA31/A alleles (TCTA repeat unit), 9 HUMD11S554 alleles (AAAG repeat unit), and 26 HUMACTBP2 alleles (AAAG repeat unit). Confident typing of selected complex alleles from the quadruplex STR system was secured only when they were compared with their matching ladder composed of the same repetitive unit as in our constructed "multiplex allelic ladder". Using different fluorescent dyes, PCR products from the quadruplex STR system were sized with constructed allelic ladder (red labeled) in one lane. RESULTS: Population database was established for unrelated Norwegians (n=141), Saami (n=78), and Russians/Ukrainians (n=138). Combined paternity exclusions were 99.86%, 99.94%, 99.95% and the values of probability of match were 8.0x10-8, 1.4x10-8, and 1.1x10-8, in Saami, Norwegians, and Russians/Ukrainians, respectively. CONCLUSION: We conclude that by applying our constructed allelic ladder a confident typing of alleles from our quadruplex STR system may be ensured. Further, the high efficiency of the selected loci makes this system a reliable tool for use in forensic casework.
