The impact of mass media family planning programmes on current use of contraception in urban Bangladesh.

A sample of 871 currently married urban Bangladeshi women was used to assess the impact of mass media family planning programmes on current contraceptive use. The analyses suggested that radio had been playing a significant role in spreading family planning messages among eligible clients; 38% of women with access to a radio had heard of family planning messages while the figures for TV and newspaper were 18.5% and 8.5% respectively. Education, number of living children and current contraceptive use were important predictors of exposure to any mass media family planning messages. There was a negative relationship between breast-feeding and the current use of contraception indicating a low need for contraception among women who were breast-feeding.

Long-wavelength red light emission from TV and photosensitive siezures.

PURPOSE: We investigated a role of long-wavelength red light emission from TV in the induction of photosensitive seizures by an animated TV program called "Pocket Monsters". METHODS: The luminance energy of recorded color bar was measured by a spectroradiometer in cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) of photosensitive patients with and without seizures on the program (induced patients and photosensitive controls). RESULTS: The mean ratio of long-wavelength red light to total visible range was significantly higher in the CRTs of induced patients than in the CRTs of photosensitive controls. The ratio of luminance energy between at turn-on and at 60 min after turn-on of the CRTs indicated that luminance energy in long-wavelength red range from the CRTs of induced patients increased significantly after turn-on of CRTs. CONCLUSIONS: High amounts of long-wavelength red light emitted from CRTs might play an important role in induction of photosensitive seizures in "Pokemon" incident.

Analysis of environmental pollution by radiofrequency radiation from teleradiocommunication devices.

The environmental radiofrequency radiation pollution, including microwaves, generated by teleradiocommunication devices is particularly great where there exists a concentration of such apparatus. The wide-band field detectors commonly used for environmental protection surveys do not make it possible to discern the contributions of the individual emitters at a given point. It is possible to obtain this result theoretically by using only a personal computer, and by using the characteristics of the emitter and of surrounding territory as inputs. For this purpose, a basic program has been prepared. An analysis of this type, besides being an effective tool for the planning of environmental pollution abatement, provides the necessary information for forecasting field levels produced as a consequence of the installation of new repeaters. This data provides indispensable information for issuing installation licenses by the competent authorities. This article concludes with a comparison between the theoretical results and those detected experimentally in one specific case.

A comparative study of nutrient intakes of migrant and Australian children in Western Australia.

Little is known about the dietary patterns and nutrient intakes of preschool children in Australia. A study was undertaken in Perth on Australian and migrant children to obtain information on preschool diets. It was found that, although the mean nutrient intakes in both groups were adequate, some individual migrant national groups showed deficiencies of one or more nutrients. Many children were obtaining excessive calories and protein. The consumption of "empty calorie" foods was also high. In order to find different ways to teach good principles and practice of nutrition, the types of media which might influence parents were studied. It was considered that television and, to a lesser degree, radio were media which might exert a considerable effect if they were used to the best advantage. These forms of communication particularly were of potential value, as some migrant parents could not read English and some were illiterate. A positive nutrition education programme to combat commerical food advertising of "empty calorie" foods is recommended.

Healthcare communications--the requirement for flexibility.

This paper has attempted to show how the requirements of bedhead services have developed and become much more flexible to match the clients' needs. The outstanding two features that remain most important to the end users are reliability and flexibility. Whatever systems are installed, the end user must be satisfied that the equipment will last 15 years and that the supplier will be around to maintain it, and to add extra features or modify the bedhead services arrangement in line with changing demands and requirements for hospitals.
